• Starlin Castro is an All-Star

Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol, or maybe Aramis Ramirez might have been better picks but I’m happy with this selection. Good for the kid.

The NL roster:

Starters
Brian McCann
Prince Fielder
Rickie Weeks
Jose Reyes
Placido Polanco
Ryan Braun
Lance Berkman
Matt Kemp

Pitchers
Joel Hanrahan
Roy Halladay
Cliff Lee
Cole Hamels
Tim Lincecum

Matt Cain
Brian Wilson‘s Beard
Ryan Vogelsong
Tyler Clippard
Jair Jurrjens
Clayton Kershaw
Heath Bell
Jonny Venters

Reserves

Justin Upton
Chipper Jones
Starlin Castro
Brandon Phillips
Jay Bruce
Joey Votto
Troy Tulowitzki
Gaby Sanchez
Hunter Pence
Carlos Beltran
Matt Holliday
Yadier Molina

The notable snubs are on the AL side in CC Sabathia and Paul Konerko. I would bet they’re both on the fan ballot, but Konerko has no chance against a similarly deserving NYY in online voting.

Final Vote Candidates

AL:

Alex Gordon
Adam Jones
Paul Konerko
Victor Martinez
Ben Zobrist

So maybe not so much on the CC thing

NL:

Andre Ethier
Todd Helton
Ian Kennedy (wut)
Michael Morse
Shane Victorino

He's got a two day head start on you, which is more than he needs. He's got friends in every town and village from here to the Sudan, he speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see him again. With any luck, he's got the grail already.

From last:
I don’t think there’s much precedent for a “super utility” guy, the Infante pick last year was just weird. A lot of players just play wherever, and they’ll be enough bodies where it won’t matter. AL could have been smarter and taken Ben Zobrist though.
I thought they set up that spot just so they can stick a guy anywhere in case someone got injured or didn’t want to play anymore. He’s not so much an “All-Star” as he is just kind of there to plug a hole.

From Miles:

The Cubs have sent pitcher Hayden Simpson, their No. 1 pick from last year, from Class A Peoria back to Mesa. Simpson has had a rough go of it this year, and they felt sending him out every five days to take his lumps in the Midwest League was unfair. So they’ll let him regroup in Mesa. His stuff has been short, and I’m told he looks out of gas as he came into this season weakened from a bad case of mono last fall.

It’s pretty galling that the Cubs are still trying to sell people on this “Simpson is bad because he had mono a year ago” instead of owning up to the fact that they went cheap and drafted a guy who will probably never see a MLB start.
we are talking about 44 injury filled innings for mcnutt. he certainly isn’t doing great right now but im going to take a wait and see approach (dying laughing)
Well, we are talking about less than 200 innings overall, dj. It’s not like he’s been a great pitcher for several hundred innings. He’s been a very good pitcher for about 100 innings. His strikeout percentage right now is horrible. His K-BB% is not even close to as good as the league average pitcher. He’s given up over 11 hits per inning in AA. I’m not saying these 44 innings represent his true talent level. I’m just saying he’s not been anywhere near any good since getting to AA.

That’s all. We can argue about the reasons or excuse them all day long, but the reality is that since he reached AA he’s been less than impressive to say the least. It could be the injury. I hope it is, but it doesn’t change what he’s done so far. We shouldn’t write him off just as we shouldn’t write Josh Vitters off.

We took it down a few days ago when we were trying to figure out if we were having server load issues or software issues. Hence the server move. We’ll probably reactivate all those widgets at some point in the near future.
