I was thinking that Ryan Dempster would probably not be traded, but with as many as 10 teams interested I'm thinking the odds of him being dealt are increasing. I'm also thinking the odds of the Cubs acquiring a better package than he's probably worth is going up as well.
I plan to look at these teams and what the Cubs may be looking to get in return either later tonight or tomorrow morning. I may update this post or create a new one.
So…it could go either way.

Batman: The Animated Series is the closest portrayal of the core of the longest runs of Batman as the World’s Greatest Detective. The Batman comics have been all over the place from campy fun that was nearly identical to the Adam West Batman, to the God Damn Batman and picking up a gun, to Nolan and Bale’s Batninja.
I loved Batman Begins with TDK & Tim Burton’s Batman tied for 2nd. The Nolan movies had the benefit of a long lay off as well as only having to best the last one which was a live action Neon cartoon clusterfudge of a movie with Batnipples. Ledger’s death did add to the overratedness of The Dark Knight, but it is still a solid movie.
I am extremely excited for the last Nolan movie as well as excited about the reboot that is already in the early stages. I hope they go more detective or even move on to Batman Beyond so as to not get the constant comparing to Nolan’s movies as Spider-man is dealing with right now. Justice League movie has no chance of being any good if it happens, so I hope it doesn’t. Animated that works fine, live action no way.
mb – re: your last few posts, do you think you can really measure trade value for a contender just with raw numbers? that is, if you are team X and you are extremely confident that adding garza/dempster will virtually guarantee you a pennant, don’t you think that GM will grossly overpay and just worry about the consequences later? i’m as big a fan as possible w/r/t assigning a numerical value to anything and everything, but i would say that going deep into the playoffs is just one of those things that you can’t really measure. i think this is amplified if a GM is concerned about his job. if you get the pirates to not only finish above .500 but actually make the playoffs, your job will be secure for at least a few years. would you be willing to be sell out your team’s future to do that? i think that you would for sure. especially because the worst case scenario is that the players you traded went on to all become superstars. what are the odds of this? like zero? and even if it happens, in 10 years when they finally achieve at the MLB level, not that many people will remember that you were the guy that gave them up for matt garza. but they’ll remember you as the dude that got their team a ring.

EP, I think if a GM believes that Garza or Dempster will guarantee them a playoff victory then they’re probably all but assured of reaching the playoffs anyway. At that point I see no reason for the team to give up much of anything for the small bump they’ll get. This is why the Yankees have been largely silent at the trade deadline. They’re already in the playoffs and acquiring talent that costs them prospects at the break is kind of pointless. I think the best bet for a team overpaying is a team that’s on the bubble right now and I think any GM of those teams is going to realize that a Dempster or Garza isn’t going to do a whole lot to improve their situation.
To answer your question, yes, I believe on average this method works. However, it’s an average just like the value per win. Some players will be traded for more than they’re worth and some less. I have no idea which ones will fall into which group and I’m not sure anyone does. Teams have become more and more reluctant to give up prospects at the deadline for what it’s worth. They’re just too valuable and adding a win for Garza and Dempster isn’t going to greatly alter any team’s playoff hopes.
If the bosox are worried about getting fleeced by theo, that front office is in serious disarray.

I don’t think Lucchino trusts Cherington enough to let him run the show. It’s kind of like before Theo quit and then came back with assurances he’d run the show and Lucchino wouldn’t be involved.

Apparently the BoSox clubhouse is in disarray and nobody likes Bobby V, so I wonder what Dempster would think of that. Might be a minor issue, or it might be a deal-breaker. Just a thought.

1. They are on the bubble and the trade might get them into the playoffs, where Verlander can have a greater impact.
2. They need pitching and defense (Garza doesn’t offer D, but Barney does)
3. They have an owner who’ll mortgage and a GM that might be old-school (Dombrowski).
4. They are likely to get into the playoffs by virtue of division championship and not wildcard, if they get in, so they don’t need to worry about the one-game playoff. (I don’t think an AL Central runner up will be a wildcard.)
But I don’t think they’ll make a trade with the Cubs that doesn’t include Barney+Pitcher, because he offers serviceable offense and good D and they could use him at SS or 2B.

Here’s the trade. Lilly + Theriot to Dodgers; Blake DeWitt and pitching prospects Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit to Cubs.
Ok, so we traded Theriot for Theriot except that Theriot 2.0 was DFA’d twice and is STILL with us in the minors, and Lilly for Wallach and Smit, neither of whom show up on DJ’s posts. (After a little Google-time, I can report that Smit was cut after last year when he posted something like a 6BB/IP with a 5K/IP line, and Wallach has been on the 7 day DL since May 1 with Daytona.)
Dodgers win the trade now in hindsight, and their gamble of getting a proven vet for some prospects pays off well, as Enrico suggested.

I actually liked the Punisher movie with Thomas Jane. The villain was lame but the punishing was great. The short film was very enjoyable and I hope they are able to make a better sequel than that Warzone movie.
Saw in tonight’s Daytona boxscore that Elliot Soto played SS. I thought that was a little weird considering he’d been kind of floundering for Tennessee all season. Did a search on Arismendy Alcantara and milb.com now shows him on Peoria’s roster. Not sure what’s up with that considering how well he has hit in the FSL, or how the Cubs plan to have have Baez and Alcantara on the same roster. Baez played SS tonight for Peoria. On top of that, the Cubs promoted… Dustin Harrington… from Daytona to Tennessee and he is listed as a SS. He was torching the FSL to the tune of a .503 OPS.
I also see the Cubs gave the reverse bullpen test to Ty’relle Harris in Tennessee tonight and it didn’t go well. After 24 pretty decent innings out of the pen (meh K and BB #s) he got shelled tonight as a starter.

Yeah, Cubs get 2 picks if they offer arbitration, which they would. They’d get the other team’s 1st round pick ( I don’t think top 15 picks are protected anymore either) and they’d get a supplemental pick.
