Jose Bautista has more home runs than all these Cubs players combined: Geovany Soto, Koyie Hill, Jeff Baker, Darwin Barney, Blake DeWitt, Starlin Castro, Aramis Ramirez, Tony Campana, Reed Jonson, Kosuke Fukudome, Tyler Colvin, and Marlon Byrd. Bautista has 18 and those players have combined for 15.

The following players have combined for one more walk than Jose Bautista has: Darwin Barney, Starlin Castr, Alfonso Soriano, Tyler Colvin, Marlon Byrd, Koyie Hill, Jeff Baker, Reed Johnson, Blake DeWitt, and all the pitchers on the Cubs.

Ryan Braun has as many stolen bases as the Cubs (10).

Jose Reyes has nearly twice as many steals as the Cubs. Reyes, Michael Bourn, Jacoby Ellsbury, Drew Stubbs, Elvis Andrus, Ian Desmond, Coco Crisp, Matt Kemp, Erick Aybar, Sam Fuld, Ichiro Suzuki, Jose Tabata, Carlos Gomez, and Will Venebale, along with Ryan Braun, have as many or more stolen bases than the Cubs do.

9 players have more intentional walks than the entire Cubs team does. Another 7 have the same number.

Only the Giants have swung at as many pitches outside the zone as the Cubs have.

The Dodgers have swung at 47.2% of the pitches they’ve seen. That’s the second highest percentage. The Cubs have swung at 48.2%. The Yankees and Indians have swung at only 42.8%.

No team has hit fewer balls in the air than the Cubs.

    That is all.

SK, I don’t think Byrd will play for a long time. I’d actually be surprised if he returns this year, too. I won’t be surprised if he never plays again. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to get back into the box after something like that. We don’t know anything about the eye sight yet either.

They’re not manly. That’s why, for example, it took forever before the NHL mandated visors for all players.

They also have that weird pitcher helmet to protect the pitcher from line drives, but I think most pitchers would shun those because they look so uncool.

The extended ear flap I’ve seen gives the player a clear line of sight to the pitcher while protecting the cheekbone, so there’s that. It obviously won’t protect the guy from foul balls that bounce off the dirt right back into their face, but a direct fastball to the helmet won’t hurt as bad as it did to Byrd last night.

I think that’s the same thing the Michigan team was wearing, Dub. It wasn’t a typical helmet, but I never thought about cricket. There’s a clear space there for the eyes to see out that I don’t see vision as an excuse. It’s like RC said, they won’t look cool if they wear one of them. Then again, they won’t spend time in the hospital like Byrd is right now either.

They’re also surprisingly lightweight, baseball would have a quicker swing or hack then the more deliberate cricket stroke. I don’t understand why they can’t wear a hockey-style helmet or a football helmet either. Part of it is comfort, for sure, but football and hockey mask/helmet setups are designed to maximize visibility as far as I can tell.

It sounds from just about everything I’ve read that Byrd has vision so I think he just needs his face bones to heal. So that’s good news, relatively speaking.

They overpaid him and he’s a millstone, but they’ve been smart enough to limit the damage he can cause by leaving him on the bench (especially during last year’s stretch run). Two starting pitchers got injured after opening day while two in the minor leagues were injured. That’s 4 that were higher on the depth chart than Russell. It’s just not accurate to say he’s the best spot-starter they have. He might be now, but that speaks to how damn deep the Cubs rotation was when the season began. I think the angst that a lot of us have (well, at least me) about Russell continuing to be run out there as a starter is that he is awful. To my knowledge, the Cubs haven’t won any of the games he has started, and he’s been pretty bad when asked to start. The Cubs are (seemingly) willing to throw games away by running him out there every 5 days even though they know he’s going to get shelled and that the bullpen is going to get worked.
And yet, even you admit they’re both still better options. Which was Dolan’s point. The point isn’t that the Cubs org is so shallow Russell is all they have; the point is the org is so dumb they think Russell is all they have.
Dude, they have 3 injured starters. Are we honestly going to criticize this organization because they don’t have an adequate starter to take over if 3 big leaguers get hurt and 2 minor leaguers go down? This is literally the least of the Cubs problems. James Russell starting tonight says nothing about the Cubs organization. it says nothing about what the Cubs think. It says the Cubs organization has gotten fucked over by injuries. It happens. I know you want to blame everything on Quade and that’s fine (he’s an idiot), but this isn’t on him or the Cubs. It’s like Berselius said earlier. This is the exact same as the people complaining that the Cubs couldn’t replace their best hitter in 2009 when Ramirez went out with the shoulder separation.

By the way, I did not say they were better options. I said I’d have gone with them. Believe it or not, even Mike Quade knows infinitely more about baseball, this team and his players than you or I do. Maybe Sean Marshall doesn’t want to start. Maybe he’s like Soriano and doesn’t want to be jerked around. I don’t know, but before I even consider getting upset at the Cubs for not using him I better know one way or the other. Samardzija better than Russell? No. Not at all. He’d have walked 47 Red Sox by now. Maybe the Cubs believe it wouldn’t benefit Marshall to be jerked around between the rotation and bullpen.

All I know is that the Cubs have had 3 starters go down at the big league level and 2 went down at the minor league level early on. One of them has sucked since returning. The Cubs went out and picked up a guy hoping to not have to use Russell again and he was the best available. Then another starter goes down.
Yeah, but the question is what are their options? I’m going to assume the Cubs have determined they aren’t messing with Sean Marshall for one reason or another. I don’t know why, but it’s off the table. Maybe Marshall doesn’t want to do it. I don’t know. Knowing that, what options do they really have?
