The extended ear flap I’ve seen gives the player a clear line of sight to the pitcher while protecting the cheekbone, so there’s that. It obviously won’t protect the guy from foul balls that bounce off the dirt right back into their face, but a direct fastball to the helmet won’t hurt as bad as it did to Byrd last night.

I think that’s the same thing the Michigan team was wearing, Dub. It wasn’t a typical helmet, but I never thought about cricket. There’s a clear space there for the eyes to see out that I don’t see vision as an excuse. It’s like RC said, they won’t look cool if they wear one of them. Then again, they won’t spend time in the hospital like Byrd is right now either.
They’re also surprisingly lightweight, baseball would have a quicker swing or hack then the more deliberate cricket stroke. They’d probably slow down a runner in baseball who rely more on pure speed then a cricket batsman running between the creases, but it seems like something at least looking in to in this day and age.

I don’t understand why they can’t wear a hockey-style helmet or a football helmet either. Part of it is comfort, for sure, but football and hockey mask/helmet setups are designed to maximize visibility as far as I can tell.
It sounds from just about everything I’ve read that Byrd has vision so I think he just needs his face bones to heal. So that’s good news, relatively speaking.

To my knowledge, the Cubs haven’t won any of the games he has started, and he’s been pretty bad when asked to start. The Cubs are (seemingly) willing to throw games away by running him out there every 5 days even though they know he’s going to get shelled and that the bullpen is going to get worked.

Barney stayed there on that one. Haven’t paid much attention to him covering 2nd base so far this year. Not a good throw by Castillo, but Barney held his own. At least the ball got to 2nd base in the air.

The best part about this game is that this signals the end of the toughest part of the schedule. This Mets series coming up is probably the first one they’ll be favored in in six weeks or so.
