• OV Pic of the Day: Remembering #10

The Cubs won. Reed Johnson had a pretty good day.  Starlin Castro did not.  But the highlight of the day was the unveiling of the statue of Ron Santo on the corner of Addison and Sheffield.

It isn’t Cooperstown, but you look pretty good there, Big Boy.
If there’s anyone who could do it, it’s Campana. But it takes a good read and usually you have to do it against a left-hander. Coco Crisp stole home for the A’s this year. He got halfway down the line before the pitcher delivered b/c he never saw him.
I saw something this year that i had never seen before and I legit think we could see it in a cubs game this year in the right circumstances.

I was at a Nats Phillies game in Washington. John Lannan was on the mound for Washington with Victorino at third and Ryan Howard at the plate.

The third baseman was playing at SS and Victorino was literally 30 % up the line while Lannan was still in the stretch. By the time started his windup Victorino was literally half way down the line without even trying. With a lefty on the mound, Victorino at third (rollins would work too i suppose or any fast runner) and Howard at the plate i dont know why they dont try to steal home every time.

There is literally no way that the runner on third will ever be picked off (Lannan isnt getting to third before Victorino gets back, the 3B wont be able to get back since A. victorino can see him if hes waiting to go and B. 3B are typically slow). I was mind boggled.

I tutnred to my gf and said I might see something in a baseball game i have never seen (an attempt of home) Needless to say it didnt happen, but it made me think that you have a higher % chance of getting the run home that way then you do with ryan howard against a lefty…

Needless to say if this situation ever exists with Campana and Pena i say he goes for home. (I still cant beleive they would shift the third baseman on that play.

Catcher: Neftali Rosario, Chicago Cubs A sixth-round pick out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, Rosario’s $150,000 bonus is one of the biggest in the round. The 18-year-old has lived up to expectations by showing excellent receiving skills with a plus arm while surprising with his bat, hitting .340/.375/.566 in limited action for the Cubs complex team in Arizona.

Big names unsigned: Cubs second-round pick Dan Vogelbach is an exceedingly beefy bat-only slugger with huge power potential, and it will take big money to sign him away from Florida

      Brett Jackson (Cubs)
Solicited Response: Appeared on every list
TCF: Jackson lacks the ceiling of every other player on this list, yet his name appeared on all solicited responses. He’s Mr. Solid-Average; he is a good but not great defensive center fielder, but he will be able to play the position in the majors because he has enough speed and quickness for range, his routes are improving, and his arm is at least average. At the plate, Jackson is a good but not great hitter, with some pop but some miss in the swing, though his approach isn’t wild and he’ll be able to reach base. Again, Jackson lacks the tools to be a star, but he’ll be Mr. Solid-Average at the major-league level, and that’s an extremely valuable commodity to have under team control for six seasons.

I don’t like aggy allowing SEC teams into Texas. That and playing in a league with reduced academic standards, and it sure seems like they’re cutting off their nose to spite their face.

I would think Texas would be independent, join the Pac 12 with OU or form a small conference with ND, OU and BYU.

The Big Ten or Pac 12 could lower their academic standards and be just as good as the SEC, but they won’t. Academics matter at least a little in all parts f the country except the SEC. Yeah, but Texas has been doing a good job of picking from the talent in Texas. They’ll have a harder time doing that if they’re playing fewer games in Texas and LSU, Alabama and Auburn are visiting every other year.

The SEC was well represented at the top of this year’s draft.

Last year, 5 of the top 6 picks were from the Big 12. Rutgers, Idaho and South Florifa had first rounders.

2009: Nice mix, though the ACC had the most top picks.

2008: Two ACC kids were picked before the first SEC kid. Boise, Troy, Tenn. St., Delaware, East Carolina and South Florida had first rounders.

If you want to play for a MNC, pick an SEC school (though, really only in the last five years). If you want to play in the NFL and you’re good enough, go pretty much wherever the fuck you want.

I don’t know which will be the best over the next 25 years, but acting as though the last 10 years when we have a history of more than 10 times that is ridiculous. I assume you mean Notre Dame. I’m sure they’d be pissed, but there’s a 0% chance it happens. Notre Dame, athletically and academically, are a prefect match for the Big Ten. Rumor is they’re less insistent now on remaining independent and have leaned more in the direction of joining the Big Ten than ever before, but they still have a lot of old people in charge who think being independent matters in this day and age.

I also think the Big Ten is the one place where Texas could join that would make sense to make the sacrifices they’d have to (Longhorn Network being one of them). As I’ve said before, if this comes down to money, Texas is joining the Big Ten at some point. And I think most of the decisions regarding conference realignment are about money. Not all, but most.

We saw how little impact the coaches had on the process when every single Big Ten coach was against the 9-game conference schedule and yet every school voted in favor of it.

More than anything, I think Nebraska was out in the cold in the Big 12 in academics and it wasn’t really a conference, but rather a confederation. Promises of it being a conference were made and for obvious reasons the confederation stuck around. All the schools in the Big Ten are on equal footing so while there would no doubt be some hate leftover, the reasons for it would be gone. I’m not saying it’s justified. The worst thing about that game is that Mack forgot about this. He decided he didn’t like running an offense so dependent on one person. That hit lost us the MNC for sure, but it also caused that abortion of an offense leading to 5-7 last year.

Besides, if Hendry really wanted Colvin to get consistent playing time, he could swap him out for BJax and let Colvin try to solve his problems in the minors. Or call up Montenez. Hell Montenez was making more contact than Colvin.

If he’s going to produce less than replacement you’re better off not playing him in terms of value received. Colvin isn’t exactly young, we basically know what he can do, and I wouldn’t be playing him over Reed Johnson either. We’re not talking about a player with a future of being an every day player. At best he’s a 4th or 5th outfielder. If he can’t take that job away from another 4th or 5th outfielder then he isn’t even that.

Marm comes in with the tying run on first and no outs. He walks the first batter and then balks, so the tying run is on third and go-ahead run on second with no outs (win probability = 38.9 %!). I’m still amazed he got out of that one.
