As far as I can tell, the heat opened up a parallel universe where Roy Halladay is mediocre and Rodrigo Lopez is awesome. Or something. The heat definitely played a role as Halladay was forced from the game in the 5th inning after already allowing three runs on seven hits… or so the Phillies would have us believe.

I’d really prefer if Aramis wanted to be traded, but I can’t really stand all the talking heads telling him what he should and shouldn’t do. This is one of those cases that mb talks about wherein sports, fans seem to side with ownership more than the employees.

Like you, I’d prefer Ramirez accept a trade, but he has 10 and 5 rights so he’s earned the right to decline a trade for whatever reason. He won’t be the first to do so.
I should add that there was all this talk this time last year about Lee not accepting a trade and he even declined one, but later accepted one. I’m guessing Ramirez is in the same situation, but whether or not that option kicks in if trades is a big deal because very few teams, if any, would have interest in Ramirez if that option kicks in.

If Ramirez continues to hit as he has lately I think most teams would covet having that option kick-in because 1-year at 16M is going to be much cheaper than attempting to sign him on the FA Market. I think he will likely command a 3/36 or more on the FA Market.

I think they will go hard after signing one of Fielder and Pujols and will indicate to Ramirez that they plan to sign him to an extension if they sign either one.
I am expecting Hendry to trade for a starter this deadline. I think they are a sleeper for Jimenez.
Why would Brian Cashman accept a demotion and take the Cubs GM job? If he gets fired and I doubt he does, he’s not going to take a job with the Cubs. He’d be better off becoming the GM of the Yankees AAA team. That would actually be less of a demotion than taking the Cubs gig.

The part where Aramis is allegedly going to void the option may throw a monkey-wrench into the “one more year” plan. I don’t know that he’d void it for sure to become a free agent, but I think it’s a legitimate concern because if the Cubs want his services for 2012 they might have to give him a multi-year deal, which would piss off all the fans who think he’s a lazy dog who doesn’t produce until the games don’t matter…
So I’m leaning towards no Aramis in 2012.

I don’t see Aramis returning next year. He may be the best option, but I think the Cubs lower payroll and go with someone like Baker and Flaherty at 3rd and that may be as good as Ramirez anyway.

They won’t contend this way but I think this is the smarter thing to do.
I agree. Unless they have a spending spree again they have little chance of contending other than getting lucky. As we’ve seen with the Pirates, you can have a bad team and still get lucky so why spend the money when you’re still left hoping to get lucky?
