I like how the lone White Sox fan is commiserating with the sea of Cubs fans.
Given the amount of interest reported in Jimenez, the Cubs REALLY need to at least explore dealing Garza or Dempster. If the Yankees are asking, you can try to get Betances or Banuelos back. I wonder if the Cubs could trade Garza and Soto to NYY for Betances and Montero. That would cover 1B and SP for 2012, and the Cubs could then sign CJ Wilson and someone else who can hit.

We learn to expect defeat and are prepared for events like the ones that unfolded in the soccer match today. Can you imagine how crushing today would be for people whose teams actually succeed when presented with an opportunity? Today barely even phased Cubs fans.
If anyone is actually watching the Red Sox-Rays game, the Sox LF just made an incredible catch at the wall. Awesome. To the 11th!

My question is: if we give Randy Johnson the record for most strikeouts in a 9-inning game that went into extras, why don’t we give Harvey Haddix credit for a perfect game?

I don’t think you can call it a perfect game if it’s lost in extras. If some reliever had come in for the 12th or whatever inning he lost it in and then finished it up it probably would’ve been considered a combined perfecto. But Haddix lost it and that seems pretty straightforward. If he had pitched an extra-innings perfect game though, it would’ve been the stuff of megalegend, but everybody still knows that he had one up until he lost it.
If he had pitched 9 perfect innings and then left, then I think they give him credit for nine perfect innings but there’s no perfect game unless the relievers can keep baserunners off as well.
The Randy Johnson thing is pretty interesting though. Sort of similar to Haddix, I think that just because his team couldn’t exactly score for him, you can’t take away his 9-inning record (tied, anyway), just as you can’t say Haddix sucked because he couldn’t complete a perfect game in extras. He can only control his contribution on the mound and that day it was a pretty awesome contribution.

I’m surprised to hear Neyer say that. Most of the complaints I heard about Fenway pre-renovation suggested that it was a worse place to see a game than Wrigley. Apparently all the seats were designed for people even shorter than I am, and a lot of them didn’t directly face the field.
Wrigley is a dump but I’ll always defend it because the upper deck box seats >> all other seats in baseball, view-wise.

Fenway is fine, but the seat angles in some of the areas are weird and they are very small. They all seem to be the same size as the Upper Deck reserved seats in Wrigley, and maybe a little smaller. I’ve never been super-comfortable at a game in Fenway. I’ve never sat in the infield, so maybe that’s different.

I imagine Fenway has about as many obstructed views as Wrigley does, and being an older ballpark, they’d have more Smurf-seats than Wrigley does. I didn’t realize people were so small back then. I’m not that big of a guy and I have issues getting to my seat and find them cramped at Wrigley, so I can imagine how Fenway folks might feel.

If you have an unobstructed view from the upper deck (the 400s are pretty much unobstructed and most of the 500s are okay) then you have a pretty good view of the entire field just about anywhere you sit up there. So I’m in agreement with what b says.

I like that I can see the whole field, not be a million miles away, and not have beer vendors and other people constantly walking between me and the action. They are the best upper deck seats I’ve ever seen. In the lower section it seems like there is always somebody in my way that’s pissing me off.
So unless I can afford the Ricketts’ seats down by the Cubs on-deck circle, or right behind the dugout or something, the upper deck are the best seats accessible by people with normal human budgets. in my opinion.
Some prefer the left field foul pole.

No 400 seat is obstructed. 500 level can be annoying because the walkway is between the section and the field. but they are about 1/4 to 1/3 the price of UD box.
Bottom line is that the last row of the 500 level in Wrigley is closer than the first row of the upper deck at the Cell.

I usually get 500s level seats and I can either move to a non-obstructed area or down to the 400s if I want to. Free/$1 tickets FTW.

I’m a bit biased, but unless there is something pretty unique about the situation (Monster seats, the overlook of McCovey Cove, right by an on-deck circle, etc.) the best seats for me are upper deck behind home plate and Wrigley upper deck is the best I’ve been in. So take that for what it’s worth.

I figure I should probably sit in the bleachers at least once, but other than being able to catch a home run ball, I don’t really see the appeal of it. I was also really surprised that the bleacher ticket prices were similar to the upper deck seat prices.
