MLB, NPB reach agreement on posting system

In News And Rumors by dmick89100 Comments

It was reported last week, but it's apparently become official now and will go into effect as soon as next week

So, the NPB team sets the posting fee in advance and it can go up as high as $20 million. Then MLB teams submit bids and all teams that bid the value that the NPB team set can negotiate with the player.

For example, Masahiro Tanaka's team will set the posting fee at $20 million and all 30 teams can then submit a bid. All the teams who submit bids of $20 million will get to negotiate with Tanaka.

Assuming the Cubs aren't idiots, they will bid $20 million and take it from there. They probably don't end up signing him and the amount he gets could be absurdly high due to the new system, but they have to at least bid the maximum amount here.

You could start a Cubs blog with four or five basic articles ready to publish at any minute.

    The Cubs suck
The Cubs rebuilding will take forever
    The Cubs signed Mediocre Player
    Mediocre Player projections
Prospects could be really good some day

There. You’ve got a blog. Spend 12 hours writing those articles and you have 2+ years worth of articles to publish.

Yeah, but there are already 100 of those Cubs blogs. OV has a different model to serve its readership, since it also includes:

    49er mock drafts
    cooking tips
commentary on somewhat popular TV shows, but not Glee
    strange and exciting pictures
spirited debates over things long-settled, like the size of a teaspoon
    and more, more, more.

(dying laughing), for the last month or so, there was a PSA billboard on my way to work that reminded people that raw meats and cooked foods shouldn’t mix. It always reminded me of the remedial parenting class that the Simpsons had to take where the instructor pointed out “Garbage goes in the garbage can people, I can’t stress this enough!”

As usual, this is based on current draft order and nfldraftscout rankings:

    1. HOU: Bridgewater
    2. ATL (via STL via WAS): Clowney – ATL ensures no one jumps them.
    3. STL (via ATL): Matthews – QB is an option here.
    4. MIN: Carr – At this rate, they might have to move up to get him.
    5. JAX: Manziel – JAX has shown they don’t give a fuck about the draft. They take who they want.
    6. CLE: Anthony Barr – Looked like a sure thing they’d take a QB here a few weeks ago.
    7. OAK: Sammy Watkins
    8. BUF: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn – I think he declares, tests well and goes early.
    9. TB: Jace Amaro, TE, tech
    10. PIT: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
    16. GB: Darqueze Dennard, CB, MSU – I don’t think he makes it this far. Shutdown corner and easily bpa here.
    17. CHI: Trent Murphy – Easy pick.
    26. SF: Davante Adams, WR, Fresno

    1. What the hell is going on with Shanahan/Washington? Dude, just resign. Organization a disaster, likely Snyder’s fault.

    2. Jameis Winston case. Pissed me off. Something weird with legal system in America, especially related to rape cases. Why does legal precedent so often function in direct conflict with science? Limited memory in the case of rape victims is always the excuse for why a case can’t be pursued. Problematically, neurology is now fully aware that absence of memory is evidence that a trauma occurred. That’s how the brain functions to protect the human organism- the hippocampus doesn’t record short-term memory during the incident, or something along those lines. Ever known anyone who had a serious car-wreck but didn’t recall the details? Yea, try telling that person that it didn’t happen if they can’t remember it.

I went out and got some one inch spikes for my cleats but didn’t get to use them. We had a team scrimmage on Sat and the field was sloppy from rain and it was pretty difficult to keep my footing.

I think it was about Sept 2012 and I think it got resolved by petering out. As I recall, Josh was making an argument that a teaspoon wasn’t a standardized unit of measure because of molecular alignment of the vessel or something. I think it all got started because I made the comment that no matter how manly some people claimed to be, in the end their teaspoon was still just a teaspoon. I’m pretty sure that was an off-hand remark to something else and it took off from there, which is how some of the most hilarious and unusual comment threads at OV get going. The chat-worthiness of the late 2012 Cubs wasn’t much different than the Dec 2013 Cubs, so it’s no surprise we digressed.

What is Glee’s current VAR (viewers above replacement) and is it following a similar trajectory as other 6 season shows?
Does the singing ratio of an episode or season (time spent singing ÷ total show time) predict quality? And is that quality best expressed by someone named Siera?
Which Glee star is most like Carlos Zambrano, much maligned but still quite productive on the set?

Julie had a good post and I understood one of her main points to be that prosecutors have a responsibility to take cases to trial if they believe their clients even if they will have tough time with the evidence. On the balance, I agree with that.

On the other hand, prosecutors also have a responsibility to spend public funds wisely and to manage the media circus. As one of the comments on Julie’s post said (inartfully, as I recall), the effects of false accusal on the (usually) male can also be devastating if the accusations are false. (Which I think was the case in the Duke Lacrosse episode, right? Or do I misremember?) Especially since the public makes up its mind before the jury does.

I’ve often wondered if we wouldn’t be better to reform our legal system’s SOP in some way to shield both the accuser and accusee from public disclosure of identity until a decision to prosecute has been made or the jury decides (whichever is last). At which point, transcripts can be released or whatever. If a rapist is convicted, it still becomes public. Perhaps a more private process would help to reassure women that they would be heard and that decisions would not just be made on the basis of conviction rates and the rep of the accused.

Someone close to the Cubs front office is telling me that a deal for Price is in place, pending a Josh Vitters physical.

The Angels said they were looking to improve their defense at second base and were willing to trade surplus outfield depth to do so. They are talking Barney for Trout. The hang-up seems that the Cubs refuse to make up the difference in salaries due to a cash crunch since the new outfield signage has yet to be installed.

They could, but I’ve been saying since Trestman came aboard that CHI would be wise to let Cutler walk. McCown hasn’t been great, but his play shows exactly how valuable the QB is to the WCO. I know CHI is doing much more than just that, but his scheme is to QBs what the Cover 2 is to CBs.

Besides, they need to reserve that franchise tag for Melton in case he doesn’t sign a new deal.

    WaLi wrote:

They’re trying to. Actually, Derek Carr is Cutler 2.0. Bortles is close to Locker athletically, but much more advanced as a QB, imo.

They’d be wise. But CHI fans should trust Trestman when it comes to a QB. There are plenty of options available.

I’d be extremely hesitant to go forward in 2014 without Cutler. I think the Bears cut Peppers (obviously), get a long-term deal done with Melton, and franchise Cutler while drafting his replacement. Going with 3 QBs kinda sucks roster-wise but it’s the best decision with the makeup of the team IMO. If you don’t re-sign Cutler, you’d have to get someone besides McCown to start, as good as he’s looked thus far.

Also, does Alvin understand that you don’t know ahead of time which offer is the “best possible offer” you will receive?

“Even if we feel the 2013 Winter Meetings is the peak of Jeff Samardzija’s trade value, we can’t move him unless we know for sure we are getting the best possible offer. Even if we get a good offer, we might get the best possible offer at the 2014 trade deadline. In that case, we can accept that trade. If we don’t get the best possible offer then, we can always go back and accept the 2013 Winter Meetings offer, which will still be on the table.” – Alvin

What I hate about those discussions is that “now” is almost always the better time to trade a player in terms of getting talent in return. People only use that argument to include the point about value. It’s annoying. Now is the better time to trade Jeff Samardzija (assuming return is all that matters). Last year would have been better.

I understand this thinking (especially from Bears fans). I’m just saying that you shouldn’t be surprised to see it happen. What Trestman wants to do offensively can be accomplished with several QBs from which he can choose this off-season. It’s pretty much a matter of how much money you want to pay the QB.

Also a matter of where we want to spend that money right? Can the Bears find better bang for our buck paying defense FA’s and picking up a cheap QB or drafting a QB, or would it be better to spend money on Cutler and draft defense.

I guess you could save money on Cutler, but he’s probably an above average QB. I think the Bears inability to pick up short yardage is due to McCown being there and not Cutler. McCown just can’t scramble in the backfield and create plays like Cutler can (for better or worse).

    @ Like You Care:
I agree Ryno. The franchise tag for QBs is $16 million. That is a lot of money to allocate to a position that seems to be easily filled. Seeing the success McCown has had should make that clear to anyone. Besides needing to sign Melton to a long term deal, the Bears have the following players becoming free agents at the end of this season:

    Tillman
    Jennings
    Bowman
    D. J. Williams
    Major Wright
    Wootton
    Nate Collins
    Matt Slauson

And there’s more but there mostly depth. So the Bears have to make a decision on three CBs, a SS, two 3tech DTs, a DE, a LG and if you’ve been watching Bostic, then re-signing Williams or another MLB is probably in the Bears best interest. The Bears have far too many holes on this defense to justify a long term contract to the QB position. Especially with the weapons on this team.

You’re more than welcome to write something. I know you have before though I can’t remember exactly what it was.

We used to do a lot more writing around here than we have been over the last year. That’s mostly my fault. I’ve been dealing with pain for more than that amount of time. There’s always something to write about. It’s just a matter of doing it. And right now, I don’t have the energy or tolerance to look around and find it like I once did. Myles is just super busy.

For several months I ignored the pain and kept on writing at the same pace, but once I slowed down and learned that it least gives me some relief, it’s very hard to get back into it.

That said, I’ve switched to a standing desk. I’ve had four people suggest it over the last year: a doctor, physical therapist, Josh (from here) and berselius. I figured I’d finally look into it after brushing it off as nonsense for so long and it really does help. Not that the pain is gone and it may never be, but I can at least be at the computer for several hours without agonizing pain.

I’m just reluctant to start looking around for shit to write because I fear I’ll find it and then get worse.

Like Myles, I’m sorry for not being as productive here as you guys had come to expect over the last 10 years. I really do wish I could be. I miss it, but not so much that I’m eager to experiment when the result could be additional pain.

If you’re looking for an idea, I read yesterday that the Cubs were or maybe were interested in Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen. Hoyer has said that teams have inquired about Starlin Castro, but “they’re happy to have Starlin”. Also read the Cubs would consider trading a prospect in the right deal (duh!). Is it worth going after Shin-Soo Choo even at the cost?

There are several ideas worth exploring, but sadly, I haven’t gotten to any of them.

    DT
    Melton: Must get.
Other options: Jason Hatcher, Lamarr Houston (similar 3T) and Linval Joseph (more of a NT, imo).

    DE
Michael Johnson, Brian Orakpo or Greg Hardy: This is where you use Cutler’s money. Not sure which of these guys are gettable, but they’d all greatly improve the CHI defense with a healthy Melton.
Other options: Anthony Spencer, Justin Tuck, Jared Allen. Even the second tier would be an improvement.

CB: Vontae Davis: Vernon’s brother is an underrated young CB that would fit well in CHI’s defense. I wouldn’t waste too much money on CBs in a Cover 2.
Other options: Tarell Brown (Lot of Texas guys on this list…), Alterraun Verner, Aquib Talib and DRC. Very good cover CBs, but that’s wasted money, imo.

S: TJ Ward, CLE. He’s the best safety most people don’t know. He’ll probably command some cash, though, since there aren’t many other options out there.
Other options: Kerry Rhodes is a very good player that many people think is gay. Possibly why he’s not on a team right now?

    Draft options for those positions…

    DT (3T)
Aaron Donald (PIT): Geno Atkins light. Undersized, but he’s like a lightning bolt off the snap.
Ra’shede Hageman (MIN): I like him more as a 5T, but he’s an option to replace Melton.
Dom Easley (FLA): Would have been the first DT off the board before his ACL injury. If his medicals check out, could be this year’s Tank Carradine.

    DE
Trent Murphy (STAN): Don’t be fooled by his whiteness. He’s the best combination of potential and high floor at this position.
Kony Ealy (MIZ): Poor man’s Aldon Smith. Needs to work on technique, but CHI should be all over this guy.
Jackson Jeffcoat (TEX): Frame to add a few pounds. Needs to improve against the run.

    S
Clinton-Dix (ALA): It’s him and then everyone else, imo. If you want a FS in the draft, make one out of a CB or take him early.
Ahmad Dixon (BAY): Athletic freak but an idiot. If someone can educate him, he’ll be a force at SS.
Deone Bucannon (WSU)/Craig Loston (LSU): Same player. Similar to Dashon Goldson.

    CB
Just look for big, physical CBs in the mid rounds. Guys like Kyle Fuller (VT), Aaron Colvin (OKLA), Stanley Jean-Baptiste (NEB), etc.

I also think CHI is lacking a MLB to make their defense work. I thought Kiko Alonso was that guy for them last year, but BUF grabbed him first. Someone like ALA’s CJ Mosely or FSU’s Christian Jones would help immensely.

Colin Kaepernick is up for a new contract after this season. He has three regular season games and possibly the playoffs to prove he’s a franchise QB. If he doesn’t show that he can progress through his reads (and stop missing wide open options) and take the next step, I predict SF drafts a replacement QB this year…and I think it’ll be Blake Bortles.
