Josh Vitters hit his 10th HR of the year and is now slugging .468 on the year. Brett Jackson was 1-4 with a BB and a pair of strikeouts. His K rate as of his last 10 games is a smooth 50 %.
Alcantara is officially a prospect in my mind what he is doing in Daytona is a good job for a young middle infielder in the FSL. Last night he went 3-4 with a BB and stole his 20th base of the year.
Dong Yub Kim was a high priced Korean sign a few years back and he went 2-4 last night after hitting his first HR the other day. Rock Shoulders has drawn 5 walks in 17 AB's which is good, but also struck out 8 times which is not as good.
The AZL team kicks off its season tonight so we can get a look at some of the early signs of the 2012 class as well as Vogelbach.

Vitters HR was a bomb, but was overshadowed by the upper deck blast hit by the Express’s 1b a few minutes earlier.
Bjax showed some good speed scoring from first on a double early in the game. He looked awful on both strikeouts. He swung and missed on three straight pitches for the first one.
No Rizzo HR = shoulda asked for my money back (dying laughing)
Alcantara has definitely become a prospect worth keeping an eye on, but I don’t think he’s as much of a prospect as DJ does. He was terrible last year at Peoria. His strikeout rate has gone down each of his 3 years here, but his walk rate has too.

Per the last thread, there’s definitely an ownership bias among fans. You feel like the things you have are worth more than they are. If you don’t believe it, try to sell something you value for the price you think it’s worth. Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever sold anything in my life that I didn’t feel like I was taking a hit on.
@ josh:
Cars. How many people go trade their car in and come away saying they got a lot more money than they expected? How many feel like they were ripped off?
mb21 wrote:
That happened to me once! But I try really, ridiculously and gratuitously hard to undervalue the things I own as to not be depressed later. My car was worth like $1500 and I figured I’d be lucky to get $1000. So it was a pleasant surprise.
Trading in video games on the other hand…
Although I will say I would be stunned if Garza is traded without us getting a lot. I just think Garza is weirdly overvalued by everyone because he has shiny looking stuff and the results just don’t seem all that important. I mean he’d never had great results when we traded for him, his ZIP projections back then were, I’m pretty sure, worse than they are now, so while I’m sure he had more surplus value than the $0 he theoretically has now, I severely doubt it was 2 top 100 prospects + a couple middling guys. Or, really, even close to that. *shrug*
Doogolas wrote:
This is the type of argument I like against the trade value posts. From what I’ve seen, it’s players who are overvalued who end up getting more than we expect and Garza just might be one of them. The Cubs gave up way more than they should have though that deal probably looks pretty good right now. Pinetar mentioned last night that he had proven he can pitch in the AL East and that’s another one because it overvalues him.
I won’t be the least bit surprised if the Cubs get more, but they didn’t come close to getting their asking price before the season and my guess is that they just sign him to an extension. I just don’t think there are that many teams who feel they need a Matt Garza at this point.

MB–you should meet my mom. She makes Bubbles look like Eeyore and Droopy, rolled into one. In September, after the Hope Monster has sucked up all the lost hope of other Cubs fans and it’s feeling a little dry, it moves to Mom’s house, because she is still denying they are out of it, and the workings of basic math.
mb21 wrote:
Possibly, but there are so many weird things with last offseason. I mean with the whole new CBA and everything were there any really big trades that went down? I feel like it’s perfectly reasonable that a lot of teams didn’t want to make any big moves with all the changes like the extra wild card spot and everything. I certainly can’t say for sure. I honestly have no real idea, but yeah, Garza just seems like one of those guys teams like more than they have any real reason to. I really want him to be traded but obviously only if something nice comes back, because the minors are more interesting to follow than this God awful major league team we have. At least until Rizzo is called up.
@ mb21:
I had a 15-yr-old Chrysler 5th Ave hand-me-down that I hated. HATED. Someone (who needed a lot of space to fit in the front seat) offered me $2500, and I took it without looking back. Not sure if anyone won that deal, but I think I did, because I didn’t have to drive that damn car anymore.
Probably the buyer overpaid because of his girth, so maybe that supports Doogolas’ “Garza pitches well in the AL East” point.
@ SVB:
That’s a bit different. Bubbles thinks EVERY prospect is going to work out and already has his everyday lineup ready for 2013 with guys like Baez, Vogelbach, and next year’s top pick. Seriously. The Cubs top pick next June will be in the Cubs lineup on opening day. They all work and they’re all awesome. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m not the least bit surprised he would think something is stupid that doesn’t reflect his opinion of how awesome the Cubbies are.
@ mb21:
I think a big reason they didn’t get what they were asking for before the season started, was because they were asking for the entire solar system hoping someone would be stupid and desperate enough to give it to them. They really had nothing to lose going about it that way either.
@ mb21:

Couldn’t resist a Doctor Who reference.
Carry on.
Anyone else think that Castro’s defense has looked a lot better in the past few weeks? Whatever the Cubs coaches are doing, it seems to be working.
@ Berselius:
For sure. He’s been much improved, from what I’ve seen.
@ Berselius:
Although that circus catch was 99% luck.
@ Berselius:
My lying eyes tell me he doesn’t suck as much. He’ll make the occasional bobble, but that happens to all shortstops on bad hops and hot shots.
the fans are anxious though. They need they 21 year old to play great d, hit for more power and walk like Barry Bonds. NOW!
@ Rice Cube:
No SS is going to be perfect, but I can’t remember him airmailing throws into the stands lately like he was frequently doing early in the season.
Bubbles is optimistic. And we will get surplus value for both Dmpster and Garza if traded (just watch)
Also what is wrong with getting excited for our exciting hitters in minors?
Rizzo, Baez, Almora, Jackson. Soler are kids to be excited about
@ Berselius:
His throws seem more deliberate and confident. I’ve noticed that he takes a fraction of a second to collect himself before he fires the ball, rather than just letting it go right after he gets it out of his glove. They probably told him that he has the arm strength to allow for some extra time to set up the throw.
@ SVB:
Maybe I’m biased because I’m a Cubs fan, but it seems to me that Cubs fans really are the best at creating unrealistic expectations and clinging to unwarranted hope.
@ Rice Cube:
I agree. He seemed much more eager to whip the ball right away last year. And the times he did take his time, he seemed to overthink it. He’s doesn’t seem to be doing either one. Maybe he uses that second to sing a little ditty in his mind or something.
@ Doogolas:
Gio Gonzalez and Mat Latos were both traded. Huge surplus value there. Maybe the biggest trades in the last two or three years.
josh wrote:

NL shortstops suck. There’s a pretty good chance Castro sneaks in to the ASG with Tulo still hurt.
What was Maddon mad about? Basically that he felt everyone puts pine tar on their gloves and Peralta got singled out? Or that everyone cheats in general and Peralta is going to suffer more than is fair?
Bubbles is the one with the beer, obviously.
@ bubblesdachimp:
If I find two similarly talented players on other teams I can guarantee you that you’d not say that. That’s the problem with being as optimistic as you are. It doesn’t allow you to be rational about this.
Now you’re saying cubs get more for dempster than he’s worth even though he’s on the DL for the 2nd time this year. We’re not even halfway through the season yet. He’s an injury risk at this point making a lot of money and has only this season left.
Mostly though you see everything through your Cubs colored glasses. There’s nothing wrong with that but it doesn’t allow you to be unbiased. There’s nothing wrong with being excted about prospects either. Just as long as you understand every team has a future lineup of all stars.

Oh okay, so in other words everyone has pinetar in their gloves and Davey called it out on Peralta so that Peralta would be disqualified. That is kind of a dick move.
Sometimes I wonder if it would make more sense for the Cubs to sign Garza to an extention. The Cubs will need pitching over the next couple seasons and they won’t be getting help anytime soon from their farm system. If extending Garza is a cheaper and better use of resources than bidding on Free Agents during the winter, I say extend away. I don’t feel like waiting for a core of homegrown pitchers.
For that matter, I’d rather the Cubs rebuild through free agency than wait for the farm system. No reason they can’t spend on Free Agents and build through the draft at the same time.
My parents are total fairweather fans.
@ Edwin:
That’s the long term plan, Edwin, but they have no assets at all right now. No reason for the Cubs to spend a ton of money right now to build an expensive 78 win team.
@ Berselius:
No more having to switch back from tab to tab. Sounds good to me.
@ Edwin:
I agree on both counts. Might as well extend him, unless the trade really is a surplus one as some have hoped.
I think they will get back into the free agent market, but after a couple of years of stockpiling prospects. Just the way I sense this team is going to approach it. Theo didn’t shy away from free agents he liked in Boston.

I liked B’s idea of keeping him until the end of his club control and then offering him the $12.5MM to go elsewhere and pocket the pick.
I didn’t get a chance to look closely at the Garza piece yesterday. How does Garza have no trade value before the draft picks? He’s still in his arb years so the Cubs should expect some discount on his value. Or do super 2 guys get 100% of their value in the last year?
I like holding on to Dempster for the draft picks, but I’d be much more amenable to trading Garza. Those picks have no value to a team trading for Dempster but I like the added value they net for Garza.
Pedobear is having a press conference outside the Sandusky trial.

Sandusky has suddenly decided not to testify. This coincides with this morning’s removal of a juror with no PSU ties (who had called in “sick” for a second time), and replaced her with a 2007 PSU grad. The speaker at the 2007 PSU Commencement? Jerry Sandusky.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
The comments on that first article are hilarious (dying laughing)
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Who the fuck gives a shit about who was their commencement speaker? I’ve been through three college graduation ceremonies and would struggle to remember who spoke at any of them.
I think the decision to not have him testify has much more to do with his rambling 5 minute answer to Bob Costas than anything else.
Brad took a look at Adolfo’s trade prospects
@ Berselius:
It’s just that the timing is curious. A large feature of Amendola’s opening statement was that Sandusky was taking the stand. He’s mentioned it at other points. Now a change in the jury where a PSU grad is brought in for a juror with no ties to PSU, and suddenly this major plank in defense is no longer an important piece. Sure the speaker thing is arbitrary. But it doesn’t make this morning’s events any less suspicious.
@ Berselius:
I thought that was OV’s bit?

@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I think it was just a bluff from the defense attorney. I think Sandusky is guilty as fuck but the need to find a conspiracy under every blade of grass in the yard of everyone that’s ever driven past State College is driving me nuts.
@ Berselius:
He’s set to make about $5+ million the rest of the way this year and the average of his PECOTA, Oliver and ZiPS forecasts for the rest of the season is 1.2 WAR over 116 innings. Over 200 innings that about 2.1 WAR and he’ll make about $12 million next year (made $9+ this year). So he’s owed about $17 million and will provide about $17 million in value. So not even taking age into account he’s projected for 3.3 WAR the through next season. Assuming some team offers him the mandatory contract, which may or may not be a good idea depending on how he pitches next year, at most he’s worth $5 million in a trade.
@ mb21:
I’m just confused by the lack of arb savings. It sounds like what’s happening is that Garza’s estimated talent level has dropped since the last arb settlement, but that should also drop his value for the next one so maybe $12m is wrong.

I’d have to question Sandusky’s intelligence even more than I already do if he were to take the stand. My guess is he’s found not guilty.
Someone on Reddit made this comment on one of my comics: “Just remember, we were bad when we last almost made the series!”
When would that have been? 2008? No we were good then. 2007? 2003, maybe? What about Prior and Wood? That’s flabbergasting.
i would be surprised if he is found innocent. I really would
As much as the water was muddied with the McQueary stuff, there were 8 victims personally testifying. He might not get charged for those specific counts but I’d be shocked if he gets cleared on everything.
plus if they do let him walk somebody will probably plug the fucker on their own.
@ josh:
I figure the commenter meant 2003. That team wasn’t exactly a world beater. But you need luck as much as you need skill.
@ mb21:
I’ll be shocked if a Pennsylvania jury convicts, despite the mountain of evidence. I mean, they have love letters from him to little boys and teenagers. They have an eyewitness. And I don’t think it’s going to matter, and not because they love Sandusky, but vindicating Sandusky also vindicates Paterno, and that’s what this is really all about.
But with Sandusky already being delivered a letter of intent from the feds, he’s going to jail one way or another.

Arbitration is more about escalation in salary than it is matching salary to value. If we’re trying to figure out how much someone like Castro will earn in arbitration over the next 4 years we use value, but once he has an arbitration hearing we’re much better off estimating it after that. Garza went from league minimum to $3.3 to $6 to $9.5. If he’s terrible the second half of the season he’s still going to get $10-11 million in arbitration next year. If he’s absolutely dominating it would probably be $13 million. There’s not much wiggle room here. Somewhere between $11 and $13 million is where Garza will be paid next season irregardless of his performance the rest of this season.

@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Glad to see it, but I’m not reading the articles. Not after every writer in Chicago attacked him for years. All of a sudden it’s different? Or are they trying to kiss Theo’s ass. Fuck them all.
@ Berselius:
They did slip into the post season, but Wood and Prior and Sosa. I don’t know if I’d call it a bad team, certainly not on the scale that this team is bad.
@ mb21:
I think they are trying to kiss Theo’s ass so Nick Cafardo stops getting all the breaks.
@ josh:
I definitely wouldn’t call it a bad team either. But I also wouldn’t call it the best team in baseball, or one of the best.
@ Berselius:
By the end of the season they were actually pretty good. At the beginning of the season nobody in their right mind thought they’d be playing in October. The Cubs added Ramirez to fill the black hole at 3rd base and Lofton to fill in for the injured Patterson. Zambrano had solidified himself in the rotation and marginalized Estes. By October they were a good team. Definitely not the best, but pretty good.
Eric Patterson got released. He put up decent numbers in the minors for us but it never really translated.
@ mb21:
I forgot what good production they got out of Grudzialanek that year
@ mb21:
It’s clearly kissing up to Theo. The whole undercurrent of this is “Soriano represents the past” so that’s why fans are so tired of him. Which doesn’t seem to address why this wholly unfair treatment of this one player pre-existed Theo and continues unabated and unaltered in form and fashion to the current day.
@ mb21:
Yeah, that deal with the Pirates turned that season around. That’s Hendry’s finest work, to my mind.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I think they were 51-55 at the time they made that trade. That’s one of his better trades. That and the Grudz/Karros deal. He had some nice free agent contracts. He was able to sign his own players to friendly contracts almost every single time. The players liked him and had respect for him. I imagine that had something to do with it.
Dan Wetzel says Sandusky was being prepped for testimony last night.
2008 was Hendry’s masterwork. The Harden deal, Edmonds, DeRosa, Dempster. Some really inspired moves. Still can’t believe that season ended how it did
http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/06/20/cubs-sign-undrafted-pitcher-matt-iannazzo/
Cubs sign an undrafted dude. After reading that, I realized that I think that;s what Boras was trying to do with Appel- get him to scare everyone off so that no one drafted him, essentially making him a FA who is not subject to spending limits. Am I misunderstanding the rules? Boras was attempting to get no one to draft him because teams lose the allocated money in this year’s budget, right?
i doubt it would be that easy nate.
@ Nate:
Not sure what the rules are regarding signing undrafted free agents, but I bet it’s mentioned in the CBA.
So is there a legitimate reason to have pine tar in your glove, or it’s just rampant cheating?
@ Nate:
pretty much everybody gets drafted, though. even high schoolers who make it clear they are going to college. the udfa are always bottom of the barrel.
@ josh:
I can’t imagine a single legit reason for a pitcher, especially an AL pitcher, to have it on his glove. At least a position player or a pitcher that hits could make the excuse that it’s just transfer from bat to batting glove to hand to mitt. Still a bit improbable, but possible. Not so for an AL pitcher.
@ GW:
More accurately, they are the dirt on the underside of the barrel
@ GW:
Yeah and this guy’s strikeout rate in college is pretty damn bad. And he’s 22 already. My guess is he’ll immediately be moved to relief and he’s always going to be old for his level. Even if Appel had gone undrafted in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd, someone would have taken him eventually. Maybe the 4th or 10th or 40th. Someone would have taken him.
@ josh:
More like wink and a nudge cheating
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I love the batting practice glove excuse. BP bats and gloves must be really different than the shit they use during the games. Makes you wonder why they would use them. (dying laughing)
@ Nate:
Undrafted free agents are subject to the same spending limitations as guys taken in rounds 11 through 40 – you’re fine up to $100k, but over that, it counts against your bonus pool.
As for UDFA’s not being worth anything, keep in mind, there are 10 fewer rounds now, and the spending limitations very well could cause some kids to slide right out of the Draft. I could see a few UDFA’s becoming relevant a few years from now.
@ mb21:
And why would he need to throw a doctored ball in batting practice? (dying laughing)
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Right, that makes sense. I’m trying to wrap my head around this. Seems like dude got caught doing something legitimately against the rules and was prohibited from pitching. That seems fair to me. Joe Maddon got really weird and mad about it and said Davey Johnson was basically an asshole. So did Davey violate an unwritten rule? Is that the issue?
@ Brett:
they would have to chop it to ~20 rounds for udfa to even be interesting, imo. baseball reference has a cool feature where you can choose a draft position and sort every player taken at that spot by war. spoiler: it gets bleak very quickly.
@ GW:
I know. And I’m not saying every UDFA matters. I’m saying only that a handful are going to be relevant (i.e., becoming a legitimate prospect at some point down the road – not an overwhelming hurdle).
@ Berselius:
Right, but you can’t complain if somehow the ump catches you, can you? I mean, it means you did it in a way that was visible, doesn’t it? What were the umps supposed to do?

I think he’s pissed that Johnson himself notified the ump, because Peralta used to pitch for Johnson. So Johnson knew Peralta cheated, and benefitted from said cheating, and when it was to his benefit to expose the cheating that Johnson himself once helped to conceal, he exposed it.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
AAAH! Actually, that does make sense. That’s the missing piece, for me.
This piece kind of lays out the complexities of the situation: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/post/joel-peralta-cheated-and-got-caught-so-why-is-joe-maddon-so-angry-at-davey-johnson/2012/06/20/gJQAVxIeqV_blog.html
The latest OBB makes me smile. Partly because a lot of Cubs fans are up in arms over Castro not being the second coming of Robin Yount.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
There may be an unspoken dimension too where it was a Nationals coach specifically who told him to start doing that.
@ GW:
Based on my own interest in the draft they’d have to chop it down to about 5 rounds. I lose interest after that because it ain’t pretty. Looking over the 2001-2006 drafts in the 6th round there’s only a handful of players who became relevant (Ryan Howard, Matt Kemp and a few others).
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I’d have done the same thing. You can cheat for me if you don’t get caught, but you never cheat against me. I completely understand that one. It’s about winning. Not about taking care of someone you once helped cheat. (dying laughing) Maddon is an idiot on this one.
Of those players who became relevant I’m guessing at least half of them dropped in the draft for one reason or another.
@ Rice Cube:
Yeah, and I’m not saying he can’t be rationally criticized, but I can’t believe the comments I see around of people who have, like, ‘given up’ on him or quit liking him for whatever reason. He’s a good player. Maybe someday he’s one of the best, but he’s good and likely will be good for a while.
@ mb21:
It would have been a good series to have someone tell Peralta to stay clean. That just seems like common sense.
@ mb21:
On the other hand, It’s not like Peralta is an ace out there. Isn’t he just a relief pitcher? It’s not exactly like a game-changing action.
D’Backs announcers on the free game are trying to drum up interest in the Cubs series by talking about how many fans the Cubs bring and how they “always play well” on the road (lie). Then they compared Castro to Ichiro (in that they don’t take walks, i.e., exciting).

Cue the booing of Castro.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Castro was way deep in the hole and Barney was out of position due to the shift. De Aza is fast as hell. There was no way he was getting an out on that play so if fans boo Castro they should be excommunicated.
@ Rice Cube:
If they excommunicated fans for acting stupid, there wouldn’t be many fans left.
@ Rice Cube:
Well, not even Campana would have beat out the liner that Soriano hit, but they booed him viciously for two days. I guess I’m getting a sense that Cub fans are about to turn on this team, a lá 2006 and 2009.

LARBUDDY LARBUDDY
If DeJesus and Castro weren’t so fucking lazy this game would be 3-2. When is this team going to stop turning home runs into doubles and triples?
@ Rice Cube:
I missed the first few innings, but apparently he had some shaky throws.
Enough of this, time for Futurama.
@ mb21:
Castro has more triples than homers. If that isn’t laziness, what is?
Man, it would have been awesome if Kenny Williams went through with making Konerko a player-manager
Well, look, you guys, we already won the series, what more do you want?
@ Berselius22:
He had a high throw to LaHair at first and a ball in the dirt to Barney, but they made it into the gloves so all was well.
@ SVB:
WORLD. SERIES.
Man, I really thought the Cubs were turning their season around with their last two games. I was starting to think about playing in October.
Yay for flying bats.
Pierzinsky just walked off the field with only 2 outs.
HE’S THE WORST BASEBALL PLAYER IN EXISTENCE!!!!!!
I see the Cubs are preparing for the building demand among contenders to acquire our players by auditioning our entire bullpen tonight, starting in the 1st inning.
MB, shouldn’t you do a trade value analysis of Marmol? He’s had like 3 saves in a row now, right?
@ josh:
If they fly, they do better at avoiding white nose syndrome, right?
@ SVB:
Only if they puncture Tyler Colvin’s lung.
They need sweet blood, you see….
@ josh:
I bet Mish can give us a thesis about their entire blood-sucking physiology….
i find it ironic that of 186 comments…the only one with enough thumbs up to get the green light…is the one on grammar…on a blog
I wonder if the Chicago media will make huge, 3-day long scandal and demand the benching of AJ Pierzynski…I won’t hold my fucking breath.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
I’m going to guess…… no.
If it’s any consolation, everyone already hates AJ anyway.
@ josh:
Well, other baseball players hate him. Most of the media here seem to like him.
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Maybe because the media is made up of assholes?
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
Just like Hawk. They belong together.
Either way, this is always good for a chuckle:
