Based on berselius’ post in the previous thread, a proper slogan for the 2013 Cubs might be:

“This season should’ve been a FanShot”

I’m also partial to one of this year’s alternate slogans: “Let’s just get this over with”

      @ Mercurial Outfielder:
Yeah. WAR is flawed, but let’s just throw it out and go back to batting average, RBI and singles with a man on 3rd and 2 outs. That’s basically what Dolan is saying and it’s fucking stupid. The flaws in WAR are almost entirely because of defense and Barney is an extreme example using DRS. It’s safe to say it’s wrong and/or adjust the DRS closer to 10, which is what UZR and FRAA have. It’s also absurd to think because one guy is a 4.6 WAR player that he’s suddenly worthy of being traded for a 4.5 WAR player. Dolan is just an idiiot. It’s the same shit Alvin has said about advanced stats over the years. Because it doesn’t work at times let’s just throw it out and go back to the days when we thought we knew something, but were really just idiots.

That goes back to Theo’s lens analogy. You have to compare the numbers with what coaches and scouts are telling you. You have to be aware of outliers and black swan events and all that.

False. Everyone knows that every singular data point in a model must conform to our perceptions. (dying laughing)

I find it’s also good practice to set my expectations clearly in mind, then interpret the data in a way favorable to my prediction, and to dismiss, explain away, or ignore data that make my prediction look wrong. You might be surprised at how far that’s gotten me in life

    25. 26 Nate says:

I’m almost convinced that the Cubs were going to trade Castro and perhaps Jackson to Arizona at the dealine for Justin Upton and 1 or 2 of those good pitching prospects, perhaps even Bauer at the deadline. I bet Castro gets traded this offseason. Barney clearly has the range for SS, and his bat has improved this year, adn I think the Cubs like him. He can man SS until Baez is ready in around 2 years.

    26. mb21 27 mb21 says:

      @ Nate:
Castro and Jackson plus another guy or two for Upton actually makes sense. I don’t know if I agree that’s what was going to happen, but I do think it’s a definite possibility. We know the cubs talked with some team about trading Castro and like you, I won’t be the least bit surprised if he’s traded this offseason.

      @ Steve Swisher:

The Cubs were on his no-trade list, but I think that was just a leverage tool, as a handful of other large market teams were there as well. I never heard any report of him not actually want to go to the Cubs.
