    Iowa

Brett Jackson was 1-3 with a double and is now batting .262. Josh Vitters was 2-3 with a walk and Rizzo went 1-3 with a walk of his own. Chris Volstad struck out 7 in 7 innings pitched while allowing 3 earned runs.

    Smokies

Logan Watinks was 2-4 with a pair of walks and also got a walkoff single to cap a comeback win for the Smokies. Jae Hoon Ha has been really hot as of late and went 3-5. BA has always seemed to like Ha and up till this year I could never figure out why as he never really did anything. I guess he could profile as a 4th OF? Dae Eun Rhee was terrible again failing to strike out a single batter while allowing 9 hits and 7 runs in 5 IP.

    Daytona

    PPD

    Peoria

Michael Jensen had a great start he worked 5 scoreless innings and struck out 7. Baez stole a base as well.

Zimmer signed for $.5 mil under slot:

Zimmer signed for a $3MM bonus, reports Jim Callis of Baseball America

I expect most will sign under slot. No reason for a team to offer slot anymore.

I guess it doesn’t matter because they aren’t the same players, but the Cubs could easily point to the two signed so far (Correa $2+ mil under and Zimmer $.5 mil under) as a point of negotation.

If a team doesn’t sign it’s first rounder, do they get that pick back next draft? Is there a threshold? Like Top 10 picks only or something?

Interesting article on BA stating that Soler went a different way to claim free agency: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2012/2613543.html

Due to federal regulations governing American companies and Cuban citizens, Soler’s agents must present either an unblocking license from the U.S. Office Of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) or two permanent residency documents from a new country before Soler can enter into agreement with a team. Soler’s agency, Praver Shapiro Sports Management, has told teams that Soler has the two permanent residency documents.

More Klaw: Pierce Johnson (Supp 1st round pick) and Josh Conway (4th round) would have been top 30 and top 50 talent before injury. Cubs hoping they’ll bounce back.

Teams know the pitcher has already gotten it out of the way, so they don’t have to pay for it (dying laughing)

I always assumed that the athletic department has a fund set up to avoid liability when minors get injured while playing sports during prescribed competition times. So that could probably subsidize whatever insurance the parents have for their kid.

I don’t think Boras has a conflict of interest as far as the draft is concerned. Eventually teams are going to realize it’s idiotic to go over slot. As a result the MLB draft is essentially a hard slot type of draft.

Unless the top player in the draft is considerably better than the next best player it makes no sense to go over slot for anyone. When you get into the 5th round and after it’s unlikely there’s a noticeable enough of a difference in talent to justify going over slot.

I thought about using them, but I wanted to talk to a place that’s local here that I drive by all the time. I really like their shirts and stuff, so I got a quote from them and it was way more reasonable than what Cafepress charged and I can drive over and approve it before they get mass produced.

Not really sure what the best way to go about it is. I wanted to gauge interest to see if it was worth just buying them with the assumption that they would sell, or take orders up front, or something. Hadn’t decided on a design yet. I’ll post some different possibilities and let people vote.
