It’s going to suck if the Cubs play the Nats in the postseason.

I would imagine the feeling is mutual. Both teams seem pretty even to me.

    dmick89,

Might as well call those games over after the eighth inning.

I dunno. Melancon is good, but it does feel like there’s a chance when he takes the mound.

I’ve never felt that way with Chapman, and until very recently, that was a bad feeling.

Arrieta looks solid. Would prefer more Ks by this point, but Seattle typically doesn’t K a whole bunch against RHP.

    Smokestack Lightning,

Yeah, Cubs have the edge there, Melancon is really good. Nats have a pretty big advantage in the rotation. They’d probably have the advantage 1 through 4.

I dunno. I would argue it’s closer than it appears at first glance. Arrieta and Lester are probably a step down from Stras/Scherzer, but Roark and Gio Gonzalez Lackey/Hendricks are a wash in my book.

Yeah, this is gotten out of hand. Would appreciate some measure of reality reasserting itself after the 7th inning stretch. Even Wade Miley has to know this is bullshit.

    Smokestack Lightning,

I’d take Roark/Gio over Lackey/Hendricks. I think the Cubs will need some short series magic to get past the Nationals. Anything can happen in a short series, but I think it so overwhelmingly favors the Nats. I also think the Nats will have home field advantage to make things worse.

I thought the Cubs were a lot better than the Mets last year and still do. We saw how that turned out so who knows?

Puts way too much pressure on Baez to do something.

Yep. And while he’s grown considerably as a hitter, I just don’t think he’s trustworthy enough yet to get the job done when the stakes are at their highest. Would rather have seen Zobrist take his hacks.

    dmick89,

He is a strikeout candidate, and therefore not ideal for this situation.

And you have a mediocre pitcher pitching way over his skis in his first real trouble of the game. And if there’s one thing that should be abundantly clear about one Wade Miley, is that he does not pitch better when there are baserunners.

Happy that got overturned, but still not pleased about the decision-making.

Yep. It can be really annoying when Cubs players TOOTBLAN, but forcing the issue can lead to big mistakes by the opposition. And when the team has only one hit, that’s a good time to take advantage of aggressiveness. (As long as it’s not the likes of Matt Albers on the mound.)

    Rizzo the Rat,

From the start. Unless it’s a no hitter or your bullpen needs a rest, no way should a starter be out there in the 8th of a 1 run game. Especially with the bullpen the cubs have.

Agreed. Jake had pitched a hell of a game. Consistency has been an issue all year. Rondon and Chapman should mean say goodnight. Why push it?

When did Joe stop trusting Rondon? And if he doesn’t trust Rondon, put Strop in the 8th inning. Arrieta 3rd time through the order in the 8th with a 1 run lead or Rondon? Or Strop? Either one is a better option and it’s not even close. At that point it’s probably anybody in the Cubs bullpen > Arrieta.

Rondon has a WHIP something like .75, walking something like 1 in 29 batters. He has just been sequenced to death. He has been arguably the best reliever in all of baseball. I don’t think Chapman should have been put in, particularly when his spot in the order was coming up.

Let’s say Chapman got the out. His spot was coming up in the bottom of the inning. That’s what I don’t get. Double switch if you need to in that case.

Actually, that part of the whole sequence of fuck-up bothers me the least, tho at some point Rondon has to be relied on to finish out an inning. But yeah, Chapman is a better bet to get all the outs over Rondon as he’s a better pitcher, especially against lefties. And if Joe hadn’t gone to Chapman there and Rondon had given up the hit… man. Full fan fucking meltdown would have ensued. So, at that point, he was in a damned if you do/don’t kind of spot.

But Cerulean is right about not double-switching. And dmick is spot-on about having Rondon out there to start the inning. Just a failure to think ahead of the moment.

I understand Joe’s wanting to spare the relief pitchers with the ace on the mound. I wish it were last year’s Cy Young Arrieta instead of this year’s version who loses the strike zone at least once a game.

If Matusz is any good, then I really want to see the Cubs deal some combination of Hammel, Strop, Matusz himself or even Wood (if he has any value) for assets to push for a #2/#3 with a long term contract.

I am a little bullish on Matusz because he’s from Baltimore. Come to think of it, maybe the Cubs should try to extend him before he becomes a Cy Young winner.

I completely understand bringing in Chapman to face the lefty. I just don’t get why Rondon wasn’t out there to start the 8th. This isn’t the Arrieta of the last 4 months of last season. I don’t know if the Cubs win if they make the right calls, but I’d rather they lose having made the optimal decisions and leaving Arrieta in to pitch the 8th was flat out stupid. You could probably even make the argument that Arrieta should have been pulled an inning earlier in favor of Strop. I wouldn’t have minded that decision. To give up half your farm system a few days earlier and then not take advantage of it just pisses me off.

Eh, maybe. I think it’s hard for people to believe Hector Rondon at zero pitches is a better pitcher for one inning than Jake Arrieta at 90, but it’s true.

That said, I mean, I figured Jake would pitch the 8th and he’d likely be okay, so I was only a little uneasy about it when the decision was made. The nuclear explosion that occurred reminded me why I should have been more upset about it at the time.

The Cubs have done a brilliant job of blowing a 12 game lead so they may as just skip all the starters in favor of whoever the hell they can call up from Iowa or Tennessee. Let’s see the youngsters!

Then again, I don’t last year felt like last year just yet either.

Gonna be pretty sad if, when this window closes in the future (far in the future, I hope), we look back and realize 2015 was the best shot we ever had and Theo should have gone all-in then.
