Tangotiger has his annual Fans Scouting Report survey published for this season and he needs our help. We watch more Cubs games than other team’s fans do so we’re better suited to fill it out. I’ve posted links to these surveys at ACB each of the last several years and hope with more readers that we can send even more people to complete the survey. That hypothetical pamphlet sounds a lot more fun than a Cubs pamphlet, honestly.
I just filled out the Tango survey for everyone except Montanez and LeMahieu (they barely got to play so I figured it wouldn’t be fair to rate them). The early tallies page shows that Darwin Barney is the best rated defender mostly because he’s “good” and folks have a very unfavorable opinion of Cubs legend Koyie Hill. Interesting that a lot of people think Tony Campana is “great” but that might be the scrappy/gritty/heart factor.
That’s true. Where would CHC be now if Baker and Dewitt were manning 3B? Not contending, for sure.

I know in past years the vote totals for the Cubs have skyrocketed after I’ve linked to it and then there aren’t any other Cubs sites that link it. I doubt many BCBers care to fill it out because that stuff is too obvious to them. (dying laughing)

For what it’s worth, it’s better to be great at something than shitty at everything like Soriano is anymore. Soriano’s only tool is power and in order to use him you have to accept that he’ll make an out at least 70% of the time. I might use Soriano against lefties, but other than that he’d never see the field if I was the manager. And even if he did face a lefty, he’d be taken out if the game was tied or the Cubs lead after 5 or 6 innings. It’s really hard to imagine how bad he’s gotten and how quickly it happened. It sucks.

Do you think he’s sign a 2 year deal? I have to think that since his oWAR is going to end up around 4 where it was in the 2006-2008 seasons. that would make it much easier for his agents to chalk up the decline in 2009-2010 to injury, but as he has clearly shown, he’s back.
Of course, teams will have to consider his age and propensity to get hurt, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that he could be projected at about 3, 2.5 and 2 WAR over the next 3 years, and net him somewhere around $35 million guaranteed.

It was the same thing with Sammy (or at least it seemed so), but we had less years to deal with it and the rest of the team was getting better.

If it’s just a pamphlet that familiarizes the players with the Cubs history and mentions some of the greats the team has had, that’s fine. I doubt the Cubs would be the first time to do something like that. Wouldn’t surprise me if all other teams do that, but if it’s instead trying to brainwash them then that’s pretty retarded.
It’s not that it’s going to make a difference in terms of production, but it’s cheap, easy and something players in the minor league organization should learn.

He had a 113 wRC+ so he was still 13% better than the league average hitter. He still had about a league average OBP, too. He was in decline, but he was worth 2.6 fWAR and 2.1 rWAR. Not worth his contract at that point, but still a valuable player. It sucks.[/quote]I think most of us recognized when the deal was signed that when his legs went, he was going to be bad. But I don;t think anyone anticipated how quickly that would happen.

Might be up to 3.0 now. I don’t know how many GMs will chalk up 2010 to injury though. If there’s one out there then they could value him as highly as 4 WAR next year.
I’d let him walk. It’s not that I don’t think he’d still be good, but I think the Cubs need to focus on signing players who can provide more value than their contract is worth. They at least need to do that for the next few years anyway.
