  • 2011 MLB Draft: Day Two ***updated***

Rounds 2 through 30 will begin today at 11 am central. The best players still available according to Baseball America rankings include Josh Bell who was the 15th ranked draft prospect.

From a talent basis, outfielder Josh Bell and lefthander Daniel Norris are both first-round talents. But their asking price ensured that they are the two highest-rated players left undrafted heading into the second day of the MLB Draft.

Bell (No. 15) and Norris (No. 16) both fell because of their perceived asking prices. Bell sent a letter to MLB teams telling him that he was planning to attend Texas and did not want to be drafted. Norris is a Clemson recruit.

The next best is Austin Hedges who also has a firm college committment (he’s ranked 28th). Here are the players in the top 50 still available:

    No. 15. Josh Bell, of

    No. 16. Daniel Norris, lhp

    No. 28. Austin Hedges, c

    No. 30 Andrew Susac, c

    No. 31 Dillon Howard, rhp

    No. 32 Matt Purke, lhp

    No. 39 Jorge Lopez, rhp

    No. 41 Josh Osich, lhp

    No. 42 Alex Dickerson, of

    No. 46 Dillon Maples, rhp

    No. 50 Tony Zych, rhp

    UPDATES BELOW

Cubs 2nd round pick: Dan Vogelbach, 1B (ranked 109th by BA)

Vogelbach hit 17 homers in 32 games and has some of the best lefthanded power in the draft due to excellent strength and a sound, loose swing. He put it on display last December at the annual Power Showcase—the event made famous by Bryce Harper’s 502-foot homer—by launching one 508 feet with a metal bat and won the event. He is more than a masher, with solid hitting ability and a fairly polished approach.

    I like it.

Dude can hit. Dude probably can’t run. At all. Still. I’m all for a power hitting 1st baseman. It’s been a long time since the Cubs had a legitimate 1st base prospect. You usually think about moving players to that position, which hasn’t exactly worked out for the Cubs.

3rd round: Ezekiel DeVoss (not ranked in top 200)

The Cubs took Shawon Dunston, Jr. in the 11th round. Here’s a short video.

That seems to be the Wilken strategy, except for that whole Hayden Simpson thing.

Nope. There was talk of that, but I think they’re humoring the Big 12 by helping them tread water until the next time. Texas has their network now, so it’ll be less of a sticking point in negotiations with the Pac 10.

I was hoping the Rays would have grabbed Norris – really, after the first 2 picks and I kinda like Goeddel, but the rest of them were very underwhelming, especially after the talk of sparing no expense on the draft. Wouldn’t mind them adding Hedges or Osich if they can, too.

They sold the fact that price tags wouldn’t dissuade them, though I think someone like Bell would still not be someone they’d pursue. Only one of their top picks falls out of the Top 200, and I know they have a strong scouting system, but I was expecting a slightly better haul. That said, they’ve added 10 new bodies and the second round hasn’t started. I’ll wait and see, thank you.

I’ve seen a little of Susac. From all accounts, he’s a guy who will definitely stick behind the plate. Seems like a nice player.

Two questions about him. Does anybody know the reason he’s draft eligible as a sophomore? Could this affect signability? Reason for slide in draft?

    24. 25 Mish says:

Mahtook was really good value at 31, as was Guerrieri at 24, so it’s not really as disappointing as I thought it was. There were a couble bats, like Cron, Nimmo, and Wong, that they had targeted who were off the board. I’m hoping they get a shot at Vogelbach, even if he doesn’t have a position. A lot of toolsy players, but would love that huge lumber.

    96. 98 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

SCOUTING PROFILE: Vogelbach is possibly the most-unique player in the 2011 high-school class, which has resulted in a wide variety of scouting opinions on his potential worth as a draft pick. Of course, some of the reasons for his uniqueness—perhaps upwards of 40 pounds of it—no longer exists, thanks to a strenuous off-season workout regimen that scouts say has noticeably transformed Vogelbach’s physique from the 288 pounds that he packed on his 6-foot frame at the East Coast Pro Showcase last August. No matter what his weight, Vogelbach may be the most-feared high-school hitter in the country. He hits balls hard as a matter of routine, and the newer, slighter model was hitting at a robust .479-14-41 clip through his first 25 games this spring for Bishop Verot High, a traditional baseball power in Fort Myers. Vogelbach is enormously strong, and along with his loose, easy wrists generates outstanding bat speed from the left side of the plate. Another factor that makes Vogelbach unique in the scouting community is that it is almost easier to break down his mental approach to hitting, rather than his physical approach, especially after granting him his raw strength and bat speed. The young man eats, sleeps and breathes swinging a bat, and is an exceptionally-confident hitter who doesn’t believe that any pitcher should ever get him out. Like oversized slugger Prince Fielder, Vogelbach is such a ferocious hitter that almost everyone in the park will stop and watch his at-bats. Scouts at East Coast Pro will remember the game when Vogelbach, already a rare 0-for-3 at the plate, hit a towering fly ball to right field that was caught on the warning track. Predictably, his teammates strained to the far edge of the dugout to watch Vogelbach’s massive drive, along with the subsequent wringing of his hands and contorting of his face in frustration as he ambled back to the dugout from rounding first base. A quarter-inch difference in contact and that ball would have travelled an easy 450 feet, but he wasn’t at all happy about his near-miss. As another burly lefthanded hitter from Florida, Vogelbach has understandably been compared to Fielder, the seventh overall pick in the 2002 draft. Yet as advanced as Vogelbach is presently, Fielder was stronger at the same age coming out of a Melbourne, Fla., high school, and hit the ball harder. Additionally, he was more athletic than Vogelbach is and had those unmistakeable major-league bloodlines. But the comparison to Fielder is a valid one—perhaps the most valid “Prince” comparison of the last decade. Any scout today, when asked about Vogelbach and the draft, automatically answers “American League,” before saying anything else, perhaps forgetting that Fielder himself is a National League all-star. The two teams that appear to have shown the most interest in Vogelbach, according to one veteran Florida scout, are the two teams that train in his back yard, Boston and Minnesota, while another scout firmly believes that Tampa Bay and its multitude of compensation-round drafts picks fits Vogelbach’s profile perfectly. Projected Draft Position: Compensation/Second Round –DAVID RAWNSLEY

    108. 110 jtsunami says:

Zych led the Cape Cod League with 12 saves last summer, when scouts voted him the circuit’s top prospect after he dealt 97 mph fastballs during the all-star game. After using him sporadically as a starter in his first two seasons, Louisville has kept him in the bullpen this spring and he has thrived. He has worked at 94-97 mph all season, with a high of 99. His fastball gets on hitters quickly thanks to some funk in his delivery. Zych’s arm action isn’t pretty and puts some stress on his shoulder, but it adds to his deception and doesn’t hamper his control. He’s an athletic 6-foot-3, 188-pounder whom the Cardinals recruited as a two-way player who could contribute in the middle infield, where he saw some action as a freshman. Zych has the mental toughness to handle late-inning assignments and shouldn’t require much time in the minors. Whether he becomes a closer or set-up man depends on how consistent his mid-80s slider becomes. He doesn’t miss as many bats as he should because his fastball can get straight and his slider can flatten out.

      Tony Zych – RHP – Louisville. 6’3″ 190.Last Drafted: Chicago Cubs – ’08 (46th Round).

Update: One of the harder throwers in the draft, Zych should move quickly and be one of the first 2011 draftees in the Majors to help someone’s pen.

Quick bit on Dan Vogelbach, the Cubs 2nd rounder–

Kid is from Ft. Myers Florida where a few of my roomates at college over the years have been from. Soon as I heard he was from Bishop Verot I knew who to call to get a little info on this kid.

You look at his scouting video and the very first thing that jumps out at you is his size– he’s at least 250 lbs. Apparently he’s just one of those kids who’s been big his whole life. But perhaps of greater significane is the fact that his Dad runs a elite training facility in Ft Myers, and that he’s from an athletic family–I hear his brother was an extremely accomplished D3 football player. My friends down there who are familiar with him say he’s a real good kid who comes from a nice family.

I like this pick. A little strange to see such a big guy, who’s already locked in at first get picked so early, but even in his video he looks like a surprisingly good athlete. Obviously, the idea is the Cubs are shootin’ for a slugger here, so here’s to hoping they were on the mark here.

The Cubs could send the $2 million buyout with him to another team. That’s all he’s getting next year anyway, contractually, so he might as well play for a contender. Maybe he knows no contender wants him so he’s saying he won’t leave. That is all I can figure.

I figured that’s about all and he’d rather just stick around rather than have to sell his house etc.

What’s the penalty for backing out of a college letter of intent? A few of the Cubs’ draft picks have commitments to college but I imagine they’d sign after being drafted. Probably not a big deal, but just wondering.

I understand other teams not wanting him, but I don’t really get why he wouldn’t want to move on. As recently as last year a subpar player named Juan Uribe negotiated a good postseason into a new contract. Aramis hasn’t hit for power but he has a decent AVG and OBP, so he’s not a crater right now.

    210. 216 Dr. Aneus Taint says:

Maples has had the benefit of professional insight. His father, Tim, was a second-round pick of the Orioles in 1979, and his pitching coach at Pinecrest is James Baldwin, the former White Sox all-star. Scouts got a good look at Maples during his junior season when they went to see Baldwin’s son, outfielder James Baldwin III, who signed with the Dodgers as a fourth-rounder. Maples’ best assets are athleticism and arm strength. Also a standout kicker on the football team, he stands at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds with a strong lower half. His fastball sits 91-94 mph and has touched the mid-90s throughout the season. His curveball is an above-average pitch that has left his competition in the state overmatched. He lacks command of his fastball and actually does a better job of spotting his curveball. He has shown a changeup in warm-ups but doesn’t need it in games, so the pitch will need development. Maples has a short arm action and questionable mechanics that lead to his below-average command. Scouts say his athleticism will allow him to make the necessary adjustments. He is committed to North Carolina, where he would play baseball and have a chance to walk on as a kicker for the football team.

I think CHC is going to make a legit run at this kid. Other than Vogelbach and Dunston, there aren’t really any major overslot guys. UNC is a tough place to poach kids from, though.

He could waive that if they worked a trade to the Yankees or something. He has to know he’s not getting that $16 million from the Cubs or anyone else next year. If he wanted to get the fuck out, he could make it happen (assuming somebody wanted him), but he says he’s not waiving anything to get out of town. I don’t get it.

I understand his right to stay and I get why a player would refuse to waive the no-trade, but Lee had to be persuaded to leave, Dempster has said he’s not going anywhere, and now Ramirez and Zambrano have said they want to remain Cubs. What the fuck? Why are these guys holding onto being a Cub like grim death?

    215. 221 mb21 says:

I don’t know, why. It’s definitely odd. I think Zambrano does get traded this year for what it’s worth. He’s clearly fed up with his own teammates and probably for good reason. He has a shitty defensive infield behind him. He regularly has to throw extra pitches because of them and Alfonso Soriano in LF. When he does pitch he’s one of the two best hitters in the lineup. I expect we’ll hear more about how he wants to stay. He’s got the fans on his side now for the first time in his career they’re really going to appreciate it when Z says he wants to remain a Cub. They’ll also understand this team has no chance and want the best for Z. I think he’s gone by August 1st.

If Ramirez wants to stay, that’s fine. The Cubs probably wouldn’t get anything for him anyway and he may even be untradeable. The Cubs can make things more difficult for him if they want by giving playing time to someone like DeWitt or LeF7. I understand why Demspter wants to stay (medical reasons for his daughter). I can appreciate that.

It’s very early. It doesn’t seem like it to us because we want the team to move on and start playing for the future, but the trade deadline is 8 weeks away. For the Cubs, it’s really the end of August. They don’t have any players under contract (long-term) that would be claimed when they pass them through waivers on August 1st or shortly after.
