Rounds 2 through 30 will begin today at 11 am central. The best players still available according to Baseball America rankings include Josh Bell who was the 15th ranked draft prospect.
From a talent basis, outfielder Josh Bell and lefthander Daniel Norris are both first-round talents. But their asking price ensured that they are the two highest-rated players left undrafted heading into the second day of the MLB Draft.
Bell (No. 15) and Norris (No. 16) both fell because of their perceived asking prices. Bell sent a letter to MLB teams telling him that he was planning to attend Texas and did not want to be drafted. Norris is a Clemson recruit.
The next best is Austin Hedges who also has a firm college committment (he’s ranked 28th). Here are the players in the top 50 still available:
No. 15. Josh Bell, of
No. 16. Daniel Norris, lhp
No. 28. Austin Hedges, c
No. 30 Andrew Susac, c
No. 31 Dillon Howard, rhp
No. 32 Matt Purke, lhp
No. 39 Jorge Lopez, rhp
No. 41 Josh Osich, lhp
No. 42 Alex Dickerson, of
No. 46 Dillon Maples, rhp
No. 50 Tony Zych, rhp
UPDATES BELOW
Cubs 2nd round pick: Dan Vogelbach, 1B (ranked 109th by BA)
Vogelbach hit 17 homers in 32 games and has some of the best lefthanded power in the draft due to excellent strength and a sound, loose swing. He put it on display last December at the annual Power Showcase—the event made famous by Bryce Harper’s 502-foot homer—by launching one 508 feet with a metal bat and won the event. He is more than a masher, with solid hitting ability and a fairly polished approach.
I like it.
Dude can hit. Dude probably can’t run. At all. Still. I’m all for a power hitting 1st baseman. It’s been a long time since the Cubs had a legitimate 1st base prospect. You usually think about moving players to that position, which hasn’t exactly worked out for the Cubs.
3rd round: Ezekiel DeVoss (not ranked in top 200)
The Cubs took Shawon Dunston, Jr. in the 11th round. Here’s a short video.

Do you think they take a pitcher? Or would they be better to get a catcher and just convert him later if necessary?

So the Big 12 lost two teams (Colorado, Nebraska) but I thought they grabbed a couple teams from some other conference?
I can’t wait to hear the standing ovation Z gets in his next start.
I hope we go pitcher heavy the next couple rounds and go over slot 1-2 times.
Do you think they take a pitcher? Or would they be better to get a catcher and just convert him later if necessary?
I’d take the best player available. It doesn’t sound like Bell, Norris and Hedges area actually available though. The next guy is coming off a significant injury. It would be nice if Purke dropped, but I doubt it.

That seems to be the Wilken strategy, except for that whole Hayden Simpson thing.
So the Big 12 lost two teams (Colorado, Nebraska) but I thought they grabbed a couple teams from some other conference?
Nope. There was talk of that, but I think they’re humoring the Big 12 by helping them tread water until the next time. Texas has their network now, so it’ll be less of a sticking point in negotiations with the Pac 10.

Norris and Hedges are more available than Bell.
I think JG wants to draft Josh Bell.
no idea why but I think Tilson is a Cub by end of the day. Just keep reading he’s toolsy and he’ll be cost-effective while also off the radar. I’m actually surprised he wasn’t drafted 9th.
I think JG wants

I think Ryno wants him to go to Texas where he is committed.

I was hoping the Rays would have grabbed Norris – really, after the first 2 picks and I kinda like Goeddel, but the rest of them were very underwhelming, especially after the talk of sparing no expense on the draft. Wouldn’t mind them adding Hedges or Osich if they can, too.

Maybe the Rays didn’t want to overpay Norris?
They sold the fact that price tags wouldn’t dissuade them, though I think someone like Bell would still not be someone they’d pursue. Only one of their top picks falls out of the Top 200, and I know they have a strong scouting system, but I was expecting a slightly better haul. That said, they’ve added 10 new bodies and the second round hasn’t started. I’ll wait and see, thank you.

Don’t you like anything?
I’ve seen a little of Susac. From all accounts, he’s a guy who will definitely stick behind the plate. Seems like a nice player.
Two questions about him. Does anybody know the reason he’s draft eligible as a sophomore? Could this affect signability? Reason for slide in draft?
Mahtook was really good value at 31, as was Guerrieri at 24, so it’s not really as disappointing as I thought it was. There were a couble bats, like Cron, Nimmo, and Wong, that they had targeted who were off the board. I’m hoping they get a shot at Vogelbach, even if he doesn’t have a position. A lot of toolsy players, but would love that huge lumber.

You really are a Raysfag.
Susac is coming off a broken hamate bone. Some players are eligible for the draft as a sophomore (I think it’s based on age, but I can’t remember for sure).
Dave Pinto with a more contrarian take on Bryce Harper’s “kiss” – http://baseballmusings.com/?p=69694/quoteWhy do people even care?

also, there’s never a shot of the pitcher or other position players in that video. Who knows what kind of shit talking was going on.
At least Bryce Harper didn’t run across the mound.
Josh Bell eh? I thought comp picks for non-signees only happened in the first round. How many rounds do comp picks go for that situation?
Josh Bell —> PIT That would be about the fifth player they’ve tried to poach from Texas in two years.

Wow. Vogelbach.
I like the pick for CHC, but I’m surprised they went that route.
Vogelbach….hmmm.

Yeah. Do the Cubs even have any 1B prospects? Or is it pretty much Young Prospect Bryan LaHair (dying laughing)
Micah Hoffpauir and Jake Fox were Cubs 1B prospects* I’ve recently enjoyed.
*not really prospects, but I need the nomenclature
I don’t mind the Cubs taking a lefty power hitter. The cubs haven’t had a good one of those around Wrigley for awhile since Henry Rodriguez (not including Pena and his one year deal).
Jake Fox was a catching prospect.
Eat shit (dying laughing)
Tilson went to STL
White Sox had major conference call issues, but took a Cal pitcher. Sweet.

If Vogelbach is committed to getting into shape he could be a pretty decent bat. Would really like to hear what the Cubs have to say about this guy because he doesn’t fit the Wilkens profile.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ulw6sJqW03A#t=03m35s
The hitting display starts at 3:35, but they show some drills of him “running” and fielding earlier as well.

Quick bit on Dan Vogelbach, the Cubs 2nd rounder–
Kid is from Ft. Myers Florida where a few of my roomates at college over the years have been from. Soon as I heard he was from Bishop Verot I knew who to call to get a little info on this kid.
You look at his scouting video and the very first thing that jumps out at you is his size– he’s at least 250 lbs. Apparently he’s just one of those kids who’s been big his whole life. But perhaps of greater significane is the fact that his Dad runs a elite training facility in Ft Myers, and that he’s from an athletic family–I hear his brother was an extremely accomplished D3 football player. My friends down there who are familiar with him say he’s a real good kid who comes from a nice family.
I like this pick. A little strange to see such a big guy, who’s already locked in at first get picked so early, but even in his video he looks like a surprisingly good athlete. Obviously, the idea is the Cubs are shootin’ for a slugger here, so here’s to hoping they were on the mark here.
Osich. Maples.

Blocked at work. Will come back to WeverTF that is.
Wait, so is Andrew Clark actually Paul Sullivan? And Rice Cube keeps emailing him (in Paul’s mind) stupid questions that we would be (dying laughing) at?
What about Brian Johnson and Allison Reynolds?

Is there any reason why he would waive the NTC? I mean, he’s sucking it up, knows that he has a guaranteed $2MM in the bank, and it’s very likely no one will pick up the 2012 option either…I’m not sure how it works contract-wise but I don’t see him going to a contender in a trade.

Why in the fuck do all these guys want to stick around? It can’t be fun anymore. The facilities suck, the fans boo you at the drop of a hat, the media hates you if you’re not a scrappy white guy, and the team may not win another game the rest of the year. Why do they all want to stay?

The Cubs could send the $2 million buyout with him to another team. That’s all he’s getting next year anyway, contractually, so he might as well play for a contender. Maybe he knows no contender wants him so he’s saying he won’t leave. That is all I can figure.

I figured that’s about all and he’d rather just stick around rather than have to sell his house etc.
What’s the penalty for backing out of a college letter of intent? A few of the Cubs’ draft picks have commitments to college but I imagine they’d sign after being drafted. Probably not a big deal, but just wondering.

I understand other teams not wanting him, but I don’t really get why he wouldn’t want to move on. As recently as last year a subpar player named Juan Uribe negotiated a good postseason into a new contract. Aramis hasn’t hit for power but he has a decent AVG and OBP, so he’s not a crater right now.

How sad that we don’t get paid for it like certain celebrities.
Is it really uncommon for agents to say their client won’t accept a trade at this point? Maybe it is. I doubt Ramirez would be traded because that $16 million next year becomes guaranteed if he is traded. No way any team takes him.
Dillon Maples was on the list above.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2011/03/game-report-dillon-maples/
interesting…hope they throw a bonus at him
I think CHC is going to make a legit run at this kid. Other than Vogelbach and Dunston, there aren’t really any major overslot guys. UNC is a tough place to poach kids from, though.
If CHC lands Baez, Vogelbach, Dunston and Maples, that’s a good class.

He could waive that if they worked a trade to the Yankees or something. He has to know he’s not getting that $16 million from the Cubs or anyone else next year. If he wanted to get the fuck out, he could make it happen (assuming somebody wanted him), but he says he’s not waiving anything to get out of town. I don’t get it.
I understand his right to stay and I get why a player would refuse to waive the no-trade, but Lee had to be persuaded to leave, Dempster has said he’s not going anywhere, and now Ramirez and Zambrano have said they want to remain Cubs. What the fuck? Why are these guys holding onto being a Cub like grim death?
Did the Angels make an illegal pick or something?
http://fayobserver.com/articles/2011/06/06/1098890?sac=Sports
Apparently the Maples family has informed teams what it’ll take to sign. He’ll be a draft-eligible sophomore, so he has some leverage.

Agreed. Not bad, all things considered. Hell, all things considered, the Cubs did awesome.
I don’t know, why. It’s definitely odd. I think Zambrano does get traded this year for what it’s worth. He’s clearly fed up with his own teammates and probably for good reason. He has a shitty defensive infield behind him. He regularly has to throw extra pitches because of them and Alfonso Soriano in LF. When he does pitch he’s one of the two best hitters in the lineup. I expect we’ll hear more about how he wants to stay. He’s got the fans on his side now for the first time in his career they’re really going to appreciate it when Z says he wants to remain a Cub. They’ll also understand this team has no chance and want the best for Z. I think he’s gone by August 1st.
If Ramirez wants to stay, that’s fine. The Cubs probably wouldn’t get anything for him anyway and he may even be untradeable. The Cubs can make things more difficult for him if they want by giving playing time to someone like DeWitt or LeF7. I understand why Demspter wants to stay (medical reasons for his daughter). I can appreciate that.

I’m sure this is more like Sonny Gray a few years ago though. Doubt the Cubs have any interest in offering more than slot and that obviously won’t get it done. If the Cubs want Maples, it probably requires a larger signing bonus than any player they drafted.
Sure, on an individual level, it makes sense. But all of these guys seem willing to just sink with the ship. At their ages, you’d think at least one guy would be like, “fuck you guys, I’m going to a team with a heartbeat.”

He is unmovable, no way he comes out and says he wants out of town knowing there is no way in hell anyone trades for him. That will just make these beat writers on his ass day in, day out. I don’t understand the logic of saying that he won’t waive his NTC though, at least this early.
I wonder what the repercussions of just DFA’ing him are. Ramirez plays like he would rather be doing anything else.
I wonder what the repercussions of just DFA’ing him are. Ramirez plays like he would rather be doing anything else.
Doesn’t a DFA kick in the 2012 option automatically? Perhaps I didn’t understand the contract correctly though…
http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-cubs_112114177768677294.html
DFA not specified so I guess that is an option.

I don’t think it happens very often. I would assume anything we hear right now from the player and/or agent is just an attempt to gain leverage.
I wonder what the repercussions of just DFA’ing him are. Ramirez plays like he would rather be doing anything else.
If they DFA him they aren’t on the hook for anything other than the buyout and any team could sign him without his contract being guaranteed next season.

It’s very early. It doesn’t seem like it to us because we want the team to move on and start playing for the future, but the trade deadline is 8 weeks away. For the Cubs, it’s really the end of August. They don’t have any players under contract (long-term) that would be claimed when they pass them through waivers on August 1st or shortly after.
424, I think part of the reason the Cubs players are saying the things they do is because they know they’re going to get crucified if they say anything other than how much they want to be a Cub for the rest of their lives.
How you like me meow?
Rockies’ pick was spelled “Meaux” but they kept saying “meow” and there were cackles on the conference call (dying laughing)
