Lollygagging Chicago Cubs (56-71) vs. Fun-Having Atlanta Braves (76-52)

In Series Previews by aisle424Leave a Comment

Bobby Valentine doesn’t think much of the Cubs, particularly Starlin Castro.  He must have just watched bull Durham or something.

Bobby would definitely support the Cubs’ strict “no dinners” policy, so I fully expect to see him named to be the next manager as long as the Cubs include an expense acount for his disguises.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are going with a non-Starlin lineup for at least the first game. So you may as well try your hand at making money on internet casino by placing your bet on the toughest team, which certainly won’t be the Cubs.  I haven’t seen a statement from Quade or anyone from the Cubs, but Starlin is not in the starting lineup.  I’m assuming his sunflower seeds have also been confiscated.

Jair Jurrjens vs. Ryan Dempster

Jurrjens hasn’t been great lately, but he still sports an overall 2.84 ERA so he’s doing something right.  Dempster, on the other hand, has been more good than bad lately and gotten his ERA down to 4.61, which is a heck of an accomplishment considering his start.  This a game the Cubs need to win if they have delusions of even splitting this series.

Mike Minor vs. Casey Coleman

Mike Minor’s stock as a pitching prospect has fallen, but he’s still better than Casey Coleman. Mike Minor, and to a lesser extent Coleman, are examples of how risky an MLB Draft pick can be much like playing at one of the US casinos. However, the return on your investment if the pick works out will be worth more than your initial investment.

Derek Lowe vs. Randy Wells

The battle of pitchers disappointing the hell out of their fans.  I’d rather be in the position where I’m being disappointed by Derek Lowe’s season, but whatever.

Brandon Beachy vs. Matt Garza

Of course, this is the most intriguing match-up of the series and I’ll be at work.  This is also a must-win for the Cubs if winning or tying this series is at all plausible.  Garza is the unquestionable ace of the Cubs’ staff stuff-wise, and actually came up with a win in his last start as a cherry on top of another outstanding performance.  I don’t know a ton about Beachy, but my fantasy team has benefitted from his consistency this year.

I think the Cubs will get one game, but only because it is so difficult to sweep a four game series.

Chicago fans love to believe that the reasons their team fails boil down to character flaws in the players, and this sort of thing plays into that prevailing stupidity. The Cubs are bad because they built a roster worth about 75 wins, not because of any personal failing of any player(s). But Sullivan loves to beat this drum, and especially about the Latino players. They’re lazy and cancerous. That’s the Paul Sullivan mantra.

Yes, Sullivan and many of the other talentless hacks in the Chicago media and blogosphere like pretending this team is awful because of the inherent character flaws of many of its players. I disagree strongly with that notion and think it is dangerous and even rather racist.

However, I don’t believe in this circumstance it’s very unreasonable to think that Castro was benched because he was very publicly caught not paying the least bit of attention to the baseball game he was playing in and criticized for it on national television vociferously by a respected (albeit stupid) baseball personality. Obviously they shouldn’t play it off as fact but I hardly think it is a serious logical jump.

Bobby V apparently went way too far and made way too big a deal of it, but what Castro did is pretty bad. If Castro was given the day off today because of that and if Bobby V hadn’t made such a big deal out of it, I don’t think any of us would notice. I guess I can understand giving him the day off after something like that. Quade already stuck up for him so I’m good with it if it’s a punishment in some way.

It’s really too bad that Quade opens his mouth too much, leaves the starters in too long and all that because I actually like how he’s handled himself otherwise.

Don’t give the dipshits a story and let them look like assholes harping on a problem that has already been addressed. The best thing the team can do is just conduct their own business and let the media do what it wants, which is be stupid.

Obviously everyone wants Quade to have charged out of the dugout in the middle of the inning and grabbed Castro by the ear and dragged him into the dugout.

They look back at Billy Martin yanking Reggie in the middle of the inning or Bobby Cox yanking Andruw Jones and think that is how every lapse in judgement or focus should be addressed. Castro was wrong, but there is no need to publicly humiliate the guy just to show that SOMETHING was done. I don’t know why people assume that because it doesn’t happen on television in front of everyone that nothing was ever done or said.

I think most of it comes from the fact that their favorite players are being paid to do a job that amounts to a child’s game, and so there’s a lot of jealousy and resentment that goes into it.

Now I’m going to blow a gasket on this one here. This reeks of complete stupidity by the Cubs manager and just lends justification to the fact that he is not a good Manager. If Bobby Valentine hadn’t said anything, we are not having this conversation. What does this say for the Cubs manager and coaches? Says they are buffoons because they let the broadcaster dictate how his team is ran. Then Quade has the stones to say,”maybe I need to call Bobby and see what he saw!” Are you effing kidding me? Please get this joke of a manager out the door, he has no clue and no business being in that position. He should be totally embarrassed as a field boss to have to rely on the broadcaster to tell him what’s going on with his players on the field. His coaches should be canned as well because they are supposed to be the extra eyes watching what’s going on out on the field. I’m not saying Castro was right, but how can you discipline a player for something you didn’t see yourself as the manager? Quade has beat this kids ass all year and it’s not getting through, so that tells me that the staff has no control of the players and how they go about their daily business. Time to bring in either Brenly or Sandberg. Brenly definitely will not put up with that crap

Only comment so far. I think if Bobby V hadn’t said anything, Q would still have given Castro the day off and been able to brush it off as just another day off.

I am fine with that part. I’m annoyed with the pinch-hitter part. If you’re going to bunt, bunt with one of your starters who knows how to get one down. Don’t waste your backup catcher. And even if the bunt is taken off, you’re still down two strikes that you could’ve been more productive with. Yeesh.

Money quote on a topic that’s been discussed extensively on this blog:

Basketball teams, of course, look like businesses. They have employees and customers and offices and a product, and they tend to be owned, in the manner of most American businesses, by rich white men. But scratch the surface and the similarities disappear. Pro sports teams don’t operate in a free market, the way real businesses do. Their employees are 25 years old and make millions of dollars a year. Their customers are obsessively loyal and emotionally engaged in their fortunes to the point that — were the business in question, say, discount retailing or lawn products — it would be considered psychologically unhealthy. They get to control their labor through the draft in a way that would be the envy of other private sector owners, at least since the Civil War. And they are treated by governments with unmatched generosity. Congress gives professional baseball an antitrust exemption. Since 2000, there have been eight basketball stadiums either built or renovated for NBA teams at a cost of $2 billion — and $1.75 billion of that came from public funds. And did you know that under the federal tax code the NFL is classified as a nonprofit organization? Big genial Roger Goodell, he of the almost $4 billion in television contracts, makes like he’s the United Way.

It’s a tradeoff. You can try to put Campana in, but he’s only one run scored. If they don’t score, and they don’t keep Campana in the game, you lose the speedster, you lose Rami’s bat, and you also have Jeff Baker at 3B for possibly better defense but probably not the same bat. I think it was too early to try the pinch-run idea and I doubt Q would do it anyway.

If we do that, we’ve decided to evaluate Reed Johnson at his worst rather that somewhere in between his worst and best. He’s obviously not going to have a .406 wOBA, but if he was paid to hit that well he’d be getting $20 milion per year over at least 5 years. I’m just trying to say that his salary this year is more indicative of what mlb GMs are likely to value him as. He’s having a good year which should net him more than that, but not much more.

The Cubs signed him for $3m in 2009, following his 1.6 WAR 2008 season, then his next two contracts were 800k and 900k. Like Nady he does have one decent season under his belt as a regular (2006), but that was a while ago.

The Cubs signed him for $3m in 2009, following his 1.6 WAR 2008 season, then his next two contracts were 800k and 900k. Like Nady he does have one decent season under his belt as a regular (2006), but that was a while ago.[/quote]Pretty sure that was arbitration in 2009, b.

Yeah, his 2009 contract was his 3rd year of arbitration and it included incentives. Johnson was injured much of the season and wasn’t good when he played.

It doesn’t really matter. It’s not like I think he’s going to get a lot more than $3 million, but I do think some team will offer a bit more. I also think if the Cubs offer something decent he’ll stick around. Depending on what direction the Cubs go, I could see the Cubs re-signing him for $2.5 to $3 million.

    Rogers:

I’d say it’s better than 50-50, maybe even 75-25, that Sandberg is the new manager. And, by the way, that would have also been the case had Tom Rickettsbeen willing to change his organizational structure to create a spot between him and the GM for Pat Gillick.

Gillick, now a special advisor to Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr., vetted Sandberg before the Phillies hired him to manage Triple-A Lehigh Valley last November. He came away highly impressed in the work that Sandberg had done in his four seasons as a minor-league manager with the Cubs, and his handling of players like John Mayberry Jr., Vance Worley, Domonic Brown (he’s improved his strikeout-walk ratio, if little else) and Phillippe Aumont has added to Gillick’s level of respect. Ditto the attention-to-detail approach that has contributed to the IronPigs’ 73-57 record.

While making the rounds in the clubhouse before Saturday’s game, first-round draft pick Javier Baez was asked what he knew about the Cubs.

    “Nothing,” he replied.

That soon may be resolved. Chairman Tom Ricketts said Friday the team is giving new prospects a book recounting Cubs’ history in an effort to change the “culture.”

“I see a lot of things we can do to reinforce the consistency of a Cubs’ message, from Day One until they get to Wrigley Field,” Ricketts said. “One of the things we did this year was to create a little book on Cubs history because we realize most of the young men we drafted don’t know anything about the Cubs except they hadn’t won the World Series in a while.

“We wanted to reinforce the pride and the tradition and the respect they should have, and how fortunate they should be to be in the Cubs organization.”

A rib roast would basically be prime rib, but you’d do it backward. smoke it at 300 degrees or so for probably about 90 minutes and then put a quick sear at the end.

Doing a filet would be a lot like doing poultry. It would be more about the flavor than the cooking, though I bet you could smoke it to rare at 350 or so and then finish it in a castiron skillet to medium rare.

You could probably even find a friend or two who say that’s where he’d like to go, but it’s less likely than him signing elsewhere. Maybe Pujols just likes Kansas City.
