JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-5-13

In Minor Leagues by myles43 Comments

Iowa Cubs 5 @ Tacoma Rainiers 6

8 runs were scored in the first 2 innings. Mike Olt went 0-4 with no walks or strikeouts.

Justin Grimm was pretty poor early on, allowing 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Afterwards, he settled down and didn't allow another run. He ended with a 6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO line, which is acceptable given how he got there. Casey Coleman took the loss with a run allowed in 2.1 innings. A 9th-inning jack by Brandon Bantz ended it.

Tennessee Smokies 4 @ Jacksonville Suns 6

Javier Baez went 2-4 with a walk and a double and 2 strikeouts, and stole his 4th base also. Arismendy Alcantara was benched, but struck out in one pinch hit. Christian Villanueva doubled. Brett Jackson struck out thrice. John Andreoli was 3-4 with a double.

Matt Loosen struggled again for Tennessee, allowing 5 and 3. Hunter Cervenka pitched 2 scoreless, and Dayan Diaz went 1.2 innings and allowed a run. Tony Zych cleaned it up with 1.1 scoreless innings.

Kane County Cougars 4 @ Clinton LumberKings 12

Albert Almora is dinged up and had the day off. I'm not sure why Dan Vogelbach didn't play, but he didn't. As a result, this was a relative snoozefest. Gioskar Amaya had a day to forget, going 0-5 with a strikeout and an error. Jeimer Candelario batted cleanup and had a solo shot. Rock Shoulders went 0-3 with walk and a run. Carlos Escobar doubled.

Felix Pena was really bad, allowing an octet of runs pitching a sextet of innings. He allowed 2 HR, 10 H, and walked 2. Nathan Dorris was even worse, allowing 4 runs in 2 innings.

DSL Cubs 12 @ DSL Mets1 (7.5 innings)
VSL Mariners 9 @ VSL Cubs 8

Brohiglyn Rivero STILL has an ERA of 30.24. He's pitched 8.1 innings and allowed 28 RUNS.

AZL Indians 3 @ AZL Cubs 4

Bonus baby Tyler Alamo (24th round, 2013 draft) went 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout. He also had a passed ball and a throwing error, so a rough day for him. Like Bryant, he's new to pro baseball, so give it some time.

Gerardo Motherfucking Concepcion threw in this game. He went 1.2 IP and allowed no hits, but he did allow an unearned run on the "strength" of 4 walks and a strikeout.

I think the protected pick this offseason will also be a big incentive for the FO to get a good FA. Even if they plan to content in 2015, you gotta get the players when they’re available. This FO values draft picks too much to give them up in the 1st round if not protected.
Also, I’m going to the Cubs game tonight assuming its not raining here in Philly.

    Sorry, man. That’s rough.

This counts as progress for Concepcion.

the one year I played HS football, we didn’t have an offensive squad and a defensive squad. Well, we did, but it was all the same people.

I don’t know what it says about me and my presumptions that I thought both Donnie Murphy and Logan Watkins were black. Huh.

I don’t see race. People tell me I’m white because I shop at Whole Foods.

Donnie Murphy has played 245 games for 4 professional ball clubs. His career fWAR is -0.3, with the min being -0.9 and the max being 0.8 Hell EJax had three seasons where he was actually very good.

    Sano at AA: 41 G, .230/.344/.533, 10 HR, 7 2B, 2 3B, 0 SB
    Baez at AA: 29 G, .274/.333/.612, 11 HR, 8 2B, 0 3B, 5 SB

Mostly just holy shit Baez has him by 80 points of slugging.

Obviously Baez’s MLB clock is not going to start this year, but I would think about putting him at AAA by Sept. Almora needs to get to AA by then too. I think Almora is a useful MLB regular before anyone else in the org. Certainly seems like he can learn on the job at MLB like Castro at 20 or 21. Especially since the defense is apparently high quality already.

As far as budgeting next year goes, best value has to be signing a mid-rotation arm and two bullpen arms. Probably a closer, even though that sounds like bad money. I just don’t think there’s anyone in house that can fill that role. WAR would disagree, but does anyone here think that Kimbrel is worth less 5+ wins over Marmol? I’m not going to look at WPA numbers, but I guess those show more of a disparity.

EDIT: I didn’t mean to say the Cubs would add Kimbrel, just that WAR understates the difference between a stable closer and a bad one.

Best case scenario for Baez is that he’s starts next year on a tear, the Cubs are at .500 or above come June 1st and he gets a call up.

Baez’s two doubles last night: right center and right field line. Also his HR on 8/1 was to right center. Shows what we already heard from the Smokies hitting coach that they are working with Baez on going oppo.

A few FA signings I’d really like this offseason that I don’t think are out of the realm of possibility for about 35 million committed next year depending on how the contracts are made:

McCann (4 years/17M per?)- I think he’s a bona fide slugger at a position with not much coming up the shoot, and teams probably won’t commit more than 4 years on him. Let Beef be a very good backup and we’d have an excellent catching corps for a while.

Utley (2/12M per?)- Phillies may extend him but I think his injury history will undervalue him. Since the Cubs should have Alcantara in AAA, a midseason injury to Utley could open a spot for Alcantara. I kinda doubt Utley gets 3 years though wouldn’t surprise me, but rather an expensive 2 year contract which seems perfect for the cubs. Also fills the black hole offensively at 2nd, I like Barney but unless he hits up the biogenesis clinic, his glove simply doesnt justify starting his bat. Not sure what to do with him besides a backup IF that you won’t use to pinch hit

Jeff Baker (1/2M)- I don’t know if we can get him but he is just the perfect fit for our team right now. Platoons for whatever reason never work out but if he were the short end of one with Schierholtz, dejesus or all of the above it just seems like a perfect situation

A good relief pitcher (2/5M per)- I’m not sure who this is but I think it would be a good idea to spend some money on the pen. It seems teams in general don’t value relievers as much as they once did and I think it would be a good time to capitalize on that. Obviously not for too much money/years

Instead of Utley I wouldnt mind Beltran or another OF If they think Watkins is a starter at 2B.

    A lineup of

    C: McCann
    1B: Rizzo
    2B: Utley
    SS: Castro
    3B: Olt
    LF: Lake
    CF: Dejesus
    RF: Schierholtz
    Bench: Valbuena
    Bench: Watkins
    Bench: Baker
    Bench: Castillo
    Bench: Ha

I’m not sure I love that for our position players, but I think I like it as a bridge to Alcantara and Baez who seem like the next group of prospects to come up.
