JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 8-21-13

In Minor Leagues by myles28 Comments

Memphis Redbirds 7 @ Iowa Cubs 1

Mike Olt went 0-2 with a walk.

Yoanner Negrin was pretty awesome, allowing 1 run in 5 innings. He walked 1 and allowed 4 hits. Alberto Cabrera did a Lendy Castillo impression, as did Jeffry Antigua. Marcus Hatley went scoreless.

Javier Baez and the Superfriends 10 @ Birmingham Barons 8

Javier Baez is a bad mother fucker. He went 4-4 with 2 HR and a SF and 5 RBI. Jesus Christ he's good this year.

Daytona: .274/.338/.535 (.873 OPS, 17 HR)
Tennessee: .307/.366/.659 (1.025 OPS, 16 HR)

He hits a HR in every 11 at bats in the Southern League. If he had 700 AB in a season, that's 63 HR. Over his last 10, he's hitting .432/.488/.919. His slugging percentage over the last 10 games is higher than the OPS of anyone on the Cubs…except Donnie Murphy, of course.

Arismendy Alcantara doubled, singled, and walked twice. Pretty good, but he's no Javier Baez. 4 other people also doubled; Matt Szczur, Christian Villanueva, Brett Jackson (2-5!), and Rafael Lopez. They're no Javier Baez put together.

Boring pitchers alert! Boring pitchers alert!

Beloit Snappers 8 @ Kane County Cougars 5 (10 innings)

Jeimer Candelario went 2-5, but Marco Hernandez doubled and singled instead of 2 singles and Giuseppe Papaccio tripled and singled. Whoo! He also had 3 RBI. Rock Shoulders had a pair of walks.

James Pugliese allowed 5 in 5 off of 10 hits. He did fan 6. Nathan Dorris pitched 4 scoreless. Awesome! Michael Hamann allowed a 3-run HR to lose the game in extras.

Boise Hawks 5 @ Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2

Yasiel Balaguert singled twice, as did Danny Lockhart and Lance Rymel. No extra base hits in this one, and only one walk from David Bote

Jose Rosario had the start and went 5 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 2 walks and 5 hits. Jose Arias went 3.2 scoreless innings; he hasn't allowed a run yet at this level. Eddie Orozco struck out the only batter he faced.

i am probably in the minority but he should get a september call up. He has earned it. It sends a good message to the rest of the farm IMO

Baez is 5th in HR in the Southern League. Crazy.

    @ bubblesdachimp:
why start his service time now when you can wait? I generally hate that argument, but only at the beginning of the season. The Cubs already don’t have a lot of space on their 40-man and Baez isn’t on it.

My thinking is it seems he struggles adjusting to new levels. It might be nice for him to get that out of the way and have a legit shot at breaking camp with the team. Also the kid is probably ready. The cubs are a big market team we shouldnt have to worry about small market issues. He has earned a look in September. I think it sends a very strong message to the other big guys that when you work your ass off and produce we are going to promote you. Also he will be on the 40 soon enough anyways.

Is anyone else confused by Dale Sveum’s lineups? I can halfway understand Castro in the leadoff spot. Prior to this year, he was pretty good. Darwin Barney 2nd? Rizzo 2nd? I don’t understand. I know the Cubs aren’t exactly flush with talent up and down the order, but surely there is a more effective lineup for him.

    castro:

“Most of it came down to obviously thinking about Castro the last couple days,” Sveum said late this afternoon. “I don’t think we’re doing him any good trying to get through these next five weeks trying to get him and Rizzo feeling good going into the winter. Of all places, now that we’ve lost (David) DeJesus in the leadoff spot anyway, I think this is one spot that he’s flourished in and he kind of can use to get his so-called swagger back and see if that can get things going a little bit, too.

    rizzo:

Rizzo, it’s putting him somewhere that he doesn’t even have to think about it, being ‘the guy’ or whatever. You can put him in the 2-hole and make sure he gets up in the first inning without being feeling like, right now, taking a little pressure off as far as being the guy in the third hole or the fourth hole or the fifth.

    @ bubblesdachimp:
I don’t think he’s earned a look yet. He’s had a very impressive season, but given the 40-man roster situation, I just wouldn’t do it. If the cubs had 7 spots open, sure, but I wouldn’t be adding him to the roster until you’re ready to give him the job at either SS or 3rd base. I definitely wouldn’t be adding him to the roster for a September call-up when he has less than 50 games at AA. There’s no hurry.

I agree about not worrying about small market issues, but I don’t see this as one. We might reasonably be able to argue that he’d be one of the best players on the left side of the infield with the Cubs at the start of next season and if so, give him a job. I’d hate for him to be one of the two best and get sent down, but not in September.

Bubs, he probably won’t be on the 40-man until he’s called up. He’s not eligible for the rule 5 draft this offseason so he’s not getting added. The Cubs will worry about finding space when they have a full-time job to give him prior to September.

    @ dmick89:

(dying laughing), i know there’s a lot of psychology involved with being a manager, but it sure would be nice to hear him say: “We feel that Anthony’s our best hitter, true-talent wise, and we want to maximize our run production.”

I dont disagree with any of what you wrote perse. I just think he has earned it and i would like to see him up.

Will be very interesting to see where he is taking balls in the AFL and in ST. I mean i assume he is going to the AFL yes?

Regardless of if he comes up (i do not think he will be)

I have not been this excited for someone in a while. AA is the testing grounds. He is dominating. His walk rate is at about ten percent which is fine. His power is the real deal. He steals bases at an extremely efficient clip.

I do not see why people like Addison Russel and Lindor more. Sano? toss up. But i would say Baez’s power is right there with Sano and Gallo.

Baez and Bryant should really do some amazing shit in a few year. That scoreboard is fucked.

    @ GW:
I think it’s kind of funny. A day or so after he drops him to 8th he puts him 1st. It’s strange. He wants to take pressure off of Rizzo, but in the meantime, he’s only putting more pressure on Castro. If you want to take pressure off, move Castro back to 8th and tell him to hit his way up the lineup.

For as much as some people will bitch about that jumbotron, Bubbs raises an interesting point. How apeshit will Wrigley go when guys like Baez and Bryant are banging HRs off of it?

It’s being put right where some of the deepest HRs get hit (right in front of Kenmore). And can you imagine if someone puts one OVER the damn thing? The place will go bananas.

It’s weird how hitting arbitrary landmarks make HRs more “exciting.” I remember Sammy’s shot in the playoffs almost more because he hit it off the camera booth in CF than because of the situation. Glenallen Hill’s shot onto the roof of the building across the street. Kingman bouncing one 3 doors down on Kenmore. Sammy breaking the window across the street. Sammy hitting one onto the roof of the little pink house that no longer exists.

I still remember Richie Sexson hitting a ball off his face on the scoreboard in Arizona.

    Very weird.

Very timely “apeshit” reference when replying to Bubbs post…kudos.

And just the idea of these things happening, makes me giddy.

I mean they are going to be hitting that shit on the reg…. Basically if the ball was going out of the ballpark in that area it is going to hit the board. Going to be awesome.

Unless the boar is higher up than the pictures look or farther back (i dont see how that is possible but whatever) Batting practice is going to be people peppering it like none other.

I would think if it’s hit regularly it won’t be nearly as exciting. We remember Hill’s home run because of where it went. If every other home run went onto the roof, it wouldn’t be memorable and it would only be as exciting as every other home run.
