JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-29-13

In Minor Leagues by myles34 Comments

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks 4

Snore. Logan Watkins did well, going 2-4 with a double. Donnie Murphy tripled. Ty Wright singled and homered, and Darnell McDonald doubled, walked, and singled. That's it. Mike Olt was 0-4 with another strikeout.

Brooks Raley was very serviceable, allowing 2 runs in 6.2 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 2. Flamethrower Henry Rodriguez coughed the game up with a run in the 8th and 9th.

Birmingham Barons 4 @ Tennessee Smokies 8

Arismendy Alcantara had a great game. He went 3-4 with a walk and 4 RBI, all of them coming with 2 outs. Awesome to see. Javier Baez was 0-4 with a walk and a strikeout. He also had his 4th fielding error. Christian Villanueva was 2-4 with a run scored. Rubi Silva, Brett Jackson, and John Andreoli all singled and scored a run (Andreoli scored 3, walked, stole a base, and was hit by a pitch). Rafael Lopez went 2-3 with a double, walk, and 2 RBIs.

Dae-Eun Rhee was awesome through 6, and ended up leaving a line similar to Raley's; 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR. Hunter Cervenka coughed up a run in 0.2 innings, as did Frank Batista in 2.0 innings.

Daytona Cubs 0 @ Fort Myers Miracle 5

Zeke DeVoss had more hits than the rest of the Cubs combined, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles. Apparently, Anthony Giansanti is just a second baseman now; he drew a walk. Wes Darvill doubled and Taiwan Easterling tripled; 4 of the Cubs' 5 hits were for extra bases, but they still did not score.

Scott Baker continued his rehab with an ok-ish start. In 3.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 2 walks. He also gave up a home run and fanned 2. Yao-Lin Wang allowed 2 hits and a walk in .2 innings, but surrendered no runs of his own. Pierce Johnson went 4 innings and was knocked around for 3 innings; he allowed 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7.

Kane County Cougars 1 @ Peoria Chiefs 14

Dan Vogelbach hit his 16th home run. That's about it.

Jose Rosario allowed 13 runs in 4.2 innings. That's about it.

Spokane Indians 5 @ Boise Hawks 2 (11 innings)

Kris Bryant only gets extra base hits. He doubled and walked (and struck out). Yasiel Balaguert went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. Jose Dore singled for the only other Boise hit (though as a team, they walked 9 times).

Tyler Skulina had a really nice start, pitching 3 scoreless on 2 hits, no walks, 2 strikeouts. Michael Wagner wasn't so good, allowing 5 baserunners in as many outs, allowing a run and punching 3 out. Loiger Padron allowed a run in a trio of innings. My main man Carlos Martinez-Pumarino took the loss, because it was getting late. He probably had a dinner appointment with a foreign dignitary he didn't want to miss. Jasvir Rakkar cleaned it up.

I just want CMP to get to a league where I can see his name on the back of the jersey. That's all I need.

DSL Orioles2 5 @ DSL Cubs 3
VSL Phillies 7 @ VSL Cubs 5

Listening to the baseball america podcast, and they just mentioned that Dan Uggla has 21 homers and 68 hits. (dying laughing) at this.

My philosophy is not to bother memorizing shit I can easily look up. I have no idea if Joe Dimaggio was right or left handed. If it comes up, I can find out pretty quickly. Until this test it has literally never come up once.

My philosophy is you’re a faget.

I missed Buckner, Garvey, Snider, Reggie and Stargell. I knew Reggie was a lefty so I don’t know why I missed him. But the other guys I had no clue.

Ryno, I read the 9ers plan on using Vernon as a WR…..is that just for a package of plays or full-time?

I don’t think it’s full time. I think they plan to use him and Vance McDonald like NE uses Aaron Hernandez (minus the murders) and Gronk, respectively, so they’re diversifying his routes.

I expect to see a lot of the diamond formation, and they could go with McDonald and Davis to make it more of a power formation or Davis and Boldin.

Basically, I think the goal is to get him downfield a little more than usual. Which is a good thing, imo. But he’s still a great blocker, so I don’t expect them to abandon using him as an inline TE.

He’s a definite match-up nightmare for almost anybody who lines up against him. One of the most memorable things for me about that Super Bowl was how he completely embarassed Lewis practically all game. That’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. I can’t wait for football.

That’s what RC got. SK and I got 36. The rest of these people? I don’t know what’s wrong with them. (dying laughing)

I mean, isn’t this a cast iron cookware, board games, Breaking Bad, restaurants above replacement blog?

Everyone embarrassed Lewis. He’s lucky SF called timeout on that second down play at the end. Kaepernick would have made him look ridiculous and scored the go-ahead TD.

Anybody want my tickets for the Puig debut at Wrigley on Thursday evening?

I think the face is like $52 each. I’m selling them for $50 for the pair.

    Section 409, Row 5 (I think… row 5 or 6, anyway) – right above the Cubs bullpen.

    @ JonKneeV:
Did you read that Nate Silver interview in Deadspin yesterday? Nate mentioned that we should think about replacement level for many things, including restaurants. He said Qdoba was a replacement level fast food place. I have a problem with that. McDonalds has to be replacement level for fast food. I’ve never had Qdoba or Chipotle, but I bet anything they’re better than replacent level simply because fast food sucks. It has to be on the higher end in that category. If we use the same method, I’d bet we’d find that, of fast food places, McDonald’s makes up about 20% of them. Close to anyway.
