JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-23-13

In Minor Leagues by myles39 Comments

New Orleans Zephyrs 0 @ Iowa Cubs 1

The only run in the game was scored in the bottom of the 9th. Logan Watkins went 2-4 and was the only real offense. Donnie Murphy was 1-4 and scored the only run of the game off a Edwin Maysonet (remember him?) single to send the Des Moines crowd happy. Mike Olt hasn't played yet.

Guillermo Moscoso had probably his best game of the year. He walked 3 and allowed 1 hit in 5 innings. He struck out 9. He went 8 scoreless 2 starts ago (and allowed 1 fewer baserunner), but I'll take the 9 strikeouts over the 5. New I-Cub Henry Rodriguez allowed 2 hits but no runs. Casey Coleman went 2 scoreless to hand it over to Brian Schlitter, who rebounded nicely for his first Iowa win.

Tennessee Smokies 4 @ Huntsville Stars 6

Javier Baez hit his 5th HR in Tennessee, so he's now tied with his singles total. His line sits at .203/.242/.492. Arismendy Alcantara was 0-fer. Christian Villanueva, Rubi Silvaand John Andreoli each doubled once.

Huntsville has a 70 name-tool alert with Chadwin Stang. He went 1-3 with a walk.

Eric Jokisch was real bad, but was unlucky also. He went 6 and allowed 6 runs, but he gave up 2 HR and only had a WHIP of 1.5 in the game. We has a mite unlucky. Marcos Mateo and Frank Batista each threw a scoreless frame.

St. Lucie Mets 5 @ Daytona Cubs 3 (Game 1)

Kevin Plawecki was 1-3 with a walk for the Mets. Wes Darvill was 3-3 with a double. That's awesome. Dustin Geiger doubled. Everyone else, meh.

Zach Cates didn't get out of the first. He allowed 5 runs in 0.2 innings and it would have been worse had Austin Reed not stranded all 3 inherited runners. He pitched 4.1 awesome frames. Chang-Yong Lim pitched 2 scoreless also.

St. Lucie Mets 0 @ Daytona Cubs 7 (Game 2)

Plawecki played 1B in this game and went 0-3. Wes Darvill continued with his awesome day, going 2-3 with a double and a triple. Pin-Chieh Chen went 1-2 with a walk and a jack.

Pierce Johnson had a fairly mediocre performance for him, but it was still 5 scoreless innings. He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks, and fanned 3. Frank of the Valley went 2 innings and allowed a single hit.

Boise Hawks 6 @ Eugene Emeralds 0

Jacob Hannemann went 2-4 with 2 runs and a walk, which was awesome. Daniel Lockhart went 1-3 with 2 walks. Kris Bryant…didn't. He went 0-5 with 5 strikeouts. Top Prospects! Jacob Rogers was 2-4 with a double and a jack and a walk. Yasiel Balaguert doubled as did David Bote.

Thank god that Dillon Maples had a nice start. 5 innings, 5 hits, no walks, 7 strikeouts, no mercy. Corbin Hoffner went 3 innings of scoreless baseball, and my main man CMP went 1 inning in which he struck out the side, than saved 3 kittens from burning trees.

DSL Osos 6 @ DSL Tigres 1
AZL Indians 2 @ AZL Cubs 7

David DeJesus went 1-3 and walked. Everyone but Garrett Schlecht and Xavier Batista had a hit.

Starling Peralta went 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, 1 earned.

View From the Bleachers said on Twitter that Bryant only saw 16 pitches in his 5 Ks. I can’t find any pitch counts or anything like that. Do they track pitches per plate appearance in A ball?

    @ Aisle424:
Not that low in the minors. The only way to know is if you listened to the game or someone who was there said something. They track ball in play outs, hits and HBP as just one pitch. They list strikeouts as 3 pitches only and walks as 4 pitches. I don’t think you get actual pitch counts until AA.

Bryant has had a hard time making contact so far, but it’s so few games that it’s probably nothing. Hopefully nothing.

OK, those pitch counts are probably wrong. In looking at other players, it looks like almost every at-bat was a 4 pitch walk, a 3 pitch K, or a first pitch put in play.

Yeah, that low in the minors, that’s how they do it. I am interested in why that one AB has a 4 pitch strikeout. Probably an error on their part. I’d say the odds of him striking out on 15, 16 pitches is awfully slim. Especially when 4 of those are called out on strikes. It was a bad game whether it was 15 pitches or 55, but means nothing at this point. Kind of funny, though. (dying laughing)

By the way, great job keeping up with IFA’s, GW. I’ve been lukewarm on most of the guys you’ve covered, but I really like the last guy. Those are some good numbers in comparison to others.

Like anyone can even know that.

    @ JonKneeV:
It is, but he’s been in the system too long to be at Boise. He needs to pitch well there and get moved back to Kane County for at least the last few weeks of their season.

I started doing those because Cuban stats are so hard to come by, thinking it might be a way to generate a few clicks for the site when they end up signing. But, yeah, most of them have been pretty mediocre.

Guerrero seems like he could be a steal at 7/32, though, if that’s what he ends up getting from the Dodgers. I hope someone makes them pay a little more than that.

Clay is about the only one who has them, right? I am quite sure he’s the only one who does translations. It’s hard to find a lot of info on these guys so I’m impressed by the coverage you’ve had on this.

    @ dmick89:

yeah, but Clay hasn’t updated his database since the 2011 season. it’s also frustrating because he doesn’t show complete box score stats, so i have to estimate PA for batters and TBF for pitchers if I want to show those.

I try to get as much as I can from the Spanish-language sites.

    @ GW:

I think if Soriano does indeed get moved, his legacy with the Cubs will ultimately be looked at under a different, more positive light. Where once he was known to some for underperforming his contract, it gradually came to light that he is a player with a very strong work ethic as well as an esteemed veteran who is looked upon highly by his teammates. The Cubs will miss his leadership off the field and his power production on it.

It didn’t gradually come to light. We heard about how great a teammate Soriano was back in his first couple seasons. We heard it every year after. We heard over the years he was one of the hardest working players in the game. We heard he was one of the greatest guys to be around because he always had a smile and was friendly with everyone else.

MO and I talked about this a few years ago when Cubs fans hated Soriano and trashed him. It went against everything that we already knew about Soriano. At least the media finally got it right. I suspect that Thoyer had a better way of getting this point across to the media than Hendry’s front office did. I’m glad for Soriano that he has gotten positive media coverage again, but it shouldn’t have taken as long as it did.

I took a couple years of Spanish in high school, but have forgotten everything since. I took Russian in college and there’s not exactly much opportunity to use it in the US so it’s not a whole hell of a lot better. Spanish would have been a much better choice, but now I live in Kansas and there are like 3 Hispanics in Topeka.

I definitely give them credit for that. The media is lightning-quick at painting these big-contract guys as clubhouse cancers who need to be traded immediately. A few years ago a couple of articles to that effect were published about the Giants and Barry Zito, and Zito is famously a mellow guy who loves bland john mayer music and surfing.

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply that I can speak Spanish. As RTR and SVB can attest, that’s definitely not the case. It’s not that hard to pull stats from them, though, if you have an idea of what you are looking for. For whatever reason, it hasn’t been done very much. There is no Cuban Sean Forman.

I actually listened to the Boise game last night (at least for the first 4 strikeouts – who knew there’d be 5)

The radio guy said Bryant looked very rusty. He struck swinging on a pitch up in the zone on a full count in the 1st. His next time up was looking, but the radio guy thought it was potentially not a strike. The next one I missed, and the 4th one was an ugly one where he didn’t sound like he looked good at all.

Kind of a crappy day for Bryant. He tweeted out a picture of the plane he flew on and it was a tiny little United Express prop plane. He had to fly from AZ to OR and then was in the lineup right away. Of course, Jacob Hannemann managed the same feat without being awful.

Whatever though, I’m impressed by the 0-5 5K. That sounds genuinely hard to do. At least he didn’t spike himself.

Dillon Maples sounded pretty awesome though. The announcer was very impressed by his stuff. Hopefully whatever mechanical changes he’s making will stick so they can get him back to Kane County.

I think it’s pretty clear that Kris Bryant has mono and he bumped his head on the UA Express puddle jumper to add vertigo to his problems. He’s done. Move on.

I LOVE Google translate. It produces absolutely hilarious results when going from Spanish to English. And it makes it really easy to put a zero on the top of an assignment.
