JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-21-13

Iowa Cubs 0 @ Round Rock Express 3

Logan Watkins had half of the 4 hits the I-Cubs had today. He also stole a base. Donnie Murphy had a double, and Josh Vitters had a single and a walk. That was it. This team S-U-C-K-S to watch and write about. Besides Watkins and Vitters, I'm not sure a single position player would make a Top 50 Cubs prospects list (maybe Anthony Giansanti?).

Mike Olt, maybe a Cub someday, went 2-3 with a 2B and a HR.

Barret Loux took the start and did ok. He was scoreless in 5, but allowed 8 baserunners in his 5 innings. He did strike out 5. Alberto Cabrera, newly promoted to Iowa, only pitched 2 innings and didn't start. I don't get it; he was just stretched out to start again this year, and now you put him in the pen to protect arms such as Brooks Raley and Barret Loux? Come on. Brian Schlitter got Olt'ed in the 8th inning.

Loux has quietly been the blade in his last 10. In 7 starts (3 relief appearances), he's had 40.1 innings where he's struck out 43, and had a 2.01 ERA with a .204 avg against. His FIP in Iowa is 3.56, which is actually better than last year, and it would be 7th in the PCL if he qualified. His numbers are similar to Jarrod Cosart's, a very well regarded prospect that just debuted for the Astros. I don't think Loux is much of a prospect, but he's got as good a shot as Rusin/Raley/Negrin/Moscoso to make a play for the #5 spot in Chicago in 2014 should Chicago wish to fill the position internally.

Jacksonville Suns 8 @ Tennessee Smokies 1

Only 3 hits in this one, but the three best positional prospects (ish) got one each. Arismendy Alcantara and Javier Baez each doubled and struck out twice, and Rubi Silva doubled but never struck out. That's right, 3 doubles and no singles as a team. 3 walks, too: a pair by Chad Noble and one by the pitcher, A.J. Morris. 6 errors, jesus. Silva, Alcantara, Bour, Morris, Szczur, and Baez (3rd of the year, a missed catch no doubt caused by Jupiter being in the fifth house or something).

A.J. Morris was lit up in this game. He allowed 5 runs, 2 earned, on 10 hits and a walk in 4 innings. Hunter Cervenka, who came to the Cubs in the Theo compensation deal, pitched 2 scoreless. Kevin Rhoderick allowed a trio of runs in the 7th inning to put it way out of hand. Tony Zych and Nate Samson each pitched a scoreless frame; Nate Samson is a 3B.

St. Lucie Mets 7 @ Daytona Cubs 5

Kevin Plawecki went 0-3 with a pair of walks for the Mets. I mention this only because he is a Purdue grad. Boiler Up!

6 hits for the Cubs, a windfall comparatively. Zeke DeVoss was 2-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs, and 2 stolen bases. Very nice effort in LF. Wes Darvill, Elliot Sotoand Bijan Rademacher each singled, and Dustin Geiger hit a double. Geiger also walked, as did Darvill, Ben Carhart, and Brad Zapenas

Ben Wells allowed 3 runs in 4 innings, but had a game WHIP of 2.25. Yao-Lin Wang also surrendered 3, but only took him 3 innings. Lendy Castillo allowed a solo home run but no other damage in 2 innings. It was his first game since being "promoted" to Daytona from Kane County. He didn't deserve it.

Lansing Lugnuts 5 @ Kane County Cougars 6

The Kane County Cougars had 3 hits… more than AAA, AA, and A+ combined. Gioskar Amaya started the party with a 4-4, BB day. Albert Almora was 3-5 with a walk and a triple. Dan Vogelbach was 2-4 with a walk. Jeimer Candelario was 2-4 with a walk and a double. Rock Shoulders had a double. Giuseppe Papaccio had a single and a walk. Reggie Golden had a home run and a double. Oliver Zapata was a single and a walk. Jeez. And they still only scored 6 runs.

Tayler Scott got the start and had a QS. He went 6 IP, allowed 3 R (2 ER), and struck out only one. Matt Iannazzo had a rough day, recording a single out and allowing 2 runs. Armando Rivero and Michael Hamann pitched 1.2 and 2.0 scoreless frames, respectively.

Everett AquaSox 0 @ Boise Hawks 7

Shawon Dunston was 4-5 with 2 RBI, and out-hit the AquaSox alone. Lance Rymel added a pair of singles and a walk, and Yasiel Balaguert had a double as well ads a walk. David Bote and Cael Brockmeyer each had 2 hits, but Brockmeyer had a triple, walk, and RBI while Bote had a double and 3 RBI. Jordan Hankins also went 3-4 with 2 runs.

As you expect in a 3-hit shutout, the pitching was dominant. James Pugliese went 5 innings and allowed 2 hits, striking out 3. Tyler Skulina, new Cub, went 2 innings walking 1 and fanning 5 (!). Michael Wagner15th round, also went 2 innings, walking 1 and allowing a hit but fanning 2.

VSL Osos 6 @ VSL Marineros 7
AZL Cubs 9 @ AZL Dodgers 10

Jacob Hannemann returned from his injury and went 1-4 with a double and 2 RBI. So did David DeJesus, but omit the 2 RBI. Kris Bryant was Real Bad, going 0-3 with a strikeout and 3 errors. Also, Greg Rohan showed up! I wonder what happened to that guy, but he went 1-4.

I remember watching Joe Borowski pitch. I was wearing an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. He was a closer I recently enjoyed.

    @ Berselius:

Despite using the Nos. 6-9 starters the majority of the season, the pitching hasn’t really been the problem with TEX.

    I just don’t get that move…
