JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-9-13

In Minor Leagues by myles8 Comments

Pittsburgh Pirates 1 @ Chicago Cubs 4

Anthony Rizzo had a good day, going 0-2 with a pair of walks and no strikeouts. Starlin Castro continues to be awful (0-4, 2K). None of the trade bait really played today. Scott Hairston is theoretically trade bait and he went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts and an RBI. Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg each threw a scoreless frame. Edwin Jackson had a great outing, allowing 5 baserunners and a single run over 7 innings, striking out 8.

Round Rock Express 7 @ Iowa Cubs 10

Logan Watkins had a good day, which have been harder to come by this year. He went 2-4 with a walk and an RBI. Brett Jackson had 3 runs, a home run, a walk, and a single. Not to be undone, Brad Nelson launched 2 home runs and drew a walk of his own to go with a single and 3 RBI. Steve Clevenger also had a nice day, going 2-4 with an RBI. Junior Lake went 3-5 with a double and an RBI. Also, how does Junior Lake already have 5 errors on the season? Jesus. Brent Lillibridge had a double. Ian Stewart didn't have a hit but walked twice. Sooner or later, he's going to walk to some other teams' triple-A affiliate.

Brooks Raley got the win allowing 7 runs in 5 innings. What a great stat. Eduardo Sanchez allowed a single hit in 2 innings. He struck out 3. Michael Bowden got the save after allowing no baserunners in 2 innings and striking out 4.

Tennessee Smokies 5 @ Mobile BayBears 3 (11 innings)

Jonathan Mota broke the tie in the 11th with a HR. He went 3-5 with that jack and a double. Arismendy Alcantara drew 3 walks and went 0-2 otherwise. Christian Villanueva also had 2 walks, and went 0-4. Ronald Torreyes had a single in 3 at bats.

Yeiper Castillo is ice cold. He allowed only 2 runs in 4 innings yesterday, but gave up 4 hits and 5 walks. He was just lucky to only give up 2. Hunter Cervenka pitched 2.1 scoreless relief innings, and Tony Zych pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief as well. Frank Batista blew the save, but then got the win as he pitched 3.2 innings of 1-run ball.

Brevard County Manatees 2 @ Daytona Cubs 8 (7 innings)

John Andreoli is the next Matt Szczur/Logan Watkins. He had another 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, and no hits. He scored 2 runs and stole 2 bases, up to 18 on the year. Tim Saunders has 2nd in the order, and scored 3 runs of his own off of a single, a double, and a walk. Javier Baez was 1-4 with a double, as was Jorge Soler. Baez also had his 25th error because of course he did. Dustin Geiger had a 2-run jack and another run-scoring hit, and drew a walk to boot.

Kyler Burke, 32 years old seemingly, drew the start and pitched a gem. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings, with 4 hits and a walk. He fanned 5. Yao-Lin Wang pitched 2 scoreless innings to close it out.

Brevard County Manatees 2 @ Daytona Cubs 3 (7 innings)

Much more muted game this time. Javier Baez had 2 walks and went 0-1 otherwise. I'll take that every day of the week. John Andreoli had 2 hits and 2 runs scored, one from a Zeke DeVoss double (he also had a walk) and one from a Jorge Soler out. That was basically it.

P.J. Francescon had 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. He allowed 2 runs. Eduardo Figueroa allowed a walk and a hit in 2 innings, striking out 4 and allowing no runs.

Kane County Cougars 4 @ Cedar Rapids Kernels 8

Dan Vogelbach hit his 11th home run of the season, a 2-run jack in the 5th innings. He added a walk and a double so he had a great game. Albert Almora's average continues to plummet, now at .433 after a 2-5 game. Bijan Rademacher was 2-5 with a run scored. Jeimer Candelario had another double (his 18th) and a walk as well. Marco Hernandez had a solo shot, his 2nd of the year.

What happened to Dillon Maples? He allowed a single hit, that's good. However, he walked 7 in 2 innings en route to 4 earned runs. That's not so good. Justin Amlung and Nathan Dorris each provided 2 scoreless relief innings, but Felix Pena didn't, allowing 4 runs in his 2 innings for the loss.

VSL Phillies 6 @ VSL Cubs 0

The Cubs had as many baserunners as they did errors (3). 3 singles, no walks, no hope.

I would say “What am I, chopped liver?”, but chopped liver would be pretty good bait.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised. I think a TON of shuffling is going to happen soon, just after the new signees get sent to their teams.

Is it just me or is the wind of change blowing in something good for this organization?

Actually, I think I’m smelling a piece of ham that fell behind my computer. FALSE ALARM PEOPLE!
