JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-5-13

Would people derive some benefit from my inclusion of yesterday's major league game in these? If so, I can start doing those as well, but I'm just assuming you follow the Cubs enough to know what happens day by day at the MLB level.

Triple A wasn't scheduled, Double A and A+ were postponed.

Kane County Cougars 8 @ Burlington Bees 6

The Cougars absolutely mauled the ball in this one; the only player without a hit was Gioskar Amaya, who struck out 4 times. Oliver Zapata had a nice game with 2 doubles. Albert Almora should be demoted, now hitting only .429 after a 1-5 performance. Dan Vogelbach had the best game of the bunch, going 2-3 with a double, a home run, and 2 walks. Jeimer Candelario had a 2-5 game, with an RBI. People have been ragging a bit on Jeimer all year, but he's maintained his OBP while increasing his walks after a promotion AND being really young for his league. I think he'll be fine even if he's never a star and his ISO never comes. Rock Shoulders was 2-3 with a walk. Reggie Golden raised his average on the year to .368 with 3 singles and 2 RBI. Marco Hernandez had a triple from the 9 hole.

Pierce Johnson gave up a pair of home runs to Sherman Johnson, who owned him all day. Other than that, he allowed 2 unearned runs over 5 innings for a final line of 5 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 2 HR. Eddie Orozco allowed 2 in as many innings and Felix Pena had 2 scoreless to close it out.

DSL Cubs 3 @ DSL Cardinals 10

Jose Zapata pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief.

VSL Tigers 4 @ VSL Cubs 5

Roney Alcala went 4-4 with a run scored.

…Though since I don’t get to see many games, if someone actually watches a lot of Cubs games, or spends a lot more time with the stats than I do, and they see some interesting trends, I’d like to read about that. In the vein of the “Castro isn’t any better” post. Like if you see an improvement in the double play capabilities in the last week, or that F7’s recent success is because his slider has 15% more break on it, or whatever.

    Sentence fragments rule.

    What time is the draft?

I like recaps about the major league team, but I also watch the Cubs whenever I can, so I don’t really need to read about it again.

In unrelated news, I also enjoy being depressed and watching train wrecks.

I’d be interested in getting a Cubs inclusion (AAAA?) in these recaps. I’m not expecting anything more detailed than what you devote to the minor league entries, but it would be nice to keep track of how the viable pieces are doing. Kind of like you only pay attention to the legitimate prospects in the recaps, do the same for the big league club and include trade pieces.

As it is, I have to go to bref, BN, or cubs.com every so often to keep up with how Rizzo, Castro and those guys are doing. I’d rather have OV be my one-stop-shop. That, and a little more coverage of transactions – on the rare days when I turn on the TV, I’m a little surprised how many guys I have to look up from the pen and bench.

Does anyone think Borbon is going to stick?

Is Vogelbach’s drop in stats expected due to the increase in level of play? Reading these recaps I thought he was playing well, but looking at his page it seems he isn’t compared to last year.

Yup. Interleague Scheduling is a bitch.

What is the point of this shit anymore? Two games in Anaheim? I turned on a game the other day between SFG and TOR and it was like, why bother?

Since owners must still earn from it, I guess it would take the MLBPA to push against it. Having two days off in a week to accommodate flying CHI-LA and back for two games is a good argument for them to use. A contender would probably be resting star veterans during that kind of crap anyway, so the home team wouldn’t get to see ’em.

They have to do random interleague games now with the ‘stros defecting.

On any given day, either two teams have a day off or there must be an interleague game.

I know. I don’t mind one team from each league having a day off. But if they kept this alignment and eliminated interleague, I guess that would mean teams would have two days off in a row once in awhile — one because of the odd number followed by a normal travel day.

    @ Suburban kid:
I don’t think they could give that many days off without extending the season. Basically, there just has to be IL games, which means there will be weird matchups and schedule quirks. I noticed they still had a rivalry week like before, where most of the IL games were with a team that was nearby.
