Iowa Cubs 0 @ Memphis Redbirds 7

Memphis scored 6 runs in the 1st inning. The Cubs had 0 walks and 1 hit (Jae-Hoon Ha, who was then caught stealing). I quit.

Jackson Generals 6 @ Tennessee Smokies 7 (14 innings)

They played a minor league doubleheader's worth of innings in this one. Arismendy Alcantara had 2 walks and a single in this one. Matt Szczur drew a walk, had 2 singles, and a double. His average on the year is now .301. Justin Bour had a double, a single, and a walk. Christian Villanueva had only a single hit, but it was a 2-run jack. Elliot Soto also had a solo shot and a single.

The Cubs had 6 pitchers in this one. Most notable was the 2.1 scoreless, 1-walk innings of relief by Kevin Rhoderick. 

Lakeland Flying Tigers 2 @ Daytona Cubs 5

The brunt of the offense came on a triple by Wes Darvill, who also singled in the game. Zeke DeVoss scored 2 runs on one hit. Tim Saunders had a run scored and a double and RBI, and Pin-Chieh Chen had 2 hits and a walk. Yaniel Cabezas had 2 hits as well, bringing his average up to a stout .207.

Matt Loosen toed the rubber and went 7 strong innings. He allowed a walk and a hit and a single run, and struck out 8. That's domination. Carlos Gutierrez surrendered the other run in 2 innings, but it was unearned off of Javier Baez (0-4) and his 29th error. He missed the catch because his first baseman is so bad and his field is awful or whatever.

Beloit Snappers 9 @ Kane County Cougars 5

It seems like it's been a year since Vogelbach hit a home run. He went 2-4 with a walk and pair of singles; he also stole his 4th base of the year (defensive indifference). Albert Almora went 2-5 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Jeimer Candelario had 2 singles and a run batted in (and his 19th error). Rock Shoulders got the nod at DH and went 2-5 as well. Willson Contreras had a double and 2 RBI (and his 12th error). Gioskar Amaya was HBP and had a double as well.

Brian Smith couldn't get past the 1st inning, but allowed no earned runs. 2 errors will do that to you: 5 runs allowed in 1 inning off of 2 home runs. Lendy Castillo came in relief and surrendered 3 in 4, as is his wont. Nathan Dorris provided 3.1 innings of quality relief, and Stephen Perakslis did 0.2 of the same.

Chicago Cubs 3 @ Milwaukee Brewers 9

Starlin Castro got the day off. That's noteworthy in itself. Nate Schierholtz continues to be the lone offensive success in the line, going 2-4 with a 3-run blast. He also struck out once. Actually, I take that back, because Ryan Sweeney is having a nice little year. He went 1-4 with a double today, as did Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo hasn't struggled nearly as much as people think he has. Sure, he hasn't taken a Great Leap Forward, but it's more like a shuffle to the side. His wOBA last year was .349; this year it's .347, which is actually an improvement because the offensive environment is slightly dampened this year. He's providing his value in a slightly different way; less singles and more doubles (his BABIP is down 34 points, but his ISO is up 39). He's also walking a good deal more than he did last year, while maintaining his low strikeout rate. The more you look at his numbers, the happier you should get. He's even improved his baserunning (SSS alert). The primary driver of his improved season is the drastically lower number of pitches he swings at out of the strike zone (from 35.3% to 29.4%). 

Edwin Jackson joined the elusive 10-loss club (members- Cole Hamels, Edwin Jackson, Joe Blanton) with another great performance. His ERA sits at 5.84 and he had only a single strikeout in the game. I think it's very fair to wonder whether or not he is injured. Hector Rondon continues on the Lendy Castillo path to a mystery injury, allowing 2 runs in 1.1 innings. His ERA this year is 6.23; I don't get it, he looks (to me) like he's not that bad, but results are results. Shawn Camp provided 2 innings of 1-run ball. Please cut him soon, Jed, and get a more promising arm on the 40-man.

Juan Carlos Paniagua sighting! He went 4 innings for the DSL squad and allowed 1 hit and no walks. He struck out 5.

    I don’t know if anyone here is a law nerd, but Chief Justice Roberts’ majority opinion yesterday in Shelby County v. Holder essentially read as “the Voting Rights Act is so good we decided to cut it short.” (dying laughing)

    Wow, I didn’t realize how depressed the run environment is this year. Of course, It’s still early, but It’s the lowest it’s been since the early 90’s.
