In Minor Leagues by myles3 Comments

Tucson Padres 3 @ Iowa Cubs 7

Logan Watkins went 0-4 today without walking or striking out. Both Brian Bogusevic and 2 Brett 2 Jackson went 1-3 with a walk, strikeout, and run scored. Dave Sappelt is coming around, with a 2-4, 2 run performance. Brad Nelson had a great day; he had a 2-run jack and a double, scoring 5 RBIs. Donnie Murphy also had a home run. Hyde Yokids went 0-3 with a strikeout and 2 throwing errors. As a team, the Cubs only walked twice, but only struck out 6 times. They were 3-8 with RISP.

Nick Struck turned it on, a welcome sight given how poorly he's pitched this year. He went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs. He also struck out and walked 4. Yoanner Negrin went 3 innings for the save, allowing a single run on 4 hits and no walks. He also struck out 4.

I had a little chat with Sahadev Sharma on twitter about Javier Baez the other day.

  1. And Baez took a walk in a 3-for-9 day. Only K'ed once. I'll have more on him, Soler & some other Cubs prospects in a piece coming next week.

  2. Equal number of errors and hits. Baez is the most disappointing prospect the Cubs have had this year and it isn't even close.

  3. he's only disappointing if you previously ignored his issues. This isn't a surprise to most scouts. How he adjusts now is key

  4. That's just it, though; he's had 240 plate appearances at A+ and he hasn't really adjusted at all. If anything he's backslid

I don't care how many tools are in the shed if the shed is permanently locked. in this case, the shed also strikes out a lot

Sahadev does good work, and he doesn't seem all that worried about Baez. Hopefully he's right. Baez went 1-3 with a walk and no strikeouts. He also scored a run and celebrated by committing 2 more errors. John Andreoli played left, shifted to right, and went 1-5. Wes Darvill had a nice little game; he had a double and a walk. Jorge Soler had a quiet bat; 0-3 with no walks or strikeouts. Players 5-8 in the lineup each had a single RBI. The Cubs only struck out once in this game (Tim Saunders, who also had a double and 2 stolen bases).

Ben Wells had another middling start. He went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks. He also struck out 3 and allowed a solo shot to Aaron WestlakeJeffrey Lorick and Luis Liria both pitched 2 strong innings to pick up the win and save, respectively.

Kane County Cougars 7 @ Cedar Rapids Kernels 8

Gioskar Amaya went 1-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a strikeout. Dan Vogelbach went 0-3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Jeimer Candelario was 2-4 with a double, his 15th of the year. Rock Shoulders went 1-4 with a 2-run homer. Bijan Rademacher continues to put up a nice, hollow average, going 2-4.

Jose Rosario went 4 innings and only allowed 2 hits and a walk. Good, right? Nah, he didn't strike anyone out, and allowed a  home run and an unearned run. Ian Dickson really did not do well, allowing 6 earned runs in 4 innings also. Eddie Orozco allowed the loss in 0.2 innings. He walked 2, so good on him.
