Jose Dariel Abreu Defects, Alexander Guerrero Bidding Still Open

José-Dariel-Abreu-Nelson-CostaJose Dariel Abreu Defects

As has been widely reported, 26-year old Cuban slugger Jose Dariel Abreu has defected with the intention of becoming a free agent in Major League Baseball. He is currently in Haiti, and Jesse Sanchez is a little miffed that he didn’t get the scoop this time around. Abreu has probably been one of the best hitters in la Serie Nacional for a few years now. I’ll have more on him later, but my brief thoughts are as follows:

  1. Abreu can absolutely mash.
  2. He’s going to get paid. (I’ll set the initial over/under at $90 million.)
  3. It could be a while before he becomes eligible to sign. Like, maybe up to a year. There is no doubt that he is old enough to be exempt from MLB’s spending restrictions, but the treasury department isn’t always prompt on these matters.
  4. No, Anthony Rizzo can’t play left.

Alexander Guerrero Bidding Back Open?

While it’s a good rule of thumb that agreements with Latin-American IFAs reported prior to a player becoming eligible are all but done deals, there are exceptions. Dionisio Soldevila previously had SS/2B Alexander Guerrero agreeing to a seven-year, $32 million deal with the Dodgers. That struck me as fairly low, and it appears that other teams agree. The latest word is that another team has made him a better offer (read: Twins), and a third team may still be in, as well. I would not be disappointed if the Cubs are that other team. Guerrero is still waiting on clearance from the OFAC. I hope to have more on him in the coming days.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez Hurt?

A week ago, the Phillies had reportedly agreed to a deal worth at least $48 million with Cuban right-handed pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Now it seems that the deal has hit a snag. Speculation seems to be centered on an elbow issue. Gonzalez previously dealt with bone spurs in his elbow while pitching in Cuba. The Cubs were said to be interested if his price were to drop, though we’ve heard no word on that front lately. The Phils originally outbid the Red Sox for Gonzalez.

Adrian Beltre should go into the HOF, but not for this…

Also, the Cubs–>Royals thing is what is being trumpeted by the anti-Theo/Hoyer crowd who hate prospects and don’t want a perpetual rebuild. I don’t think the plan is a perpetual rebuild and spinning wheels, but that’s the idea behind that sentiment from the people I talk to. I did not read Yellon’s piece.

I refuse to believe if Miguel Cabrera can play third that Anthony Rizzo can’t play left. This in no way suggests he’d be any better there than Cabrera is at third.

    @ sitrick:

cabrera started out as a ss in the minors, and played quite a bit of third and outfield early on in his career.

more importantly, though, the padres had the chance to try rizzo in the outfield when they were trying to get kyle blanks and jesus guzman at bats. they moved the 6’6″, 265 lb (at least) blanks instead. the cubs could have given him some time in the outfield in case lahair hit well enough to stick around the bigs for a few years. they didn’t, instead using lahair in the outfield. as far as i can tell, rizzo has never played a professional game away from first base, despite starting his career at 17. it’s just not going to happen.
