I have a good feeling about the Deej today. He had roughly 13271 walk off hits in spring training so he should be a Winner.

Nah, Whitenack was the obligatory injury news today. Ramirez will only pinch hit in four games over the next two weeks, then randomly get DLed with a foot injury.

    48. 48 mb21 says:

Guerrieri will be one of the toughest calls for clubs in the first round. He has one of the draft’s best arms, and among preps he ranks behind only Oklahomans Dylan Bundy and Archie Bradley in pure stuff. Guerrieri has a pitcher’s body at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds with long arms, coat-hanger shoulders and present strength. Getting his “man strength,” to use the scouting term, has allowed him to maintain his delivery better, and his stuff has improved as a result. At his best, Guerrieri’s fastball touches 98 mph and sits in the 93-96 range. He throws his curveball with power as well at 80-83 mph. He flashes a changeup and a cutter in side sessions but rarely uses them in games. Like most high school pitchers, his velocity can vary from start to start, but he still sits 91-93 on his off days. His athleticism and strength allow him to repeat his delivery well, though his command is a question. A South Carolina signee, Guerrieri could go in the first 10 picks if teams are sold on his makeup, but many are not. He’s on his second high school thanks to off-field incidents at North Augusta (S.C.) High, and scouts continue to research his decision-making. — Baseball America

If there is a “pissing match” going on, who is it between? Very surprised to see Gordo use that phrase in a “family” newspaper. I’m also wondering when Yellon was allowed to start ghost writing for him. That’s a hell of a first sentence.

Still no mention that Ricketts didn’t really spend much on the draft considering he said building up the farm system was going to be a point of emphasis. I thought Gordo was more critical of what the farm system currently is which really pre-dates Ricketts. I’m very interested to see what they spend on the draft this season and if it gets any play in the local media. I’m betting they don’t do anything above average and it’s not noted.

I think Gordo and the rest are just getting warned up now. They might not be very informed on MLB financial matters or the Cubs farm system and draft strategy, but with the team already out of contention, these guys are going to have much more fun piling on blame on the front office than cataloguing the daily comedy or errors on the field.

You’re right the beat writers take little notice of draft spending and stuff like that, but these guys are going to need stuff to write about. They might just wake up and start pointing out the contradictions between Ricketts’ words and deeds.

I think the whole debt ratio being out of MLB guidelines is really a non-story because I’m pretty sure that part of Zell’s terms for selling required the buyer to take on a lot of debt in the new entity of which Tribco still owns 5%. All part of Zells structuring of taking over Tribco and avoiding taxes.

As you guys have pointed out here many times, the more concerning issue is what effect declining attendance has on the Rickettsessess spending on payroll, player development etc. I would think that old man Ricketts (or his advisers) would have understood the debt issue going in but may not have foreseen the drop in operating revenue coming in.

I’m as certain as I can be having never seen the Cubs’ financials or the models the Ricketts surely built when projecting revenue as they prepared a bid.

I said at the time that shit surely went way worse than most anybody expected and it happened faster than anyone expected. The collapse of the economy coupled with the collapse of the team’s core of highly paid players was something that could only happen to the Cubs. In that way, I do feel bad for the Ricketts, because this isn’t what they thought they were buying into. They thought they had a couple of years before the team fell apart, and by then they’d have their renovations well underway, they’d have a couple of years of a packed stadium and rising advertising revenue to help pay down their debt and then they would have a nice stocked farm system to start over while not lowering ticket prices at all and actually finding ways to bleed the most money from the high impact games as possible.

Instead they got under performance from just about everybody they were counting on. Hell, even Ted Lilly got hurt. So they had to enact Plan B, which was pretend to compete to fool everyone for a couple of years, but the Cubs have managed to underperform even those meager goals.

Now nobody gives a shit, the team is practically incapable of winning more than 2 in a row at any time against any opponent, and therefore not even able to have one of those “tease” runs that get people all worked up about the possibilities of the future. I’d probably be avoiding the beat writers too if I were Ricketts.

But when I think what their original plan was and how it really had nothing to do with winning, I lose any ounce of sympathy that they were bit in the ass by Cubdom. They need to come in here and impose a will on this team that it would fucking win, and instead they just kept everyone around and ran the same fucking playbook of a mid-market team (and a poorly run one, at that.)

Ricketts has said he came in being clueless about day to day so he just wanted to observe. It does seem strange that he would trust Kenney/Hendry and the others already employed there to be qualified. He didn’t have to fire them but he should have hired someone who knew how to run a baseball team to come in with him and see what was going on. That’s really the crux of it. During and immediately after the 2008 season, it felt like they were legitimately getting there. What a fucking tease.

There’s no reason for a large market team in a weak division not to dominate every year, or at least 4 years in 5. They shouldn’t just win regularly; they should fucking destroy and humiliate their opposition.
