I can’t argue with you today.
Amusing…but wrong.
In the pre-game, Kap said he wrote a blog, “suggesting the Cubs move Starlin Castro to second base and put Darwin Barney, a natural shortstop, at short.”
What the fuck is a “natural” shortstop and why wouldn’t Castro qualify as one as well? If he thinks Barney is a better defensive SS, then say so, he’s not somehow “naturally” more qualified to play there. I should have known better than to turn on Comcast before the game began.

Great. The Brenly-Kap-FPM Stone Human Centipede has gone into Barney > Castro overdrive.

Kap outstupided himself with that one. I didn’t hear it, but Castro is a gem at SS.
Great. The Brenly-Kap-FPM Stone Human Centipede has gone into Barney > Castro overdrive.
That’s exactly what I thought. We’re going to hear more of this. Quade was asked about it in the dugout before the game and he said absolutely not. I’m glad he gave it no credence but it also means that some trollish little dickhead beat writer has latched onto Kap’s BS.
Kaplan was serious? that spray tan juice has leaked into his brain. I knew it.
What’s the difference in replacement level between SS and 2B? I think it’s like 5 runs over a season, but I can’t recall.
Barney is older and probably more consistent at short, right now. But, I will hazard to guess that he doesn’t possess the range or arm that Castro does. Castro has the higher ceiling at SS and to me it’s way too soon to be moving him elsewhere. I believe Castro’s desire to play SS should be given credence since he’s the only player on your team who really matters going forward.

He was dead serious. Said he wrote it on his blog and someone asked Quade about it in the dugout before the game. They rolled the tape and then Kap said again that he thinks Barney is a “natural” SS who has played there in college and should go back to short.
Kudos on the HumanCentiPad reference, MO
I didn’t know FPM was talking about it, I’m sure that’s what inspired Kap’s blog. Makes sense, he doesn’t usually have an original thought.
Not to mention that Barney is not the guy you want in the starting line-up for a big market club despite his nice little batting average thus far.
What’s the over/under on whole long Barney stays good?
Kudos on the HumanCentiPad reference, MO
The defensive adjustment for WAR is .75 for SS and .25 for 2B, so it’s half a win over 700 plate appearances. However, a SS would be 5 runs better on defense so he wouldn’t be any less valuable at 2nd. I just don’t see why you’d move him to 2nd base when he’s the youngest person in the league. Just doesn’t make any sense, which is exactly why the headlines will soon read: Castro moves to 2nd, Barney takes over SS.
What’s the over/under on whole long Barney stays good?
3 weeks before regression hits him square in the ass.

I think Barney’s defense is good enough that he can be a valuable player even if he cools off a bit at the plate. The guy can play defense with the best of them.

Zambrano’s 89 mph fastball isn’t long for any rotation. You can get by with that velocity if you throw strikes, but Zambrano can’t. He makes too many mistakes (see Upton, Justin) because he doesn’t have very good control and that

Apparently, JA is getting raked by the local scribes for that pick. I wish I had audio of this.
watch the bears sign butterfingers Niles Paul because he has speed.
Thoughts on Paea, MO?
I only saw him play twice this year. Pretty classic Angelo DT pick, and, to be fair to JA, he’s had a lot of success over the years picking out good DT talent for the Cover-2. Paea is a bit light, but he’s really strong, plays with good leverage and has a very quick first step. Skill-wise, similar to Anthony Adams, but not nearly as bulky. He’s got the frame of a pass-rushing DT, but he’s very strong vs. the run.
watch the bears sign butterfingers Niles Paul because he has speed.
I’d like to see them sign Jackson or Rice.

Yeah, that’s a big part of it. Also that fish is regarded as healthier than other meats.
Mish, I’m wondering what you’ve heard people say they consider or think fish is. I grew up in the Midwest where fish isn’t nearly as popular as other parts of the country. I didn’t know anyone who didn’t consider it meat. If you went up to someone in Iowa and asked them what meat they wanted for dinner they’d immediately think about beef, pork, chicken, and fish. Iowa is like 187% white.
Meat, fish and poultry seem to be common classifications of white people food.

Pretty much every bar/non-ethnic restaurant in WI does a fish fry on Friday nights. Some places do a fish boil, which is surprisingly good if done right (you wouldn’t think so). And most places that do boils know how to do it well. They’re basically flash-boiled.

you hate bell peppers? wtf is wrong with you? (dying laughing)
And yes I know that cantaloupe aren’t vegetables. You know what I mean.
good job Z!
you hate bell peppers? wtf is wrong with you? (dying laughing)
I fucking despise them. I hate the way they smell. I don’t mind other peppers though.
And kickass cantaloupe from the meth capital in Iowa.
Don’t they call it muskmelon in IA?
And yes I know that cantaloupe aren’t vegetables. You know what I mean.
do you seriously dislike bell peppers? I’m speechless. I have no speech.
I fucking despise them. I hate the way they smell. I don’t mind other peppers though.
wut?
OK, let’s talk hot peppers.
I still can’t believe.. oh nevermind.
Fuck cantaloupes. They ruin 99% of fruit salads. I think bell peppers are the only vegetables I hate more (dying laughing)
I’m more surprised by the cantaloupe hatred. I can’t believe anyone wouldn’t like it fresh and ripe. The problem is that people often don’t let it ripen and it’s hard and lacking flavor.
I’m more surprised by the cantaloupe hatred.
Meh. Honey dew is the money melon.
greens, reds, yellows, all of them? seriously? sauteed in olive oil. really? It’s gold jerry! gold!
Meh. Honey dew is the money melon.
I hate all of the melon family – honeydew, muskmelon, watermelon, what have you.
I love watermelon and honey dew, gladly would eat cantaloupe. I eat most fruits, save dried ones like raisins.
I’m more surprised by the cantaloupe hatred. I can’t believe anyone wouldn’t like it fresh and ripe. The problem is that people often don’t let it ripen and it’s hard and lacking flavor.
I could do without that. Fruit has sugar, which is evil. Evil I say, except for ripe mango.
I hate all of the melon family – honeydew, muskmelon, watermelon, what have you.
An anti-melonite, I’ve never met your kind.
I fixed the title of this post
I fixed the title of this post

I fixed the title of this post
I think Z has gotten pretty lucky tonight.
Fuck cantaloupes. They ruin 99% of fruit salads. I think bell peppers are the only vegetables I hate more (dying laughing)
You obviously haven’t had a good cantaloupe. Not like a good cantaloupe is the equivalent of not liking fun, you fun-sucker.
I fixed the title of this post
(dying laughing) well done
I hate all of the melon family – honeydew, muskmelon, watermelon, what have you.
You’re worse than a fun-sucker.
yes!!!!!!!!!!! another HR for Soriano.

I’d disagree with you, but I pretty much said the exact same thing to Julie the other day with respect to pie crusts (dying laughing).
I fixed the title of this post
Well done. I tried making a UV post about fish but firefox crashed so I gave up.

Ok, I can’t hold out any longer. Don’t you like anything?
Jeez…Soriano is so lazy, that should’ve been a grand slam.
I’m more surprised by the cantaloupe hatred. I can’t believe anyone wouldn’t like it fresh and ripe. The problem is that people often don’t let it ripen and it’s hard and lacking flavor.
Yeah, if it’s not ripe it’s not any good. The same is true for most fruits though. Most people eat bananas several days before they’re ripe and they don’t even realize it.
Ok, I can’t hold out any longer. Don’t you like anything?
(dying laughing), I fucking love pie. Julie is the pie hater.
Yeah, if it’s not ripe it’s not any good. The same is true for most fruits though. Most people eat bananas several days before they’re ripe and they don’t even realize it.
I generally don’t like a most watery fruits/vegetables, at least if they’re raw or close to it. I don’t think many people roast canaloupe though (dying laughing)
Terrorists.
Exactly.
She doesn’t like pie crusts? Who doesn’t like pie crusts?
folks with diabeetus?
She doesn’t like pie crusts? Who doesn’t like pie crusts?
FWIW, replacement level pie crust is pretty terrible. And even a lot of homemade pie crusts are way too dry. I feel like I need a glass of water after eating anything made with my mom’s secret family pie crust.
folks with diabeetus?

folks with diabeetus?
Paula Dean has diabetes.

maybe you should roast your fruit/veggies, b. (dying laughing)
maybe you should roast your fruit/veggies, b. (dying laughing)
(dying laughing), I do. We eat tons of roasted squash.
I love me some green bananas
Green bananas are better for you, but I eat fruit when I need a sugar fix. (dying laughing)
Green bananas are better for you, but I eat fruit when I need a sugar fix. (dying laughing)
I actually like yucca
I generally don’t like a most watery fruits/vegetables, at least if they’re raw or close to it. I don’t think many people roast canaloupe though (dying laughing)
Fruit and vegetables are primarily water. I think apples are about 85% water, strawberries and melons around 92% water.
Alfonso Soriano has an ISO > OBP.
It’s hard to get good melons in Kansas. There’s about a week where you can get Muscatine melons here, but most of the rest are a waste.
Fruit and vegetables are primarily water. I think apples are about 85% water, strawberries and melons around 92% water.
Yeah, I just mean particularly watery ones (dying laughing). Stuff like cantaloupe or watermelon or cucumbers taste like they were soaked in rancid water or something to me. On a related note I hate restaurants that put cucumbers in their water without asking.
Alfonso Soriano has an ISO > OBP.
That takes some mad skill.
I’m excited for peach season to be starting soon here. I’m going to make a shit ton of peach pies.
Yeah, I just mean particularly watery ones (dying laughing). Stuff like cantaloupe or watermelon or cucumbers taste like they were soaked in rancid water or something to me. Toss it in a bowl a few times and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Drain it. Add a little cracked pepper and toss again. Snack time. (dying laughing)

We had peach-blueberry pies at our wedding. So good.
Pecan pie is one of my favorites too (pecans are by far my favorite nut) but it’s something I always fucked up at making. My custard is always too runny and or bubbles over and burns. My wife’s not a huge fan so it’s not something I’ve tried to make in a few years.
Offense decided to show up late.
I love cheesecake but it’s way too rich. I can never finish a slice.

Dammit mb, now I want to go cook some stuff and it’s too damn late (dying laughing)
I gave up dessert like 15 years ago. Haven’t had ice cream, cookies, pie, cake, candy bars, anything, in about 15 years. I’m serious. Probably why I’m still alive (dying laughing)
they just replayed Soriano’s HR off shilling in 2001 game 7
That game was great. Couldn’t believe that Rivera could blow a save.
Dammit mb, now I want to go cook some stuff and it’s too damn late (dying laughing)
You want to know what’s funny? Thinking about desserts has me thinking about butternut squash soup. (dying laughing) I must have had that soup sometime around when I had flourless chocolate cake or the white chocolate ice cream. Doesn’t matter though. I love the soup.
That game was great. Couldn’t believe that Rivera could blow a save.
It sucked. I was at game 5 at yankee stadium and was so wishing they would win it.

Kosuke barely got there. jesus
It sucked. I was at game 5 at yankee stadium and was so wishing they would win it.
Must have been crazy when BH-Kim blew up again. I don’t recall if he pitched Game 5 but I remember him getting shelled in consecutive games.
It sucked. I was at game 5 at yankee stadium and was so wishing they would win it.
I was thinking about Game 7 earlier this afternoon. That was probably the first and only time that most of the country was rooting for the Yankees.

Actually, I think I make Emeril’s recipe.
I can send you a recipe if you want.
That would be awesome.
http://www.emerils.com/recipe/8046/Roasted-Butternut-Squash-Soup
That’s basically what I make. I probably did steal that recipe, but I can’t remember for sure.
I have Bittman’s book, there’s probably one in there. Maybe in the Trotter book too.
You’ve had some health issues, haven’t you? It is probably best that you stay away from that stuff.
not really, just drank too much. It’s tapered off. I’m basically healthy. I’ve never had high blood sugar. High blood pressure, yes, but that goes down when I drop the weight. I’m back down to a healthy weight again.
I haven’t made this recipe before, but it’s close enough to the one I used to make a lot: http://recipes.epicurean.com/recipe/16347/blue-cheese-and-apple-soup.html
Surprisingly good soup.
I can’t believe AZ isn’t pinch hitting for Branyan here

it was awesome. after the game all the fans were high-fiving every single cop and security person in yankee stadium while Sinatra’s “New York” was playing on the PA. Never experienced anything like it. The whole stadium was shaking after than HR too, and after Soriano’s game winning single. goose bumps.
Now I’m hungry for soup.

I’ll be making soup tomorrow, AC.

and game 4 when Tino did the same thing. then Jeter ended it in extras with a HR. Man, that was an exciting time to be in NY, but sad too. you could still smell the stench of ground zero. the weather was unseasonably warm for late Oct/early Nov. That one squinty white guy did hit a triple though. So there’s diversity at work.
Tried something else:
http://www.obstructedview.net/unobstructed-views/mlb/derrek-lee-talks-about-cubs-fans.html
I tried looking for the “help” stuff but couldn’t find anything. Mostly I just wanted to figure out how to set up quote boxes and hyperlinks. Feel free to re-edit the format. Interesting interview though.
Also tried to insert multiple tags, but I don’t know how to use the editor correctly and it made it into an amalgam tag.
D-Lee wasn’t too specific though was he, RC. I know other Cub players in the past have gotten racist mail when Dusty was there, and we haven’t heard about it since. I wonder how many other teams get it and to what extent.

That was a strange exchange when it happened. But I can’t judge too much since I once helped set off a blog war by taking offense to a single tweet.

But I can’t judge too much since I once helped set off a blog war by taking offense to a single tweet.
I just think it’s silly to block someone from your twitter feed. Especially for a journalist. I’m not a huge fan of the site I linked and rarely check it out, but I actually agree with him here. The only reason you’d refer to McGehee as a former Cub is to start shit. It wouldn’t be much different than constantly referring to Johan Santana as a former Astro or Jeff Bagwell as a former Red Sox.
Miles was obviously trying to draw attention to the fact that McGehee was given away by the Cubs sine they didn’t protect him on their roster. It ignores the fact that not only did the Cubs have Ramirez at 3rd base, but also that McGehee wasn’t very good at the time. Through the age of 25 in the minors he had a career .740 OPS. Not bad, but there was no way anybody could expect he’d do has in the big leagues. If the Cubs kept McGehee and traded Ramirez while McGehee aged as you’d expect, we’d hear all about how the Cubs traded Ramirez so they could play this shitty 3rd baseman.
Maybe I’m nitpicking, but that stuff annoys me.
I agree, but trying to look at it from Miles’ perspective since he has earned the benefit of the doubt, I can see where he might be coming from. As a beat writer covering the Cubs for decades, he probably first met McGeehee when he was first signed/drafted in 2003, or the following spring. He probably knew him as a Cub during four or five spring trainings, and not just in September 2008.
But I agree it’s probably said with the intent to stir a little shit, which is surprising from Bruce.

I didn’t get the sense that Bruce was trying to sensationalize the tragedy of losing Casey McGehee, and while it may be a bit of a reach to call him an ex-Cub, as SK mentions, he was a part of the organization for years.
I thought it was a slight over-reaction on OMC’s part, and I’m not 100% sure why Bruce blocked him over one reactionary tweet, but that’s how some folks roll on Twitter. I get called an idiot pretty much every day on Twitter, so I can imagine Bruce and the other beat guys get it way worse.
To Steve Rosenbloom’s credit, he’s never blocked me and I give him more crap on Twitter than anyone else besides Jose Canseco.

I’ll take your (SK and 424) words for it. It just seem Sullivanish of Miles do block someone over something silly like that.
Ooh, look who commented on that post!
So which of you guys is Dick Cheese then?

I seem to remember OMC calling out Miles on something before this incident. I could be wrong and it isn’t something I have time to look up, but I don’t think this was an isolated incident.
I’m going to go write a whole long post defending my GOOD FRIEND Bruce Miles now…

Bruce Miles.

Fixed.
Panda —–> hand surgery, out 4-6 weeks
I’m not sure who Panda is, but it’s not Castro is it?
Nevermind. Pablo Sandoval. I was thinking Cubs and I remembered Castro got hit on the hand last night. Then I started to think there was literally no reason to watch this team for the next 4-6 weeks.
