  • Anthony Rizzo Debut game thread and live chat

In case you hadn't heard, Anthony Rizzo is making his debut with the Cubs today. Since this is probably the lone highlight of the season, let's do a live chat!

In case you weren't around last time, or your memory is as bad as mine, let me remind you

    Mini post about posting:

IF YOUR COMMENT DOES NOT APPEAR RIGHT AWAY, DON'T PANIC

CoverItLive kind of sucks in that the chat moderator has to approve any commenters as legit before their comments can appear without moderation.

He's got a two day head start on you, which is more than he needs. He's got friends in every town and village from here to the Sudan, he speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see him again. With any luck, he's got the grail already.

      @ pinetar:

Too busy watching Arroyo throw a no-hitter.

Weird game for Z. 5 runs, all unearned, all in the first. (Also, I’m trying out a new username).

Fun with somewhat small sample sizes

Yonder Alonso has a .254/.325/.345 line in 281 PAs this year, good for a .297 wOBA

Fun with very small sample sizes

Anothy Rizzo has a .500/.500/.750 line in 4 PAs this year, good for a .535 wOBA

So whoever predicted he would have a wOBA over .400 is right (dying laughing)

Exhibit A as to why Sullivan is a fucking horrendous journalist:

Sveum inserted Rizzo into the No. 3 hole ahead of Alfonso Soriano, moving Bryan LaHair down to No. 5. Whether he’ll stay there is hard to determine after conflicting statements from Sveum and Hoyer.

“I wouldn’t want to goof around with it, no matter if left-handers are out there or not,” Sveum said. “I don’t think it’s something you want to tinker with or change day-to-day, or anything like we’ve had to do with our lineups. … If that’s what we project as our future, there’s no better time than to get him started now.”

Hoyer said he’d “be surprised if he’s etched in stone” in the No. 3 hole.

“I’m sure he’s going to move around in the lineup quite a bit,” he said. “That’s where he’s starting tonight, but he could be anywhere over the next few days.”

It’s pretty clear that Sveum’s comments are less about lineup construction, and more about Rizzo not being platooned, and vice versa with Hoyer’s comments. There are no fucking “conflicting statements” here. There are two people talking about the same person in two different ways. But fucking Sullivan, pouting like a child because this FO has been wise enough to shut out his biased, hackneyed probing, decides to manufacture a controversy in print.

Here’s a hint, Paul: the reason they don’t tell you shit, is because you pull shit like this, you pint-sized piece of shit.

      @ Mish:
Yeah, he has movement on all his pitches. Crazy movement at times. He often doesn’t know where it’s going, but managed to throw enough strikes to get by. After Alex Gordon struckout to lead off the game you could see him shaking his head to Yuni who was walking to the plate as if to say “I got nothing.” He then said something to Moustakas as he was entering the on-deck circle. He fooled some hitters, but fooling Royals hitters isn’t necessarily an achievement. Fooling Gordon is. He’s a good hitter. He had them off balance all night. I was impressed with his pitches. Not so impressed with the command. He missed the catcher’s target regularly and that’s going to hurt him the longer he’s in the league. We’ve said it ever since the Cubs acquired him for DeRosa, but if he could ever learn better command of his pitches he could be a damn good pitcher. More than likely, in my opinion anyway, he’s a late-inning reliever and probably a pretty good one. The wife is sick so we’re not making the game today, which we’d planned to do as a family. Also too hot to take the children anyway. It was hot each of the last two nights, but not that bad because I’ve been out of the sun and there’s been the occasional breeze. Day game today and it’s going to be hotter than hell.

I sat next to this Royals season ticket holder each of the last two games and he’s about my age and we had some good conversations. I asked him about Escobar because the guy can play SS. He makes it look so damn easy. I was wondering about his bat. The numbers weren’t there last year, but they’re there this year. Apparently the Royals fixed something in his swing and he’s optimistic moving forward.
