Fukudome —————-> Indians (UPDATED)

In News And Rumors by dmick89205 Comments

Multiple reports claim that the Cubs are close to sending Kosuke Fukudome to the Cleveland Indians for two prospects (according to Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes, it’s an upper level and lower level prospect, one a pitcher and another a position player. The Cubs well send cash to cover most if not all of Fukudome’s salary.

Supposedly Fukudome has waived his NTC for the deal. Good for him – why would he want to stick around? He still gets paid, and he gets another shot at the playoffs.

I’m glad the Cubs sent money along, because they need prospects more than they need money right now.

More details as the deal develops.

Update 1:

The Indians are paying $775,00 of Fukudome’s remaining salary, so the Cubs are sending around $4m.

Apparently “upper level” meant AAA, not upper level in prospect quality.

Update 2:

The Hobbitton Press says that the prospects are AAA RH RP Carlton Smith and A OF Abner Abreu. Neither of them are ranked in BA’s top 30 Indians prospects, so it’s not much. I wouldn’t be surprised if they made it into the Cubs pathetic rankings though (dying laughing), at least for the next 3 weeks before the draft signings are announced and they get knocked out again.

In return, they’ll get Triple-A right-handed reliever Carlton Smith, who has a 4.50 earned-run average, and Class-A outfielder Abner Abreu, who is hitting .244.

    I
Post updated
I could easily see Abreu being a top 10 Cubs prospect entering next season. I’d actually be surprised if he isn’t. He’s not that good, though he has shown flashes, but the Cubs system sucks ass. Considering his age, you may even be able to justify ranking him in the top 5.

Soriano issue is that he has little to no value at all while Z’s issue is that despite his value, teams aren’t going to take him because he’s nuts.

Someone did some research a couple years ago showing that 2 WAR is what teams are willing to give up for chemistry and Zambrano happens to be worth about 2 WAR. So the Cubs would have to pay his entire contract, which makes no sense unless they believe his absence would improve the team more than that.

Not sure what the number is but if it’s close to 50% I have to believe a team would go for the trade. The problem might be that Hendry is asking for too much in terms of prospect return. Either way the writing is on the wall and I think both Z and Soriano are gone before Sept 1st or they are gone in the off-season.

I saw this play last night and thought it was a dead ball as the on-deck guy, while directing traffic, isn’t technically part of the play. But the trajectory of the ball was going to get past both the catcher and the pitcher backing up the plate anyway. Guess it was a judgment call for the ump that it wasn’t deliberate attempt to obstruct a thrown ball, but the only hangup for me is that the guy who knocked the ball awry wasn’t even a baserunner or batter…

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Dave Hyde, Vince Young has been the Dolphins’ No. 2 target at quarterback behind Kyle Orton.

Young will be released by the Titans later this afternoon, which could play havoc with any leverage the Broncos may have enjoyed in trade talks. With Kevin Kolb almost certain to land in Arizona by the end of the day, Denver may be forced to accept a fourth-rounder for Orton.

We don’t have a starting caliber C unless Heitmann is full strength. We have depth in several players, but it’s still a need.

Who steps into the NT/DE spot if there’s an injury? Jean-Francois? Unless I’m forgetting someone, there’s not good depth there. Same with OLB.

At age 25, Juan Pierre and his 1.6 WAR finished 10th in the MVP voting. Any chance Campana ascends to achieve the lofty greatness of Juan Pierre?
He has 4 hits on 11 bunt attempts. Not terrible, and a really small sample size in any case.
I guess it was a misperception. I couldn’t recall a single successful bunt attempt. But I’ve missed a few games here and there.

Baseball should implement a roaming leadoff man lineup. Campy is really only useful if he leads off an inning. In an RBI situation, it seems like he’s going to be a liability.

I’d rather have a guy who draws a ton of walks (like Kosuke). Campy could be brought in to pinch-run if need be.

Yeah, I guess when you’re a catcher you have to have a fairly good arm to gun down base-stealers, but as soon as you show you can’t hit sliders, you better learn how to throw one to stay in pro baseball.

I’m just wondering if his legs have taken his power with them. It makes some sense if he came in after the off-season recharged, whacked 10 homers in the first couple months, then the fatigue set back in.

His ISO is .086 this month. So the doubles aren’t coming fast enough.

Or, bloop one between the second baseman and right field.

Or more likely, strike out on a ball in the dirt.
