I hope you're happy, beat writers. I hope you find some sick pleasure in running another Cubs legend out of town by crucifying him with broken prose. Maybe you live in some alternate universe where it's okay to violate a man's privacy and print things like his baseball stats and the lack of influence he has on a team's ability to win, but I expect better from the society I live in. But my own values of treating others with dignity and grace have no consequence in the cutthroat media machine in Chicago. Nope. Blake DeWitt is no longer a Chicago Cub. Well, technically he was designated for assignment, but we all know what that means: banished from the hallowed halls of Wrigley because the Tribune, the Sun Times, the Daily Herald, Fangraphs, Baseball Reference, Yahoo! Sports, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and other sour-hearted media bullies of their ilk carried out their vendetta against another hardworking go-getter. They all apparently feel entitled to print whatever they want about the man, no matter who it hurts, no matter how deep the blade of reckless truth may cut.

What really sickens me is that the Cubs are trashing him as well. In their official press release, they pull no punches. The weak of stomach are advised to turn away:

DeWitt, 26, batted .265 (61-for-230) with 11 doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI in 121 games with the Cubs last year, his first full season with the club after being acquired from the Dodgers on July 31, 2010. He is a career .260 hitter (283-for-1,087) in 404 major league games with the Dodgers (2008-10) and the Cubs (2010-present).

The man has a family. Have these people no decency? How is DeWitt supposed to find a job when his former team spews bile about his personal performance? Disgusting. I can only hope the team, the media, and fellow Cubs fans can learn their lesson, finally, that it does no one any good to pay attention to how well any of these players do on the field. That's not what this is about. It's about heart, and I'm pretty sure Blake DeWitt has one. I wish I could say the same thing about everyone in Chicago.

Is There a Cubs Game Today?

No.

Fun but not funny

I just can't laugh today. Not without Blake.

Fangraphs really does a number on him. They post his wOBA and his projected WAR for next year. No mention of the beard. At. All.
    Typical.

They’ll be ESPN before you know it.

Yeah dick. I know you are in mourning over the loss of DeWitt, but the least you could have done is mention that the new edition of DFP. Instead SK and I were stuck talking about mullets in the old thread.

SK, what was the issue you were having with the mobile version? Last night when I made the switch the image sizes were automatically changed on my iphone. However, I wasn’t able to get the home page to show up in the desktop version. If I click on an article it went to the mobile version. It was late so I gave up, but will look into it sometime today or tomorrow.

I didn’t have an issue with the mobile site – that was someone else. I haven’t been on the mobile site lately.

Just this morning it seemed like the format changed a bit and avatars weren’t showing up and images weren’t displaying. But I can see the avatars now.

Try posting an image now. I think the image you tried to post in the last thread couldn’t show up because of hotlinking. That’s all I can think of. Yeah, the avatars are back. I just wasn’t going to fuck with it last night.

Mobile users, please let us know how the mobile version works.

The comment text could use some embiggening, though not that much

Bruce Miles suggested that Blakey could end up accepting a demotion and coming as a non-roster invitee to ST. (dying laughing). Though I guess he knows the mediocre level of competition he’d be facing here.

I was having issues with the mobile on Droid X2. The frame for the comments wouldn’t “fit” to my screen. The old version would “fit” so I wouldn’t have to scroll. The new one I have to scroll to center the comments on my screen. Then I can’t zoom.

Avatars showing up on mobile now. Well done!

Your “post comment” button on the desktop version needs a bit of reformatting as the “t” in “comment” is being snipped off. Not a big deal if you don’t care about feng shui though. Plus I guess you should re-implement GBTS’ special links so he can come out of the fetal position.

I think I’m going to sit this season out. I think a 1.5-year-old + 3 hours of patient sitting would be a disaster. I’ll find a babysitter if I get WS tickets.

I’m wondering if it’s just a cache issue for me, but when people go to obstructedview.net on their mobile phone, do they get the mobile version? I keep getting the desktop, but then when I click an article I get the mobile version.

You can also use the mobile version as a stand alone app on the iphone.

    @ mb21:
I get the mobile first, but I think the mobile theme toggle button doesn’t show up on the desktop version until you actually clear the cache etc. On our page it detects that the user is mobile and will have that toggle button no matter what. I just remember this from the last time I accidentally hit the toggle button and had to spend a few minutes trying to get the mobile theme back (dying laughing)

So I’m not sure if you fixed that or not, or think it’s even necessary.

He was Cutler’s QB coach in Denver. Actually, I think the Bears wanted to interview him for the OC before Martz if I remember correctly but he went to Seattle with Carroll because I think he’s a USC guy.

I’m lucky if I get to Chicago once a year. This is not one of those years I’ll be going to several games when I’m home. One nostalgic whiff of the troughs will get me through 2012.

I brought my son to a game at the Cell when he was a little older than 2. He fell asleep.

Josh, Fangraphs is using WordPress 3.3.1, which is the newest version and the same one we’re using. So that comments vote has to work. I’ll try it out and if I have trouble I’ll contact David Appleman.

That was the problem I ran into, was how to change anything. The only options are that you can choose to have comments collapse after a certain number of negative votes. Seems like that function could be hijacked to be the highlighting function. I really don’t know php well enough to understand how the plugin inserts itself, let alone how to move it around.

(dying laughing) Yeah, I should have used the rhetorical question font. I was being a smartass. Serious question though, what’s the deal with the compensation? Has that been resolved, anybody know?

Okay, I see…it just didn’t refresh immediately and auto-embed the comment after the edit. Weird.
