Practice game recap

The Cubs pounded the rangers 11-4. Soriano, Mather, Jackson, and Ian Stewart all homered. Matt Garza threw 81 pitches in five innings, but could have gone deeper had Darwin Barney not committed two errors in the fourth inning. Marcos Mateo left the game with an injury and there's no word on how serious it could be. They were looking at his elbow though, so it's probably not good.

Is there a Cubs game today?

Indeed. Jeff Samardzija gets the start against the Rockies today at 3pm. Len and Mick have the call on Gameday. From what I've gathered from the interwebs, Keith Law should be there to see Samardzija pitch today.

Today in horrifying news

This news about former number one pick Matt Bush is horrible. He was driving drunk and hit a 72-year old man on a motorcycle and fled the scene. When the police later apprehended him he blew a .180. According to the local NBC affiliate, Bush's SUV ran over the victim's head, and he only survived because he was wearing a helmet. (Side point – everytime I see someone on a motorcycle not wearing a helmet or in shorts, I just want to Force-push them over for being fucking idiots).

Not to be outdone, Sox of various colors reliever Bobby Jenks was also arrested for a DUI hit-and-run last night.

I know it's not baseball's job to tell these guys what to do when they're not actively doing baseball job related things, but Jesus.

Opening Day starter to be announced today

I suspect that whoever it is, his name will rhyme with Brian Hempster.

Keith Law on various Cubs prospects

Keith Law has seen a Cubs game or two in the past week, and chatted about Cubs prospects. The highlights

  • Vogelbach has lost 20-25 pounds, and looked overmatched, with a slow bat and poor recognition of off-speed pitches. I don't know who he was facing though, he's young enough that he's going to be way down in the system so I'm not too concerned yet. Everyone knows he still has a long way to go
  • Klaw loves Jeimer Candelario. He doesn't have great bat speed but his swing is "simple" and has a good feel for hitting
  • Klaw thinks the current CBA changes wrt international players will be in place as long as Selig and Reinsdorf are around. I don't think they're going anywhere even after they've departed this plane.
  • Hayden Simpson couldn't even hit 90 on the gun earlier this week. Klaw thinks he's donezo, and that his velocity spike that led to the Cubs drafting him was a fluke.
  • Klaw on Samardzija: "Have heard it's been an unbelievable transformation – like the light bulb just went on. It's just spring, but I've seen him in past springs where I wouldn't have given him a snowball's chance of big league value, so there's at least something different there."
  • He lists Baez (who he's very high on), Candelario, Dunston Jr., and Cuban OF Yasiel Balaguer as players to be excited about in the low minors. He thinks Baez ends up as a 3B, though he won't rule out SS

40-man roster update

Andy Sonnanstine was outrighted to AAA yesterday, so the Cubs have two roster spots open. They'll probably go to DeWitt and Mather.

Is there Wrigley Talk Friday today?

Oh, indeed. If could be at either 1 or 2 pm today. Those crafty WTFers like to keep us on our toes.

The report states that he has previous DUI charges in California and Arizona

Geez. That article is full of FAIL. Mentions that he hit a pole earlier in the day and how he doesn’t see this as a life changing event (almost killing someone).

Although since it is Florida, he could just say it was self defense and not be arrested.

Also, wrt The Wire quotes. Please keep them spoiler free 🙂 Just saw S01 E01 and E02 last night.

Good thing we have a spoiler tag then (dying laughing). Though I don’t think most quotes are particularly spoilery in and of themselves.

In case you didn’t read every word yesterday, you can spoiler-hide things with

Someone put the first part of the Snot story yesterday, but I thought I’d thought I’d quote this line because I find it funny. I have a friend who says “This is America” (Cardinals fan) a lot.

I remember not finding it all that annoying. I have no idea how it’s set up now. I don’t remember much beyond 3rd edition. All the stuff with feats and minor moves and that shit seemed too complicated for me, and I hated rules lawyering in a game that you pretty much just made up as you went along anyway.

I really liked The Bad Place because it was so weird. Lightning and Strangers were good. I think the ’80s was his pinnacle. Maybe he was on cocaine like SK, or something. Funny story, I made it a point to read all of his books when I was a kid. Except for a few out of prints and anything written after about 2000, I pretty much have. From BA today

“If everything works out as the Cubs’ hope, at some point in the future, Javier Baez will be snaring grounders at Wrigley Field and firing them across the diamond to first baseman Dan Vogelbach.

For now, the top two picks in the Cubs’ 2011 draft are getting ready on the back fields of the club’s facility in Mesa, Ariz., as they ready to head to low Class A Peoria together.”

While Baez and Voglebach appear ticketed for low Class A, righthander Dillon Maples, a 14th-round pick out of a Southern Pines, N.C. high school who signed last August for $2.5 million, is not going to be joining them anytime soon.

i find that interesting. Really excited for baez.

These days, instead of your thaco going down, your base attack bonus goes up, which is largely a function of AC starting at 10 and going up instead of down. It’s just a different way of expressing the same basic concept, but for some reason, people have a much harder time with it if the lower number is the better AC. I don’t mind third edition, though I miss some of the flexibility of second, with called shots and the like (I also miss the fact that there was a reason for me to own a d12 back then, as now it collects dust because I don’t play barbarian characters).

Not surprised at all that Dempster is the opening day starter, he would have been my guess before ST

GBTS, what’s the extent of Sapp’s liability with regards to federal whistleblower protections over this Shockey thing? Being as he’s an NFL employee, if Shockey is actually the whistleblower (and Florio says he has credible league sources that say Shockey was not involved in the investigation in any way), then case seems clear, i.e. Sapp committed a federal crime, and the NFLN abetted it by allowing him to do it on-air. But if Shockey is not the whistleblower–as it now appears he is not–what’s Sapp and the NFLN’s exposure here?

    The Band
    The Velvet Underground
    The Clash
Iggy & the Stooges (Ron Asheton version)
    The Drive-By Truckers

Even I think its ridiculous that 3 of those 5 bands only lasted about 3 years. What the fuck is wrong with me? Anyway, fighting it out to knock one of these out on any given day:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Beatles, The Hold Steady, The Dexateens, The New York Dolls, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Otis Redding w/the Stax House Band, & Big Brother & the Holding Company.

He didn’t get a lot of chances to block because Moore liked to use him in the slot, but Clark blocks just fine when he’s asked to block. How do you think Edgerrin James used to get the corner so often? Not because Marvin “No Contact Sport” Harrison was out there blocking. It’s not just about weight, but if losing weight made him a better player and made him more valuable then I think we can safely say he’d do just about any thing possible to lose weight. What I’m saying is that I don’t think excess weight is necessarily going to hamper anyone’s career just as I don’t think losing weight is suddenly going to improve anyone. In fact, gaining weight can have a negative impact and I would assume for some of the larger players that losing weight could as well. It’s why I don’t like the idea of teams taking someone like Vogelbach. The dude can hit a baseball a long way for someone his age, but it’s only going to be more difficult for him to lose weight as he ages. The Cubs drafted someone who was a great hitter and they’ve had him lose a significant amount of weight. While that’s undoubtedly healthy for Vogelbach, it does not mean he’s going to be as good or better. It means he’ll be different than the player they drafted.

I bet I’ve heard of ’em! Especially since we seem to be cultural twinsies. I love that you list the Buzzcocks and the Undertones. I am now kicking myself for leaving off X, The MInutemen, Big Star, The Replacements, and Yo La Tengo, any of whom could end up in my first tier on any given day. And the Cramps. ooh, and The Gun club! and…and….

I tried to limit my list to “Bands” just to keep it more do-able. Lots of the folks you have up there-especially in the Presely, Dylan, Bo Diddley, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Link Wray vein- would have made mine otherwise. And Patti Smith, Howlin’ Wolf. And James Luther Dickinson, the father of the two brothers in the North Missisippi All Stars.

The All Stars are as close as I get to really loving any jam band, tho I like a few Dead and Little Feat records a lot. Anyone who was digging the SRV talk here the other day should give the North Mississippi All Stars a listen. Amazing rhythmic interplay and total guitar genius. I went and saw them last november in Iowa City and they melted my face. It was a show in a bar and I kept thinking that i’d go get a beer in a minute, didn’t manage to pull myself away until the end of the set.

I hear what you are saying. I was just saying that I don’t think we can attribute his recent struggles or slow bat to him losing weight. It’s quite possible that it has but I think we need more information to make that assessment. Common sense tells me that losing weight means losing fat. Which should result in a faster bat. Unless he lost 20-25 lbs of muscle and kept the fat, I just dont’ see how this weight loss contributes to his struggles. I guess I would just like to hear from someone other than KLaw to support his opinion.

Shit, It’s nice to see someone else who isn’t repeating just “Stones, Beatles, but Greatful Dead is better”. I prefer Dylan to both, I used to rock Velvet Underground. The Clash are probably my favorite early punk band. There will always be a place for the Beasties and the Sex Pistols on my shelf.

I like that hip-hop is represented here. I don’t like Run-DMC or Public Enemy. I haven’t heard much but it’s just not as good as other stuff out at the time. 3rd Bass, NWA, Ice-T, and KRS-One are the best of that decade. Tupac writes some great stuff too.

As far as Jam Bands go, I like Gov’t Mule alot, along with Les Claypool’s Flying Frog Brigade. Another band right up that alley is the Contential Drifters. Sort of Alt-Folk Country, but some really good stuff. Hard as hell to find though.

Semi-local band from Tuscaloosa who started out like Southern 3-guitar punk rock, and calmed down a little later, but had great songwriting and attitude all the way through. Really really good free record for download here, that catches them about halfway between the out of control early stuff and the later acoustic material: http://www.skybucket.com/media/dexateens/

I do like Gov’t. Mule, tho more to see live than on record. I worked sound for them a few times and really enjoyed it a lot.

Once I got over my punk rock purity phase, I pretty much don’t discount any genres. The core of what I like the best tho is basic rock and roll with smart lyrics and a bad attitude.

You’d do well to watch Another State of Mind. It follows the 1982 tour of punk bands Social Distortion and Better Youth Organization. BYO is a really interesting story (and quite a good outfit) while it gives an early look into the chaotic career of singer/songwriter Mike Ness. BYO was actually headlining the tour. I believe they also meet up with Minor Threat late in the documentary.

It gives a lot of insight into the early Cal-Punk scene.

If he gets the out, you’re done, if he doesn’t, and they don’t score, he has to keep pitching. It could create some interesting strategies.

Eh, I don’t know. There are already injury rules in place and no one really exploits them. If that was the case you’d see a lot more faked injuries when a guy is being lit up and no one is warmed up enough in the bullpen.

But when that happens they take their sweet ass time so a reliever can get ready. The catcher goes to the mound slowly. Then the pitching coach crawls to the mound and after 15 seconds the infielders come in. Then they call and order a pizza and the umpire tells them to go back to the dugout.

That would happen considerably less if you allowed one change per inning and there would be no incentive to stall as managers do now.
