    cerulean,

I think that the bigger issue is that you have to wait ten days to recall a player you’ve optioned to the minors, which would make it a bit more difficult to handle mechanically. There’s also the human element to consider.Even though these guys are constantly on the road, being constantly switched between teams and cities might be mentally difficult to cope with for some guys.

The ten days are a wrinkle for sure. However, the human element can be dealt with. There is this perception of “being sent down” that is a reprimand, an indictment, sending a guy down because he has underperformed at the big league level. I think that is far more destructive.

If instead it is a planned bullpen strategy, say where three pitchers rotate five days in the majors to learn and practice their craft that they hone in the minors, and “demotion” is automatic no matter the level of performance—because there is always something to work on—then it just becomes part of the process of getting into the big leagues and not a sink-or-swim scenario. Let’s call these pitchers a manifold because four- and five-man rotations would be feasible over one or two bullpen spots.

    My bullpen:

    Closer/Fireman
    Fireman/Setup
    Setup/Fireman
    Specialist/Middle
    Middle/Longman
    Middle/Manifold
    Middle/Manifold
    Special Assistant to Joe

    That’s my eight-man bullpen.

    Bryant’s exit velocities today:

89 mph (triple down the line)
    105 mph (410-foot homer)
    107 mph (444-foot homer)
    106 mph (double)
    105 mph (403-foot homer)

That’s one of the best offensive games I’ve ever seen and there’s a chance he could bat again if the Cubs bullpen does him a favor.

    cerulean:
19 total bases for Bryant. Not bad.

I can’t add, apparently. That should be 17. But I guess the triple was rescored a double, so 16 TB. That’s disappointing. It’s only a historical record.

    Rizzo the Rat,

It was labeled a triple when I first saw the replay. They’ve relabeled it since.

On that last homerun Kasper says, “I don’t want no stinkin’ cycle!” He too thought it was a triple.

I missed that inning. What call did the Cubs challenge? Game day says call on field overturned by the Cubs, but it still showed Baez as out at 2nd.

    For the most wins:
Giants losing by four in the second.
Rangers losing by one in the ninth—3–1 count, nobody out, man on first, game delayed.

    For the division:
Cardinals losing by four in the ninth.
    Pirates lost.

Syndergaard had an even worse day that Arrieta—5 runs in 3 innings.

    josh:
How is no one ever hit 3 HR and 2 2Bs before? That seems unpossible.

If you are going to fail English, fail English.

And yes, it does seem unpossible—I am skeptical even if it’s true.

I believe that it’s never happened. It just seems like it should have happened. Then again 3HR in a game isn’t all that common to begin with.

    josh,

Babe Ruth only hit three home runs in a game only twice in his career, the second being his final season with the Braves. He also did it twice in the World Series, which is a record.
