Cubs close to trading Alfonso Soriano to the Yankees again

In News And Rumors by dmick8946 Comments

I’m mostly busy tonight, but wanted to put something up because it seems like there’s a very good chance Alfonso Soriano will be traded to the Yankees tonight.

More to come…

Nate was right about Olt and Jackson. I know GW and I already talked about how similar those two are so it shouldn’t be all that surprising. It was interesting to see just how similar they are and where they differ. I plan to look at this a bit differently tomorrow.

damn, that was a lucky guess, but I was comparing their numbers last week. I think Brett Jackson sucks, and I’m not really excited about Olt at all. I hope they trade him for pitching in the offseason. I’d rather have Baez or Bryant at 3B in the future.

    @ Nate:
I’m excited about Olt, but also even more cautioned by his huge strikeout rate. Prior to 2012 I think Jackson was a very good prospect. Not so anymore. I wouldn’t mind the Cubs shopping Olt for a pitcher. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they did it.

Weird. I never would have considered that it had to be done in Chicago and I’m still not even sure why. Is this something that is filed with MLB? A law office? Does Ronnie Woo Woo guard these kinds of documents?

The responses from the manager and the Cubs players re: Soriano’s impending trade are a testament to what a good teammate and guy he is.

    I’m sad.

I’d think in this day and age that there are a dozen different ways this could be handled. I’ve taken pictures of documents with my iPhone and emailed them. Theo needs to hire Alvin Yellon to run these kinds of errands. He’d be thrilled to do it.

I don’t think it does. I think he just needed to Soriano to sign off, got that done, and now has no reason to be in Arizona anymore. Going home to be with his family and/or work more efficiently

I think the tweet is out of context or at least not complete because it’s 140 characters. He probably already had everything notarized and sent to league offices and is just taking the form back to Chicago because everything needs a hard copy in storage.

it slays me seeing the chicago media talk about what a great guy Soriano is. They literally spilled as much ink bashing the guy from 07-12 as I spilled sperm in my teenage years.

That makes more sense and was what I figured, but then you said waiver in hand. Totally fucked with what made sense to me. (dying laughing)

    @ dylanj:
I think things did change after Thoyer took over. Soriano got a lot of positive coverage last year. I don’t think it makes up for some of the shit they said over the years, but it’s been due coverage for Soriano. I’m happy about that.

I think Theo is a better communicator than Hendry was and Theo did not like the idea of the media bashing someone who was such a great teammate. That’s my guess, but it changed last year. Still 5 years of bullshit, which does piss me off.

And the fans. They became as guilty as the media. I’m at least glad he gets to leave to this rather than the venom from a couple years ago.

I was just reading the comments of the game thread at rlyw.net. One of the commenters mentioned the low level prospect. “I’m saying CC.” (dying laughing) Well done.

Oooh, that might actually not suck too much as long as the Yankees paid most of the salary (dying laughing)

I just thought it was hilarious that he (jokingly) called CC a low level pitching prospect. Cracked me up. Wish I had thought of it, but I think CC is still better than I know a lot of Yankees fans do.

WGN is just doing a little thingy on the I-Cubs and they interviewed Vitters who said, about all the injuries this year: I learned how to take care of my body.

That doesn’t always matter when it comes to injuries.

    That’s a scary good comparison.

Is it weird that all the cubs top prospects – even the ones acquired by the new regime – have huge issues with k rates?

Speaking of, Baez apparently hit two more home runs and had two more strikeouts tonight. (dying laughing).

“You can’t fill that kind of void as a person or the guy on the field,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. “I know this impacted a lot of people on the field. There were some pretty emotional guys in BP and after.”

Sveum said the entire team said goodbye to their veteran leader in a group send-off after the game.

“After the game we got everybody together to say our good-byes,” Sveum said. “It was emotional for all of us. You don’t usually gather teams together that often when people get traded to say your goodbyes. That just shows you the kind of person he is.”

Alfonso Soriano is close to returning to the New York Yankees, and Soriano flew from Phoenix to New York after the Chicago Cubs’ game Thursday night in case a trade is finalized.

“I talked to my agent this afternoon, and he told me we have to wait,” Soriano said. “He called me again [during the game] and said it is 90-99 percent, ‘So if you want to go to New York, you can go.’ Otherwise I would have to wait for tomorrow morning.”

    Shut me right up.

Soriano obvioulsy read the comments yesterday

“I always said the money is not the issue,” he said. “Money can make you happy. You can buy anything, but the most important thing is to be a human being.

Only five remaining players were on the Cubs major league roster when Jim Hendry was general manager: Jeff Samardzija, Starlin Castro, James Russell, Darwin Barney and Welington Castillo.

I guess this makes F7 the longest serving Cub. Mind. Blown.

I also guess the 2014 payroll is currently Pirates-esque (I know they have to pay some of Soriano, but still).

    @ Suburban kid:
I’d consider it to be Castro because he came up for good in May 2010. Samardzija didn’t come up for good until September 2010. I can see why others would say Samardzija, though.

    It’s even more mind-blowing that it’s Castro.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reports (via Twitter) that the Yankees will pay $6.8MM of the roughly $24.5MM remaining on Soriano’s contract — $1.8MM in 2013 and $5MM in 2014. The Cubs will choose from a short list of pitching prospects that includes Corey Black, Tommy Kahnle and perhaps one other player, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds (via Twitter) that the Cubs are leaning towards Black, confirming a report from Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com.

Cubs to get pitching prospect from list of Black and a couple other guys.
