    dmick89,

So you think there would have been room for Contreras (who also has spent a bunch of time in LF) with Schwarber on the roster?

Yes, but I think Montero would have been dealt by now. Soler probably doesn’t get injured at that same exact time if Schwarber is healthy, but Soler is Soler so he’d have spent some time on the DL and Contreras could have gotten some playing time in LF then. Then again, I actually think Schwarber would have ended up hitting lefties well enough that a platoon probably wouldn’t have been necessary.

    SK,

Yes. It may have cost a little playing time for both Contreras and Schwarber, but I think for the most part it would have come at the expense of the playing time of Almora, Coghlan (still with the A’s), Szczur, La Stella and Montero.

Schwarber’s lefty bat is huge enough that Bryant, Baez, and Russell could have gotten a few more off days/defensive replacement/pinch-hitting days with tough righties starting. Because of positional flexibility of those guys, it would have also allowed every starter to get more rest when Soler, Fowler, and others went down.

    dmick89,

Crazy as it may seem, I think one of the reasons that Montero is still on the team (beyond his pitch-framing reputation and his seeming desire to impart wisdom on these younguns) is that he is a lefty—he hasn’t been completely excruciating facing righthanded pitching.

    Rizzo the Rat,

But if Schwarber didn’t go down, I would wager that DMick is right about Montero being gone already, and would add that Coghlan isn’t on the team, and La Stella never got sent down at the deadline.

    cerulean,

I agree Contreras hit so well there’s almost no way the Cubs could have kept him down longer. Maybe Contreras even gets more starts behind the plate initially.

Plus, the running game was about the only weakness and Contreras fixed that.

Weird call to let Hammel wear this one given the expanded rosters.

I wonder if Lester’s start was pushed back so that he wouldn’t have to face the stolen base-happy Brewers again.
