Cubs are Bleeding On and Off the Field

In News And Rumors by aisle424390 Comments

The injuries are piling up for the Cubs. In the outfield, our centerfielder and unlikely three hitter is down with a BROKEN FACE, the $136 million dollar man’s legs are all but useless at this point, and even our scrappy reclamation project veteran is down with a bad back, presumably from lugging around a giant bag of awesome all by himself.

In addition, 60% of the projected starting rotation has spent time on the DL, one of them appears done for the year, another has been shelled in every appearance he has made at both the minor and major-league levels since coming back, and the replacements have made the movie, “The Replacements” look good by comparison.  To put it another way, When Doug Davis is solidified as the #4 starter, you have some serious fucking problems.

Meanwhile, the infield does its best to keep things together, but with Aramis Ramirez set on Low Power and Geovany Soto doing his best Koyie Hill impression as he battles through injuries, there is only so much an occasional homerun from Carlos Pee-nya can do.  Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro remain the brightest spots and we can only assume that means that they will soon be killed by a falling piece of Wrigley Field.

But the hemorrhaging isn’t just contained on the playing field.

The Cubs are getting absolutely killed in revenue generation.  I don’t have access to their financials, but you don’t need them to know that the Rickettseses have to spend at least some of their time (when not in front of a TV camera) banging their heads on a desk or wall.

The Cubs drew 30,450 yesterday.  It was a holiday.  It was sunny and warm.  They were playing a “winnable game” against a division rival.  There were over 11,000 unsold seats anyway.  That is unfathomable and as Ed Sherman points out in his blog, it is a new reality at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are doing everything they can to try to move tickets in the new reality. Just before the first pitch, it was stunning to see the centerfield bleachers nearly empty. They did fill up a bit, but there still were pockets of open spaces throughout the bleachers. I can’t remember the last time I saw that sight, especially on a perfect day.

Indeed, there were only 30,450 people in the stands. That’s a big drop in revenue for the Ricketts family, considering the old reality would have seen a full house of 40,000 people on a holiday.

The Cubs are down 90,694 people in attendance through 28 games, a figure that is expected to rise if the Cubs don’t improve on the field.

That perhaps was the saddest part of Monday’s game. There was little energy in the stands. It felt more like a meaningless September game between two teams going nowhere. It seemed the fans already have given up on the Cubs, and it’s not even June 1. All you had to do was look at the mass exodus after the ritual singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the seventh inning.

The decline and fall of a supposedly a “recession proof” commodity like demand for Cubs tickets is staggering.  There is almost nothing the Ricketts have done “right” since they took over to stem the tide either.

Would handing the reigns over to Ryne Sandberg have made a difference if Hendry had been retained and the roster was composed as it is now? Probably not. Would a new general manager have been able to re-work the tangled mess of no-trade clauses, vesting options, and overwhelming contract terms to make this a contending team on the established budget? Probably not.  Would we be more accepting of this team if the bleacher seats cost only $50 instead of $60?  Probably not.

So are the Ricketts just the unwitting inheritors to a time bomb that was going to go off no matter what they did?  Maybe.

But it seems that the apathy has grown from the feeling that this is just business-as-usual around Wrigley Field.  The change in ownership from a greedy corporate giant, floundering in red ink in every aspect of their business not related to the Cubs to a family composed of unabashed Cubs fans yearning for a World Series title was supposed to be a good thing.  People wanted George Steinbrenner. They wanted Mark Cuban.  Hell, even a Jerry Reinsdorf would have been preferable to just hanging onto the Trib’s main man, Crane Kenney, running his same playbook as when he reported to the Trib.

I had thought that this would bring on resentment and anger in the fan base.  I assumed that I, and others like me here in the interwebs who spend too much time dwelling on this team, had simply arrived at a place of anger where everyone else would eventually arrive.  But they haven’t, at least not en masse.  It seems a lot of people have just stopped caring.

Nobody cares about Rodrigo Lopez or Doug Davis or the cannon fodder du jour out of the bullpen.  They barely care about the veterans that were actually counted on to turn around last year’s disappointing team.  That translates to not going into the wallet to buy tickets, and it would not surprise me to learn that it also means not bothering to turn on Pat & Keith or Len & Bob on the radio and TV.

This all means much less revenue than the Ricketts projected when they made the decision to keep Crane and his merry men, and that has trickled down to the decisions about spending more time trying to find additional revenue streams while simply attempting to tread water competitively in a weak division.

All of the decisions since haven’t amounted to much.  Quade sticking too long with a starter, batting Ramirez fourth come hell or high water, not playing Colvin much, leaving Brett Jackson in the minors, missed hit-and-runs, dollar hot dogs, discounted seats and all of the other nonsense going on down at Clark and Addison all stem from the one monumental decision by the Ricketts to not rock the boat when they took control of the team.

Now they are wounded and bleeding badly and I’m not quite sure where they can find a band-aid big enough to stop it.

I’m more or less with MB on DeWitt playing LF. But it’s mainly because I’ve managed to reconvince myself that Colvin blows. Guys like Snyder and Montanez have no future in MLB and have no business doing anything but coming off the bench or maybe working the short half of a platoon.

    From last thread:

I would put Colvin in center and DeWitt in left as the first option. If it came down to deciding between DeWitt or Colvin in left them I think they should give the bulk of the at bats to Colvin. At the start of the year, I thought DeWitt deserved to platoon with Barney at 2nd but with Barn’s hot start that’s not going to happen. Campy turned 25 yesterday, DeWitt and Barn are still 25 but everyone seems to act like DeWitt is so much older and the other guys are young kids. Seems strange to me.

I think he has more a shot at being a regular at some position than Colvin. Maybe with some other team.

I think they need to offer cheaper tickets and let fans sit where they want if the stadium is empty. But I recall someone (maybe one of you) said that it’d be hard to decrease ticket prices and then try to raise them again when the team stopped sucking. So I can see why they’d be reluctant to try that.

Mercurial Outfielder 2011-05-31 19:05 Does anyone think there’s a chance that HEndry will do to Quade what he did to Dusty in 2006 and take away all Quade’s “gamers,” so that Quade has to play the “kids.?”

No. Quade is Hendry’s puppet so I think he’ll do whatever Jimbo requests. If Hendry wanted Colvin starting every day in left then Quade would do it.
Colvin ought to get the starts. You have to see if last season was a fluke …The Cubs need to know if Colvin can cut it or not.
Everything in Colvin’s numbers point to last season being a fluke. Even if you follow the narrative that he was a new player last year after finally being healthy, he had a .316 OBP, swung at everything, and had a ridiculous 19.4% HR/FB. If that doesn’t scream fluke, I don’t know what does.

Why would he refuse a trade from this dead team if a team in a race was interested? I think he’d wave it for some sort of smaller buyout. Your point about nobody wanting him stands but I’m hoping he heats up in June and someone is desperate.

(dying laughing) I’ve been posting comments on the other thread.
If the rest of the team was manufacturing runs, I could live with DeWitt in left field. But they are basically a bunch of singles hitters, so I would see if either Colvin or Brad Fucking Snyder could accidentally go on a power surge in the short term.

If you are building a roster for the long haul and your choices are Montanez, Colvin, Snyder, Campana or DeWitt (I assume we are building this team in hell), then you probably go with DeWitt. But presumably, we will get a better outfielder back soon, the lineup is lacking power, and you have a couple of guys whose only value is in their power, so I’d plug one of them in.

Plus, it lends itself to the Ricketts’ meme that the farm system is full of good young talent.
I guess I don’t much care who the Cubs put out there in all honesty. None of these guys are part of the Cubs future in terms of an every day player. If Brett Jackson hadn’t missed a couple weeks with that injury he’d be in CF right now and Campana would be in LF. If/when Jackson gets hot I expect he’ll be called up and one of the guys on the roster will be sent down. If he sits the bench in favor of DeWitt I’ll care, but until that happens I don’t.

I would like to see Colvin play and have said as much throughout the offseason and early part of the season, but I also recognize he’s a 4th outfielder and potentially a very good one if he can hit for power coming off the bench.

Soto played almost every single day before his injury. I was even thinking he was playing too much. I’ll at least give Quade credit for playing Soto as frequently as he did. He batted him 8th, but at the same time Soto wasn’t hitting very well either.

Koyie Hill played in 5 games before May 10th. That’s all. He had 15 PA in April and only 3 starts.

But if he refuses the trade and stays here he doesn’t get the $14MM and he’s playing on a shitty team that won’t re-sign him. If he waves it for $1 or $2 MM and goes to another team and plays well with that team they might offer him a deal in the off season. Staying here on a terrible team that’s not going to re-sign him isn’t really beneficial to his value.
(dying laughing), Judd just said Z took BP with an aluminum bat the other day. That must have been fun to watch
Maybe that’s what Brenly was talking about the other day. He mentioned something about Z launching home runs to the scoreboard regularly in batting practice. I wasn’t paying much attention, but I bet that’s what he was talking about.

It also depends on what kind of aluminum. The new bats in college baseball are just like wood bats and power has declined significantly this season as a result. The speed off the bat maxes out the same as it does for wood bats. Obviously if Z was launching home runs that far he was using an older bat.

The ball that went over Castro was not a bloop it was a line drive. Marmol was hanging the slider and apparently his velocity was down too. I don’t necessarily think he’s injured but they touched him up. The hits down the line were fair but they weren’t softly hit.

After striking out in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 7-3 loss to the Astros. Carlos Zambrano tried to snap a bat in half by breaking it over his leg

Naturally, like almost everything else the Cubs have tried this season, Zambrano failed on his first attempt.

But he eventually managed to get the job done on his second try, walking off to a round of applause from the announced crowd of 31,178. With so little left to cheer about at Wrigley Field, Zambrano’s antics were the highlight of the night.

Who cares? Just every member of the Chicago media. Kaplan and Hollandsworth spent a good deal of time tsking over it in their “analysis.” I think it’s ridiculous which is why I pointed out the media, Levine and Sully, grilling Z about it in his postgame presser. BTW, a lot of the “Cubbie” faithful look for every chance to deride Z, last I checked. It should also be noted that Z had a 10 pitch, 1,2, 3, top of the 6th after his bat “episode.” I guess, I’m just as bad as Sully, Kap, Holly and Levine since I’m making a big deal about them making a big deal about it. It was just about the sole focus of the entire postgame coverage on Comcast.

I disagree with his assessment that Z is close to immovable. There is only one more year on his deal and he’s pitched well since the end of last season. If the Cubs pick up some of the money, I think they could get prospects from a team at the deadline. The two guys that weren’t on that list that should be if a real fire sale takes place are Geo and Marmol. I definitely think they should actively look to move Marmol and pretty sure they won’t consider it.

    EXACTLY. Thank you.
