Cubs 7, Mets 4

OSS: Jon Lester helps himself.

Three up:

  1. Jon Lester’s pitching line was just okay (6 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 SO), but he managed to get a two run single off of Syndergaard, picked off a Mets baserunner, and snagged a liner hit right up the middle to finish up his day.
  2. Anthony Rizzo continued his torrid hitting streak, hitting two doubles and a homer in this one.
  3. Jesse Chavez managed to shut the door, after most of the rest of the bullpen managed to prop it open.

Three down:

  1. The Cubs pen nearly blew it in the ninth. Hopefully Morrow is back to full strength soon.
  2. Javy TOOTBLAN’ed in the middle of a Cubs rally in the first inning.
  3. Bob Odenkirk is a great actor, not so much a great singer.

Next up: Cole Hamels takes on likely CYA winner Jacob deGrom at 7:05 PM CT.

    Notable minor league performances:

    Alex Lange – 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 7K, 3BB

Alex Lange has his offspeed stuff working in the 1st inning. Couple good curves and changeups to get the first two batters of the game looking. Here is a CH-CV combo on the 2nd K after setting the hitter up with a FB on the outside corner. pic.twitter.com/kmjhFtdTWH

If the Cubs play .500 ball the rest of the season, the Cardinals need to go 21-10 to win the division. 21-9 for the Brewers.

Another fun fact: the Cubs do not yet have a 32 game stretch in which they have played only .500 ball. Even with all the inconsistency, they haven’t won fewer than 17 games in a 32 game stretch. And the Brewers only have a single 30 game stretch in which they won more than 20 games.

    So I’m cautiously optimistic.

Given my impressive track record of being wrong yesterday, I predict that Cubs hitters will have no chance against Jacob deGrom and that Cole Hamels is due for a bad performance.

Today’s lineup has three consecutive lefties at the top, Victor Caratini batting fifth and Almora hitting against a righty.

    Rizzo the Rat,

I love that Joe has really blown up the whole leadoff hitter thing this year and is just putting good hitters up there, but this dadaist shit with the rest of the lineup cancels it out somewhat.

    dmick89,

I get resting Contreras. There are no off-days for a while, it’s a day game before a night game and deGrom is right-handed. I don’t get batting Caratini this high, though. And I’d much rather have Happ than Almora against a righty (but put Happ in right and slide Heyward to center).

This inning isn’t entirely his fault, but I found it a little annoying that Kintzler was the Cubs’ mid-season reliever acquisition this year.

    BVS,

Ball four was actually a perfectly-located strike, but called a ball because Caratini tried to throw out the runner instead of framing it.

They should just declare the Cubs the winner retroactively because the Mets’ run came as the result of umpire error. The Cubs are the only team with anything to play for at this point, anyway. What’s another loss to the Mets?

    dmick89,

The Cardinals end their season with 3 against Milwaukee and 3 against the Cubs. Hopefully the division is wrapped up at that point, but it should be a really interesting week regardless. I’d argue the Brewers have an outside shot if they win both remaining series against the Cubs, even with no sweeps.

    berselius,

Not soon enough. I can’t stand listening to Zaidman do play by play.

Cory Provus is still the gold standard for Pat understudies, but I think Zaidman is waaaay better than anyone they’ve had since.

    dmick89,

Really, though, I don’t care. I’m sure when last night’s game was suspended, Joe looked at it like 4 games in 3 days in 3 cities. At least one of those was going to be treated like a b squad game.

    BVS,

I though Grote was decent when he filled in last year. I think the biggest difference with Zach is that he seems to have great chemistry with Pat and Coomer. Certainly a far cry from the icy conversations between Santo and Judd.

    Ryno,

It will be interesting to see how Hoerner does at a level that advanced. If he holds his own, he could start next season at AA. He hasn’t had many plate appearances this year across three levels, but he walked quite a bit and barely struck out at all.

KB is scheduled to bat leadoff and play in left field in this afternoon's @iowacubs game.

    — Dylan Heuer (@dylan_heuer) August 30, 2018

This is purely just my observation: before the top of 3rd inning, Kris Bryant told his handler said something, and I saw the handler saying “you’re done?” while doing that hand to neck motion thing. KB then played LF top of 3rd, while the handler pulled out his phone.

    — Dylan Heuer (@dylan_heuer) August 30, 2018

Then the handler spoke with the manager of the Iowa Cubs. Then mid third, Bryant and the handler headed into the clubhouse.

Dunno what’s going on, but there was stuff happening.

Again, this is just what I saw. Don’t know everything.

    dmick89,

Yeah, he seemed as advertised with the bat. Better defense than expected, too. Why not challenge him and then decide if he goes to A+ or AA to start next year?
