OSS: Cubs turn it into a snoozer early

Three up:

  1. The Cubs scored five times in the first inning, forcing Jimmy Olsen to throw a Simon-esque number of pitches to get out of the inning. Even Heyward got a hit, on a disintegrating bat double.
  2. Jorge Soler capped off the inning with a laser beam to left that drove in three. Off the bat looked like it was going to go through the scoreboard, and Cubs facilities management is probably heaving a sigh of relief that it missed.
  3. Carl Edwards came in relief of a probably-threw-too-many-pitches Lester and threw a quiet inning and a third. It’s great to see him bounce back from his last outing, which was juuuuust a bit shaky, in the Harry Doyle sense.

Three down:

  1. Lester was not particularly efficient tonight, but still mostly kept the Brewers off the scoreboard. Somehow they’re a team that seems to have his number. In his last start they chased him early as well, IIRC after throwing 100 pitches in four innings.
  2. Lester hit for himself in the sixth with a five run lead, so Joe’s still being Joe.
  3. I have tickets to Saturday’s game in Denver and just found out that Mike Montgomery is starting the game. ?

Next up: The Cubs go for the sweep with Jake Arrieta on the mound. He faces Zach Davies at 1:20 PM CT.

To be fair to dmick89, Jimmy Nelson reminded me of that character from Superman whose name I couldn’t quite remember. So there was some confusion there.

    dmick89,

Because it would only be four days’ rest?

I think Joe was quoted as saying Cahill could come in after him in relief — but maybe he only wants Cahill to pitch an inning or two. Maybe he wants more out of Montgomery. (Not that this necessarily makes sense…)

    BVS,

Yeah, may as well I guess. I also got mixed up on my days. I thought Cahill pitched on Sunday for some reason. SK had to set me straight yet again. The old man keeps setting me straight. Not sure what that says about me.

dylan cease really needs to lower his K rate or he’s going to pitch his way right out of this organization. although, he walks a ton of guys too so his k/bb is still pretty shitty. maybe theo lets him slide?

I’m going to try an experiment: Szczur is so good. He’s probably the best player on the Cubs, and I’m so happy he’s leading off because he’s so exciting to watch and is the best fucking OF ever.

    Edwin,

Last time I expressed skepticism at Szczur’s leading off, he hit two home runs. So, I’ll double down on my skepticism. I hope he doesn’t prove me wrong! I’d feel such a fool!

I’m in the Chicagoland area at 9am and it looks like the apocalypse is scheduled for 10am.

Dammit. I missed it. I miss out on everything, even the apocalypse.

On the brightside, at least I no longer fear missing out—old hat and all that.

    dmick89,

My theory is that because there’s a Montgomery/Cahill piggyback, Montgomery is in due to the lefties in COL’s normal lineup so hopefully that allows him to go a bit farther in the front part of the piggyback before Cahill takes over.

If only they could let you choose the apocalypse on demand. You could be like “Apocalypse Now”.

Fucking hell, you have really thought this through.

Taking it one step further — the Rockies might see a LHP is starting and decide to rest a LHH or two, going with a right line-up against Monty. Then it would be like ha ha, our awesome righty is coming in in the third inning suckers! (This depends on the Rockies not realizing Montgomery isn’t an actual SP of course)

    Edwin,

What do I do if I want to downvote AND upvote a comment ?

Open up a different browser app on a different network. No one will know that you did both, though, so doing nothing accomplishes the same thing.

(I assume all of my comments are so hotly contested that the up and down votes are in equilibrium.)

Don’t worry; it was postponed. There will be a make-up apocalypse scheduled for a later date. #insertreligiousjokehere
