Cubs 5, Mets 2

OSS: Cubs bats wake up on the road, for once.

Three up:

  1. The Cubs bats actually came up with some big hits on the road, a rare occurrence these days. Javy Baez and Addison Russell both homered off of Marcus Stroman, who is a pretty dang good pitcher.
  2. The real MVP of this game, however, was Yu Darvish, who continued his second half tear by striking out seven in eight innings, allowing just a solo HR to future ROY Pete Alonso. He did walk his first batter in over a month though, so I guess that contract is back to being a bust.
  3. Even aside from the homers, the Cubs were hitting the ball all over the yard, as Baez, Caratini, Bryant, and Castellanos all hit doubles. The team strikeout total was right in line with their average from last weekend’s Nats series, but somehow the lazy narrative about putting the ball in play doesn’t come up when you win. Love to see six extra base hits in a game instead of relying on 70% of your ground balls finding holes.

Three down:

  1. Javy had two TOOTBLANs in this one. The team was a little too aggressive on the basepaths early on and were probably pressing a little bit, understandably.
  2. No Rizzo again today, and likely tomorrow as well.
  3. The useless Brewers lost to the Cardinals, and somehow managed to have a rain delay in their domed stadium. Good job, good effort fellas.

Next up: Cyle takes on Thor, at 6 PM CT.

    Rizzo the Rat,

Not a bad idea for Yu to become one of the best pitchers in baseball again. Not sure why the Cubs didn’t think of that until the last few weeks.

    BVS,

How absolutely hilarious is it that Kap called him too predictable after his last start? Say he gives up lots of homers, fine. He does. Saying you figured out why and that it’s too little variety in his pitches is pretty Kaplan.

    BVS,

One of the single most horrifying moments of my existence comes at the end of any Cubs game on NBC Sports Chicago when Kap and David De Jesus come on and I can’t find the remote.

    Cardinals lose.

Probably won’t matter with Thor and deGrom up, but at least the Cubs won’t lose any more ground today.

Heyward was doing well this year until he moved to the leadoff spot. Maybe that lineup position is just cursed.

Just our luck. The only pitch-out that anyone did in 2019 just happened against the Cubs (and it worked).
