OSS: Three outs away from a Cy Young?

Three up:

  1. Kyle Hendricks was just amazing today, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning before losing it on a HR by Jeremy Hazelbaker. Even aside from the no-hit bid he was also on pace for a Maddux for most of this game. He lowered his league leading ERA to 2.03, and it even dipped below 2 for portions of this game. Pulling off the no-hitter would have to have injected an actual shot at getting serious consideration for the award.
  2. Ben Zobrist hit his first home run in what feels like three months (it was actually more like three weeks) to get the Cubs scoring started. He later added a leadoff double in the ninth that the Cubs were unable to cash in for insurance, not that they really needed it tonight.
  3. Dex also had a big homer in this game, and was part of the Cubs rally in the third that scored their second run.

Three down:

  1. Everyone is sick of Joe West. Only he could find a way to make a pitcher losing a no-hitter in the ninth all about him. Kerry Wood took to twitter to grumble about West as well, hoping that he doesn’t umpire in the playoffs, and said that at least CB Bucknor is a great guy.
  2. I get the whole no-hitter jinx thing, but it would have been nice to see Matt Szczur replace Zobrist in LF in the late innings.
  3. The Cubs most negative play of the day, WPA-wise, was a Bryant strikeout with runners at the corners in the third. Sounds like Joe needs to move him down in the order smh.

Next up: Jason Hammel takes on Jaime Garcia and hopes to drop the Magic number down to Fukudome levels.

Joe West is a piece of excrement. I don’t know who’s worse….him or Angel Hernandez. Wasn’t it Angel Hernandez that threw Mongo out of the game when he was doing the 7th inning stretch for saying his strike zone sucked?

    JKV,

Yes. Thanks. Guess he has moved on?

he made an appearance about a month or two ago. (i seem to recall him being a huge vogelbach fan so maybe he just comments on yankees boards now?)

i always like his optimism, particularly because those were some pretty dark years for the cubs franchise.
