Cubs 4, A’s 0 (8.6.16)

OSS: Jake Arrieta great again?

Three up:

  1. Jake Arrieta shut out the A’s for eight innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking one. He’s still not the JAKE of late last year, but it’s good to see him putting away a lineup that he should be putting away. His fastball command still looks kind of shaky but I’ll take it if it still means a sub-3.00 FIP (dying laughing).
  2. Ben Zobrist was the WPA winner among the position players, driving in half the Cubs runs with a single in the third. He’s broken out of that slump quite nicely.
  3. The Cubs division lead is now back up to double digits!

Three down:

  1. The Cubs other two runs came off an infield single to third by Russell and a double by Soler that clanked off the A’s third baseman’s glove. Not the greatest day at the hot corner for the A’s
  2. Bryant and Heyward both had 0-fers at the plate, though at least they both drew a walk.
  3. The Cubs only play one more game against the A’s.

Next up: Kyle Hendricks faces defacto ace Sean Manaea and the Cubs look to bust out the brooms.

    Perkins:
According to 538, the Cubs are favored to win every game for the rest of the season. 121 wins sounds pretty nice. (dying laughing)

Still not enough to beat the Cubs best winning percentage permillage of .763.

SPOKEN, NOT SUNG, IN ‘MR. ROGERS’-STYLE VOICE:

    Go Cubs go.
    Go Cubs go.
Hey Chicago, what do YOU say,
the Cubs are going to win today.

    cerulean,

I’m not sure I entirely understand why they acquired Montgomery. No clue why they acquired Smith. They didn’t give up much for Smith, but I’d much rather have Vogelbach back at this point.

    dmick89,

It was a preemptively desperate move to prevent having to make a desperate move…

And then they rented Chapman for players earmarked for starting pitching depth…

And then Miller was actually available for not much more than Chapman…

And suddenly there were too many hard throwing relief pitchers that get strikeouts without Clayton…

So Joe Smith was signed to make all the others look reasonable.

The A-Rod era has ended, the final nail in the coffin of the steroid era.

Maybe Bonds will get a ride to Cooperstown in five years.

    EnricoPallazzo,

Allegedly he will receive his entire salary balance since this is a straight release. So he’s still on payroll, but now he’s being paid as a special adviser rather than a released player.

He doesn’t even have to come into the office. He can do this job from home.

    Rizzo the Rat:
    6-0!

I think, given the state of the standings, the exclamation point is unwarranted at this point. The Cardinals are closer to 4th place than they are to 1st.

Sigh. I hate it when runners take off on first move against a southpaw. If you don’t know he’s throwing home, don’t run!

    SK,

*cubs bus pulls up to a 7-11*

“hey chris, why don’t you run in and grab us some gatorades?”

*coghlan warily exits bus and enters 7-11*
*bus peels out of parking lot*

    dmick89:
They may as well go ahead and make this a 13 game winning streak.

If they do that, they’d be within a rounding error of a 105-win pace.

It is really great that Soler is showing that power. Fangraphs now has him at 100 wRC+ for the year despite that atrocious start.
