JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 4-30-13

In Commentary And Analysis, Minor Leagues by dmick8929 Comments

Round Rock Express 2 @ Iowa Cubs 7

Guillermo Monosco threw 5 innings, allowed 3 hits and a run on a walk, 6 strikeouts. The run he allowed was on a solo home run. Yoanner Negrin threw 2 innings, allowed 3 hits and a run. He struckout 3. Casey Coleman allowed a hit in an inning pitched and Rafael Dolis struckout 2 in an inning.

Logan Watkins took a walk in 4 plate appearances. He also struckout. Brett Jackson’s new swing struckout 3 times. Brent Lillibridge was 2-4 with a home run, his 2nd at Iowa. Brian Bogusevic just keeps hitting. He was 3-4 with 2 doubles and a triple. Brad Nelson was 2-2 with a home run and 2 walks.

That was Bogusevic’s 1st home run, which is kind of surprising when you consider the season he’s had at Iowa so far. In 24 games he’s hitting .420/.500/568. He has 7 doubles, a triple and that home run.

Palm Beach Cardinals 4 @ Daytona Cubs 11

Zach Cates threw 6 hitless innings last night. He pitched 6 innings, allowed 0 runs, walked 3 and struckout 7. On April 19th, Cates threw 0.2 innings, allowed 3 hits and 3 walks and 6 runs. Other than that awful outing, he’s pitched 22 innings, allowed 14 hits, 4 runs, 0 home runs, 8 walks and 22 strikeouts.

David Cales threw an inning, allowed 2 hits and a walk and struckout 1. Starling Peralta hadn’t appeared in a game since April 11th (only his 2nd start of the year) and came out of the bullpen last night. It didn’t go well. He allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in 1.2 innings. He gave up a home run and all 4 baserunners scored. Frank Del Valle finished the night and gave up a hit and a walk in 0.1 innings.

Tim Saunders was 1-3 with a walk, 2 strikeouts and an HBP. Zeke DeVoss batted 2nd last night for what I’m pretty sure was the first time. Guess what. He walked. He was also 2-3 with a double. Javier Baez was 1-5 with a double and 2 strikeouts. Guess what. Baez had an error. His 12th. He’s now on pace for roughly 67 errors this year.

Jorge Soler was 1-4 with a double. Ben Carhart was 2-4.

Kane County Cougars 13 @ Lake County Captains 9

Lendy Castillo makes me laugh. The Cubs picked this guy in the rule 5 draft last year. He was on the MLB team for part of the season. Usually with rule 5 picks, if they stick around, they’ll often get sent to AAA the following year. Maybe AA. Not Castillo. He didn’t even go to A+. He went to fucking A ball. Last night he sucked and in his 4 starts this year, only once has he allowed fewer than 5 runs. I’m guessing he’s sent to Boise when the short-season leagues begin. Maybe by that time they’ll send him to do DSL.

Justin Amlung threw 3 innings, allowed only one hit, a home run, walked 1 and struckout 2. Nathan Dorris threw 2innings, struckout 4 and allowed 2 hits.

RF Pin-Chieh Chen was 4-6 with a double. That improved his batting line to .242/.338/.303. Gioskar Amaya was 0-4 and it completed a terrible month for him. 24 strikeouts to 3 walks and a .560 OPS.

Dan Vogelbach was 4-6 with his 5th home run of the season. Vogelbach’s power didn’t come on right away, but it’s here. He’s hit 4 home runs in the last 10 games and has his slugging percentage up to .494.

Rock Shoulders was 2-5 and Willson Contreras was 2-4 with a walk and a home run. Yaniel Cabezas, a catcher, was 3-6. Cabezas is 24 years old.

Cut Lendy some slack, look at that murderer’s row of top prospects he faced, like Eric (.299 OBP) Haase, and Erik (21 year old, .256/.315/.351) Gonzalez

So I didn’t comment on the Rules Change link/discussion yesterday because I’m basically one of those traditional guys who thinks it is fine to play 15 innings if that’s what it takes. Sure, it’s long, but it isn’t cricket.

Then I saw this at the link:

How about once you reach a certain state (end of X innings, or end of inning game after game has been played for Y minutes) you have the away team propose a base out state (can’t be 0 outs, 0 runners on) and the home can choose to be the offense or defensive team for that half inning. If no runs score, the defensive team wins. If a run is scored the offensive team wins. It all gets taken care of quickly in half an inning.

I like Xeifrank’s idea. Since it’s basically a sudden death situation, you could let the manager reset his lineup with any players he chooses. He can put his best runner(s) on base and line up his best hitters in the most effective order.

Can you believe how much this would increase Tony Campana’s value? You could play for the tie and put Campana on. He’ll steal home. Maximizes Tony’s skill set 1000%. Who cares if can’t hit now. Heck even Sappelt might gain some value in this scenario.

    I’m totally for this idea.

    @ Berselius:
So, the new back entrance means they have to move the Harry Caray statue right? I hope they move it Iowa. That thing is scary. I’m sure it would give my kid nightmares.

Not clear to me how the clubhouse expands, though that is noted in the plans. I guess most of that is underground?

    And 45% longer troughs. Yay.

Looks nice though. I like it.

    @ SVB:

I think it’s more like the team is not going to be happy with the placement of that Jumbotron for Glenallen Hill type HRs (dying laughing). I wonder how much it costs to fix them.

Glad to hear that someone agrees with me on this. Love the choice to have a statue to Harry, but the statue itself is fucking hideous.

No more than having Brent Lillibridge, Cody Ransom or any other random Cub currently on the roster I’ve already forgotten existed. At least Campana can do something well. If the speedy guys replaced those types of players, I’m all for it. At least it’s fun watching guys run the bases. There’s no fun in watching Lillibridge do anything.

I like rule change ideas for a few reasons. They’re fun to think about. What each rule would have an impact on is interesting to discuss. It’s never going to happen so you can throw some wild-ass ideas out there. Baseball won’t change. They’ll die a slow and painful death before they change and eventually that’s what will happen. Baseball can’t even get people to watch playoff games. More people would watch the college spring football games than they would a World Series between the Rays and Marlins.

The DH should have been in the NL 35 years ago and they still don’t have it. Why? Because a few fans would not be happy. They could make each and every game a little more exciting to watch by adding the DH, but nope. Fuck that. Tradition.

    @ Rice Cube:
Why don’t the Cubs just set up an “independent buyer” to buy out the rooftop owners? They could buy all the buildings facing the stadium on Sheffield and Waveland and be done with it. Then they could build whatever they want, put in parking, etc. etc. A couple more years of 90-loss teams will drive down the value of the rooftops anyway.

    @ SVB:
When Ryno and I first became fake friends after the 2003 season, he used the name Tyrone and would often do that to piss me off. It got to the point where I could read that shit as quickly as I could read anything else. Still annoyed me, which is why he did it.

    @ dmick89:
I think he would have risked alienating some fans, and I don’t think playing the “We’ll just pack up our stuff and leave” card would have been a great way to start negotiations. I’m fine with them moving, but I also think that they can make it work at Wrigley, and apparently, so does Ricketts.
