Amazingly, Castro now has the best fielding % of his career.

      Steve Strasburg is now: .389/.421/.722
His pitching hasn’t been bad, either.

I already have the video picked out for tomorrow’s recap when they lose their 12th game in a row.

      @ josh:
Their DER is second in the league. They were in last place in 2011.

Is DER a measure of how stupid they play?

I catch myself saying “These Go To 11″ in virtually any setting. What a great movie.

      @ josh:
Defensive Efficiency Rating is a defensive metric that measures outs made per ball in play. Like inverse BABIP.

      @ ACT:
Castro’s been doing what he can. He’s just no Sammy Sosa. That’s no knock on him. It doesn’t help that LaHair’s flash has apparently fizzled.

He was seemingly making an error every game earlier. It’s been a while since his last one, though.

Oh okay. Yeah, that’s been the only thing that doesn’t seem quite so rage inducing. I don’t know if Sveum is pushing the 3B coach to be aggressive, but he has made just some godawful sends, it seems like. Surprisingly, Fangraphs likes their baserunning. Maybe FG isn’t counting horrible sends?

I actually think this clip fits the Cubs better:

      @ josh:
MGL designed the base running metric and described it here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/ultimate-base-running-primer/
Also, MGL’s responses in the comments section are good for some bonus comedy.
      e.g.,

Well, if you have some way of telling me what base an OF throws the ball to (I don’t), I’ll be glad to incorporate that into the metric. Why don’t you email me or post it on FG every time that happens and then compile it at the end of the year and send me the data? While you’re at it, maybe you can do my taxes for me.

      What a moronic comment…

I take it you don’t think highly of the baserunning metric. They have been taking extra bases from 1st to 2nd more this year, it seems like, but they’ve been thrown out a number of times on plays at the plate that weren’t close, especially in close games where they really needed the runs. I’m not as horrified by their baserunning as I was during Spring. I was hoping Spring they were just trying some things out. I’m not sure what to make of this team. They just can’t score and their bullpen sucks. That’s about all you can say, I guess. Hopefully they go on a winning streak soon to balance things out.

I don’t see where you got that from. I honestly don’t know enough about it to evaluate it.

I guess that sort of works, as one team was composed of major leaguers and the other was full of amateurs.

On May 13, 2012, MB wrote this: Even Bad Teams Get Hot . The Cubs had beaten a few good teams, Marmol went to the DL, and we were riding high. Yeah, sure, we all knew what MB was saying. Somewhere deep in the recesses of our psyche’s of Cubfandom, tucked behind a plumbing access panel, a shred of logic knew MB was right. But it wasn’t going to see the light of day anytime soon.

So on May 14, 2012, the Cubs beat the Cardinals 6-4 to clinch a series tie. The Cubs haven’t won since. Damn you, MB, for being right.

But if you look a little deeper into the situation, MB wasn’t right at all. MB jinxed the Cubs. It’s as clear as day! (Not a hazy, smoggy Chicago day, but a bright, warm, tropical island day!) Surely, the Cubs would have won at least 4-5 games in the last 2 weeks without MB taunting fate.

Retract MB. Apologize. Pay your penance and release us from suffering the misery of the jinx you’ve put upon us.

I like how he put Kerry’s career in perspective with other draft picks. People forget that even high draft picks usually don’t become superstars. The Cubs did just fine in picking him (though I’d rather they picked Roy. Hindsight is 20-20.)
