I look at this like I do the 2003 Cubs and Mark Prior. Some say they shouldn’t have worked him so hard, but I disagree. It’s not that I think they should have worked him as hard as they did, it’s that teams are going to work these pitchers, young and old, hard when they’re fighting for a playoff spot. What would we as fans think if the cubs shut Prior down and they missed the playoffs that year? Odds are overwhelming his career would still have ended when it did anyway.

There’s a difference between Strasburg and Prior. Strasburg is coming off surgery.

One could argue that there is a faction of stats-savvy fans who would fap to FIP, though.

i like that the nats GM is sticking to his guns. If he keeps doing his job right that team is going to make the playoffs more than once. I would love the move if I was convinced that limiting innings like this really prevents injury.

Looks like he’ll get to that limit in another 5-6 starts based on him pitching fewer than 6 innings per start so far this year. That will probably take him up close to the end of the season. The interesting thing is whether they let him pitch in the postseason. Can’t imagine they’ll not let him do that.

So maybe they’ve been smarter about this than we’re giving them credit for?

Yeah, they have been. He’s had several starts where he’s had an extra day off as Tangotiger pointed out.

Since most rotations are of the “5 games” variety, that means that off days occasionally makes a pitcher start every six days. Indeed, 12 of his 24 starts (after Opening Day) had him rest the extra day.

And on some occasions, even two extra days. That is, three times he pitched on a weekly basis.

He’s probably on the books for another 8 starts if he wasn’t being shut down, but will instead make 5 to 6. Plus the postseason. There is no way they shut him down for good, right? I mean no way as in no fucking way a team in the playoffs would shut their best pitcher down.

I kept hearing 180 as the innings limit for Strasburg but I don’t think they’ve ever officially announced a defined limit so they could theoretically pitch him in the postseason without appearing to go back on their word.

Rizzo should lose his job then. That’s just fucking stupid. That is arguably the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard since I became a fan of any sport.

From what I just found on Google Rizzo has said nothing about the innings limit and one source said it’s not a magical number, which echoes what Rizzo said earlier in the season. Another source said he’d miss 2 to 3 starts. Who knows, but if you don’t play your best pitcher in the playoffs that’s an offense that demands immediate firing.
