I think he’s on to something here. Maybe he’s right! Maybe we’ll be great! Hey…wait a minute…Damn you Hope Monster! You had me again! (angrily shakes fist in air)
Bill Curtis is being interviewed on the Cubs radio broadcast right now. I’m not listening to it, but I imagine it’s going something like this:
Keith Moreland: “Bill, great to have you, you’re a real legend. What are you working on these days?”
Bill Curtis: “Thanks, Keith. I, Bill Curtis, have been examining…the dark…underbelly…of the Chinese mafia in Chicago where I…Bill Curtis…am from…and…where I…Bill Curtis…have lived…and the Cubs…play and where I…Bill Curtis..am watching…”
Keith: “…uh, Sorry Bill, that’s the inning. Great to see you.”
@ josh:
That’s probably true. Strikeouts can look really ugly and he’s going to strikeout a lot. He has talent. It will be interesting to see how he develops.
@ Suburban kid:
They’ve won every time I’ve seen them live. If someone would only buy me a season ticket and help me get a job and residence nearby (with flexible hours), the Cubs wouldn’t lose a home game all year.
that one girl at BCB had seen the Cubs like 1000 times at home and they had something like a .986 winning percentage when she was there. (dying laughing)
@ mb21:
We’ll have to chip in for a Rizzo-the-Rat Winnebago then. And a passport in case they have to play interleague games in Toronto or exhibition games in Japan. This is getting expensive.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
I don’t think Randy Johnson had really learned how to pitch yet when he was with the Mars. He was just relying on pure, terrifying, heat and ugliness.
@ Suburban kid:
Glad the OV CON was such a success. We’ll have to do it again next year.
Although the Toyota sign and minitron ruined the glory of Wrigley for me, the bathrooms were superb and the concrete netting has also been upgraded.
The OV-CON was well attended. My mom was even there. So were six Dutch guys who, when asked by the beer vendor whether they wanted Bud or Bud Light, responded by asking which was stronger.
Speaking of beer, I am now trying Shiner Bock solely because I read about it here.
(dying laughing) probably won’t suck at everything, but most things. Nicely done, Josh.

Therefore, Hayden Simpson > Chris Volstad.
@ mb21:
I’m thinking that’s going to be the story with him: great one day, horrible the next.
@ Rice Cube:
Sitting a ball on a tee for the batter to hit > Chris Volstad

That inning was vintage Cub.
@ Rice Cube:
Wouldn’t surprise me.

Thanks. I always mix those two up.
We do have to give the Cubs front office credit. As far as we know they have not taken away dinner privileges from any player. Progress.
They should bat around since Starlin is a triple shy of the cycle.

I wonder if Volstad’s first win is still in his sight.
WIDE strike zone.
Top outside corner for called strike three.
Brett Jackson doing Brett Jackson things. Two XBH and two Ks.
@ Rice Cube:
Been wide all day. Vitters rung up in the first on a pitch that was out of the zone.
@ Aisle424:
wait, is that a reference to the new batman movie? does batman die at the end?
@ Aisle424:
My exact feeling watching the movie (also, how they both disappeared for a few years and came back at roughly the same time.)
(Also, note that I don’t consider it a serious flaw, either. Superhero movies always require some suspension of disbelief.)
Wow, DeJesus doubled his homer total today.
Cubs don’t lose.
Soriano, Marmol ——–> clear waivers
Shocking, I know
@ Suburban kid:
You went to the game today, right?
Watching Felix’s attempt at a no-hitter (it’s the free game on mlb.tv).
@ Rizzo the Rat:
No longer a perfecto? Len seemed to think it was.
@ WenningtonsGorillaCock:
Thanks for the tip. I just posted an aside about this: http://www.obstructedview.net/aside/alfonso-soriano-and-carlos-marmol-clear-waivers.html
Aw an error!? That sucks.
Wait, I read the box wrong, the Rays have the error, not the Mariners. So it’s still a perfecto.
@ josh:
Oh, nice.
Also, i never would have expected Farnsworth to last as long as he has in the majors.
Perfect game!
If there ever was a Mariner that would do it, it’s Felix Hernandez.
@ josh:
Or Randy Johnson.
that’s the 3rd no-hitter the Mariners have been involved with this year, isn’t it?
The Rays have been perfecto’d three times since 2009

BEWB CUPCAKES
Attorney I work with just e-mailed me to let me know about the perfect game. YOU’RE NOT BILLING ME FOR THAT, ASSHOLE.
(dying laughing)
As soon as I say BJacks is looking overmatched, he looks like an old pro. (dying laughing)
@ Mercurial Outfielder:
He did strike out twice, as is his wont.
BJax’s K’s per game:

2

His BABIP is over .400, but his BA is under .200.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
Sliders are death to him. It’s like he can’t even recognize them.

I’m sure nobody else has noticed that yet.

We can be certain Oneri Fleita didn’t
@ mb21:
Yes.
Cubs are playing at a 1.000 clip when I see them during this decade. They are only .600 for the century.
@ Suburban kid:
Glad the OV CON was such a success. We’ll have to do it again next year.

Maybe Cubs fans from all over should start a fund to get me to as many Cubs games as possible (no refunds if it doesn’t work).
@ Rizzo the Rat:
They’d find a way to go 81-81.
that one girl at BCB had seen the Cubs like 1000 times at home and they had something like a .986 winning percentage when she was there. (dying laughing)
@ mb21:
A HUGE improvement for them.

In other news, Harper went 0-5 and is now .245/.321/.396. He still has a long way to go (and a lot of time, of course).
@ Rice Cube:
I’ll chip in a little bit myself, if that helps.
Aaron Cook: 1 K in 5.1 IP, improving his strikeout rate for the season. Unsurprisingly, the guy he struck out is Mark Reynolds.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
The tickets might end up costing more than the Winnebago.
@ Mobile Rice:
Look, do you want the Cubs to win or not? No one ever said building a championship team is cheap.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
I don’t think Randy Johnson had really learned how to pitch yet when he was with the Mars. He was just relying on pure, terrifying, heat and ugliness.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
There’s a Cuban pitcher in the low minors who completely agrees with you.
@ SVB:
He had things pretty well figured out by 1994. His 1995 and 1997 seasons were 2 of his best.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
(dying laughing)
@ Rizzo the Rat:
You were right. I totally forgot RJ pitched for the Ms.
I always thought Randy Johnson had a 20K game, but there were only two other people with 20K games besides Wood, and they were both Roger Clemens.
@ josh:
He had 20 K’s in 9 innings, but the game went into extras. http://miscbaseball.wordpress.com/2010/05/26/randy-johnsons-20-strikeout-game-in-2001/
One interesting (probably coincidental) feature of all 4 20-K games is that in none of them did the pitcher allow a base on balls.
@ Rizzo the Rat:
What would happen if Cook faced B-Jax?
@ GBTS:
There’s a Wikipedia article on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irresistible_force_paradox
@ Rizzo the Rat:
Well, yeah, but you should buy the Winnebago.
