Can you imagine Ron Santo giving a HoF speech today after the inning St.Louis had last night. I bet his toupee would have been on fire just from the steam!

The league’s response is equally notable for the part of the Chronicle scoop that it didn’t refute, the one that claimed Big Ten presidents are currently debating whether to allow Penn State to remain in the conference at all in the wake of the devastating Jerry Sandusky sex scandal. PSU is already facing crippling judgments from the NCAA and the Department of Education for its negligent response to allegations Sandusky was abusing children in the Nittany Lion locker room, including the possibility that the football program will be shut down under the “death penalty.” Current language in the 2011-12 Big Ten handbook requires any member that fails to show complete and accurate information during an investigation to “show cause why its membership in the conference should not be suspended or terminated.” At the final stage, expulsion would require a vote of at least 70 percent, or eight of twelve member schools.

So if we assume for a moment that the Big Ten kicks out Penn State, then who becomes their 12th member?

    Notre Dame?
Steal PItt or Syracuse from ACC?
    Or someone else?

And since it seems like PSU might still be able to field a low-level football team w/o scholarships, etc. where do they go? Independent b/c no conference wants them? Big East (=no conference) MAC–they rehabbed Marshall…..

    @ GBTS:

I worked long and hard on this protest, and I was really happy with the way things came out in the end. It was a lengthy process but I’m glad the judge was able to see the rigidity and width of my case.

    @ SVB:
I doubt they would add a 12th team right away. They’d probably just go back to 11.

I”m really hoping the B10 takes a vote on this one. Sure sounds like Sally Mason at Iowa would have no problem voting to kick them out. Good for her. As far as I know she’s the first one to mention the B10 punishing PSU further.

I don’t think any conference would touch PSU. Assuming the NCAA hits them by banning them from television for several years (and bowl games), loss of 20 or 30 scholarships and possibly having revenue from football given to charity or the victims, nobody is going to touch them.

The advantage of having PSU in a conference is the money they’d generate, but that’s not going to happen for awhile. No TV, no bowl, money will be taken from the football program, not enough scholarships, etc. They may not get the death penalty, but I think they’ll essentially get the same thing and if the B10 boots them, it’s the same as a death penalty.

I’ll be in Chicago next month and plan to go to a Cubs game on August 15th. Seeing as it is a Wednesday day game against the Astros, what would be the best way to get tickets to avoid paying lots of money. Stubhub now? Stubhub the day before the game? Scalpers on the street? I suppose I’ll be looking at grandstand seats — I’ll probably need to buy at least four tickets.

Also: I realize the fact that I barely post here anymore makes this even creepier, but if any of the Chicago-based OV regulars would like to get together for a brief OV-CON I would gladly buy you a beer and talk Cubs with you.

Wow they took away all wins since 1998, no postseason for 4 years, $60M fine, and took away 10 scholarships.

If you’re a student athlete (or any student really) I couldn’t even imagine attending the college if I had any alternate choice.

    @ Suburban kid:

Stubhub. Most games have been cheaper than face on there, and against the Astros, they definitely will be. I’m not sure if it’s best to get them now or closer to the game. My gut says wait for people to get desperate to sell. I could be up for a mini-OV CON. Let me know where/when.

BTW, I can’t unsee this, so I’m going to share my horror. Courtesy of one of my FB friends:

You know that really uncomfortable moment when you’re looking forward to the Olympics and you realize that the logo looks like Lisa Simpson going down on Bart Simpson? That.

    @ Aisle424:
Yeah, Stubhub is cheaper than face value and I probably won’t rely on scalpers since we’ll need several seats together. I’ll keep a watch on it.

If you’re at the game that day we can have the OV CON in the men’s room under the bleachers, if not, I’ll be around all that week.
