I had an opportunity to join Gary McDonald on his Mets Musings podcast earlier today to talk a bit about the Cubs as we get ready to see Matt Harvey and the Mets this weekend at Wrigley Field.

My part starts at about the 20 minute mark, but before that Gary talks about Ike Davis' struggles and some of the other problems the Mets have been having lately, so maybe the Cubs have a shot to win a third series in a row!

OK, we won't get crazy. Enjoy.

If you couldn't tell, I'm back at work for the first time since Leah was born… so I have more spare time. Earlier in the season, I discovered that the Cubs barely had anyone on the Top 50 list for RE24 this season. That trend has continued. The only member on the list this year so far is David DeJesus.

47th David DeJesus, 5.91

65th Anthony Rizzo, 3.38

79th Nate Schierholtz, 2.40

It's really possible to only have 1 player in the Top 150 at the end of the season (if DeJesus and Schierholtz are traded). That's insane.

153rd Starlin Castro, -3.92

That's our 4th best player (that qualifies).

Here's a great article by frequent OV commenter Rice Cubs on his blog: Total Market Freedom.

If you’re a good software engineer or a good web designer, you get to work for Microsoft or Facebook or Twitter or Google or whatever. You have a choice. Maybe you decide to work for a company close by in Chicago. Maybe you decide Chicago sucks (blasphemy!) and you’d rather take a chance in Seattle or Birmingham, Alabama. You have a choice. But the athlete doesn’t have a choice in North American pro leagues, and similarly in Japan.

Americans take great pride in the freedoms they want for themsevles, but when it comes to others, they couldn't care less. If every profession hired its employees the way that professional sports leagues do, it would be viewed as a great injustice. Since it doesn't affect most people, they don't care.

Carson Cistulli has posted a short interview with new Cubs color commentator Jim Deshaies over at Fangraphs. In it, he talks about his transition to Chicago after 16 years in Houston and having to adapt to an audience that is unfamiliar with his style. He also talks about his philosophy in presenting analytics to a wide array of fans.

…I think the way the game has changed because front offices are using it- and it's very important, it's how they acquire players, who they sign, who they promote- it's our responsibility as broadcasters to kind of play along. I mean, you don't want to bury your head in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist…

I really enjoy Deshaies, and the interview is worth a listen. The only portion of the interview I take issue with is when he says that he's very similar in style to Bob Brenly.

Robinson never bothered to hide his antipathy toward the game he had done so much to change. He participated in very few of its ceremonial events over the years and refused to go to old timers games so often that teams stopped inviting him.
One notable exception occurred on June 4, 1972, when Robinson agreed to come to Dodger Stadium to have his number retired. He had resisted the idea for many years but finally Don Newcombe, his old friend and teammate who worked in the Dodgers’ community relations department, convinced him.
