I’m not sure why it made me laugh, but I saw on cubs.com today that Kerry Wood was working on stuff to regain his form.
CHICAGO — Kerry Wood has been a little inconsistent, but Cubs manager Mike Quade said the right-hander is healthy and just needs time.
“He’s obviously capable of dominating and pitching a lot more efficiently than he has,” Quade said of Wood, who has given up six runs on six hits and seven walks over 6 1/3 innings in eight games since returning from the disabled list. “There’s a couple things about coming back from down time, and part of it is how soon will you be back to who you are. Sometimes it’s right away and sometimes it takes a little bit.
“With his experience and the fact he’s done it before, I don’t worry so much about the veterans as I do the kids,” he said. “You believe he’ll be fine and the more he pitches, the better he’ll be.”
Didn’t this just happen with Carlos Marmol? Yes, it did.
This month, Marmol has a 16.63 ERA, giving up eight runs over 4 1/3 innings. In June, he had a 0.60 ERA, serving up one earned run over 15 innings in 13 games.
“He needs to get himself consistent, work-wise and understand what he needs to do, like he has for years,” Quade said. “Everybody goes through tough times and adjustments and this is one of his. We don’t want to lose sight of the fact that this guy has been good for a long time. It’s not like he’s been falling apart.”
So I started thinking about all the other Cubs players who should be given time off to work on stuff. Carlos Zambrano needs to work on stuff. So does Alfonso Soriano and every starting pitcher not named Matt Garza or Ryan Dempster. Alfonso Soriano has a lot of things he needs to work on. Tony Campana needs to practice all aspects of baseball except baserunning.
The reality is that this team is bad and they have a lot of bad ballplayers who need to work on shit. I don’t have a problem with Quade doing what he’s doing, but it’s just something that makes me laugh.

I think the “team” option is actually a mutual option where Aramis could void his half of it and thus forfeit the $2MM buyout. That’s what Cots says, but since Levine reported otherwise and nobody knows what the fuck is going on, I could be totally wrong.

I think you do it with rookies and cost-controlled players then just to show that it can work. Then you don’t have to overpay for aces, just have multiple long-relievers.
The problem of course is that you have to pitch into the fifth inning to qualify for wins.

That said, it would require young players who aren’t selfish (since they will have fewer wins/losses and thus less bragging rights) and a team with a strong vision to stay the course.

I would argue that the teams with lots of money (Yankees, Red Sox) caught on and some of the smaller market teams (Rays, Toronto) caught on too, but for the most part it seems that baseball is slow to catch up. One day Billy Beane will figure out a new Moneyball to play though; everyone’s pretty much figured out the OBP thing except for Jim Hendry.

Just because Wells doesn’t have more Ks than IP doesn’t make him bad, does it?
He’s given up 1 homer in 32.1 IP and has a 2.41:1 ground out to air out ratio. I’m actually impressed by his outings, but I have a bit of a personal bias for groundball machine pitchers.
Of course, on this Chicago Cubs team, he’d turn those grounders into a .480 BABIP.

Wells was considered a tough sign when he was drafted and a guy with a lot of potential.
The Cubs gave him 2nd/3rd round money to sign ($530,000). 3rd highest signing bonus the Cubs gave out in last year’s draft behind Simpson and Golden.

if Milton Bradley had done what Theriot did, he’d be done for at least 10 games and probably more. Not that Theriot has the same history, but he got pretty violent with at least one umpire during that exchange and there was contact with two. you can’t do that.
I know the 2nd umpire got in between Theriot and the first umpire, so he kind of precipitated the contact, but still. I thought he was gone for at least 5 games.
